We strive to strengthen partnerships and alliance with salons, business, and high schools in the Massachusetts area. Kristi Mastroianni - 2 -

Program Description Cosmetology at C.H. McCann Technical School is a Chapter 74 approved post secondary program. Whereupon successful completion, graduates are prepared for entry level positions and are eligible for licensure by the Massachusetts Board of Cosmetology. The sequence of courses involves Cosmetology Science, Cosmetology I-IV, Esthetics I and II, Salon Management, and Computer Applications. Learning opportunities and job shadowing programs are provided by local salons, and advisory board members. Program Syllabus The post secondary Cosmetology program is a two- semester course and is designed to introduce the student to the science, art and business aspects of the profession. The curriculum provides instruction in manicuring, pedicuring, shampooing, permanent waving, esthetics, facial make-up, hair and scalp treatments, hair cutting, hair styling, hair coloring, chemical relaxing, and barbering techniques. Salon Management and Computer Application courses are required for graduation. The clock-hour education is achieved through a sequential set of learning steps that address specific tasks necessary for the completion of one thousand hours, graduation, and licensure exams. The Theory of Cosmetology is evaluated after each course of study by written exams. Practical and oral assignments are evaluated in accordance with text book procedures and the VTE Massachusetts curriculum Frameworks. All students are required to master the National Industrial Skills Standards for entry-level cosmetologists and the VTE Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Our Fall semester courses include: professional ethics, the history of cosmetology, sanitation, and sterilization, anatomy, and physiology, bacteriology, and esthetics. Also, hair shaping, hair styling, hair and scalp treatments, manicuring, pedicuring, and facial make-up. Spring semester courses are a continuation of the above with the addition of hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, advanced hair cutting and shaping techniques, and the application of artificial nail technology. The curriculum is integrated by hands on experiences with live models, mannequins, and the public. This program is dedicated to preparing students for current and emerging careers in the professions of natural hair styling, esthetics, nail specialty, and cosmetology. It combines, technical skills, interpersonal skills, and entrepreneurship. The program adheres to all ethical and professional standards of the cosmetology industry. Students participate under supervision in the actual operation of a full service salon catering to real customers, in order to gain management skills and customer service experience. Kristi Mastroianni - 3 -

PERFORMACE STANDARDS The clock hour education is provided through a sequential set of learning steps that address specific tasks necessary for state board preparation, graduation, licensure, and entry level job skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative, and productive career-oriented activities. The course is presented through comprehensive lesson plans that reflect effective educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Audiovisuals aids, guest speakers, projects, and other related learning methods are incorporated. Students are required to perform all tasks within a pre-determined time period. The clock hour education allows the students to practice each salon service until it has reached the range of satisfactory presentation. Written and verbal progress reports are given to students upon completions of each task. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVIES After the student has reached the clock hour requirements and has successfully completed all task analysis the students are able to perform all salon services to the public in an educationally controlled environment.
