Introduction Radio Frequency is one of the most exciting treatments in aesthetics, non invasive and yet incredibly effective for all skin colours. In our early 20 s collagen is abundant in our skin, however as we age the production of collagen slows down by as much as 1.5% per year. By the time the 40 s are reached the level can be reduced by as much as 30%, this is noted in a loss of tone, fine lines and dryness. Using the Radio Frequency waves produced by Zeolight can stimulate collagen regeneration, tighten elastin fibres and rejuvenate the skin. How does it work? Gel is applied to the skin and Radio frequency waves are directed onto the skin to the dermis where it creates heat energy. As the waves create energy in the dermis the superficial epidermis is protected. The heat energy to the dermis heats up water molecules, which vibrate and rub together causing additional frictional heat. When the temperature reaches 68-72 degrees it will cause collagen fibres in the dermal layer to contract and stimulate collagen reconstruction. Neurotransmitters from the brain sense that the generation of heat is a potential threat and the body responds by further stimulating collagen and tightening elastin fibres. This is a natural response by the body which is putting it s defense mechanism in place. However the benefits of this defence mechanism is tighter, firmer and more youthful skin. The skin also has a general freshness about it as the water molecules are excited and produce increased levels of oxygen, stimulating below the skin surface, helping to reduce scarring and stretch marks What should I expect? 1.Immediate result: when the temperature of hypoderm reaches 68 C-72 C, the collagen will immediately shrink, you will see a quick initial tightening of the skin. This tightening is usually evident at the first treatment. Fine lines and wrinkles will smoothen and soften after one treatment. 2.A course of treatments will give a more long term effect: To stimulate the recombination and re-growth of collagen. Ideally 6 8 sessions should be taken at 10-14 days apart. Once the course has finished the skin will keep regenerating for up to 6 months when a maintenance program can be put in place. The perfect treatment to create a younger and more hdyrated skin. 3. The results will be dependent upon the clients original skin condition bearing in mind skin laxity and tone. The results achieved are natural in appearance with the treatment 2
providing cellular stimulation rather than muscle tightening. A general glow and more vibrant skin is achieved. 4.Maintenance treatment. After a course of treatments the results will continue to improve for up to 6 months. The client can have maintenance treatments with 2 3 sessions every 6 months. How does the treatment feel for the client? This is a heat-based treatment and the client should experience a general warmth within the skin. The applicator must be moved continually to avoid creating hot spots. Who can have treatment? Radio frequency is non invasive and unlike some laser and ipl treatments it can be used to treat all skin types and is popular with both male and females over the age of 30. The treatment is excellent for stimulating collagen within the skin and to strengthen the elastin fibres. What should you advise the client do in after and in between treatments? The skin may appear flushed post treatment, this will generally subside within 1 2 hours. A general tautness may be experienced and skin may be slightly drier initially. Make up can be applied immediately also advise the use of a good sun screen. The client should drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated, it is helpful to take a collagen supplement during treatment. Getting started Probes and RF handle (choose one probe and fit it in the handle) 10cm 20cm 40cm 10mm/20mm for the face and 40mm for body treatment. 1 2 3 1. Choose the correct size RF probe for the area being treated, insert it to RF handle 2. Unscrew the silver retaining ring and screw attachment head in a clockwise direction, tighten it and make sure it's set well. Do not make it skew and re attach the silver retaining ring. 4
Operation Steps 1. Clean the treatment area and spread the cooling gel evenly on the treatment area, 3-5mm is the best. 2. Testing: choose face or inner arm skin for testing. Place the treatment probe on to the treatment area, once on the skin press the button and assess the clients response. Check the sensitivity of the client regularly, and observe the skin's reaction to the treatment. It is typical for the epidermis to feel slightly chilled with the gel and to experience a more intense heat in the dermis due to the sensation of the radio frequency waves. If there is no sensation, you should increase the energy, and vice versa by reducing the intensity if your client finds the treatment too hot. Ensure that you release the treatment button before taking the applicator off the skin. Operation tips 1.The probes must be on the skin during treatment, do not leave an aperture. 2.For operation, the applicator must remain in contact with the skin, after treatment release the treatment switch firstly, then take away the treatment handle, failure to do so could cause a skin burn. 3.Whilst operating, make your movements smooth. 5
WARNING: never leave the head in a stationary position on skin keep the head moving in the selected motion. 4. The client will experience a greater intensity when operating on sensitive areas, such as the mouth, nasolabial fold, forehead. This is normal, due to the penetration of radio frequency, if it is too uncomfortable, reduce the settings. 5. You should be cautious when treating the neck as there are a lot of lymph nodes and nerves, it is advisable to lay the client flat and move remove the neck pillow. 6. Use an action that works to smooth wrinkles and lift loose skin. 7. To complete treatment, use a hydration mask after treatment and advise the client on home care for skin. Operation Steps Face Step 1: Firm 1. Start at the chin and sweep out to the ear lobe. 2. Work from the corners of the mouth to the middle of the ears and back. 3. Sweep from the nose to the middle ear. 4. Work from the nose to the temple. 5. For sensitive skin start at a low energy and increase accordingly 6
Step 2: Lifting 1. Start at the jaw line and work up to below the eye socket and back to jawline. Work to the outside of the jaw line in a similar manner. 2. Work from the nose in an arc up to the temples to smooth out crows feet and lift. Step 3: Tightening Use a sweeping action from the middle to the outer face and back. Use this action over the whole of the lower face. Be responsive to your clients feedback to the intensity and adjust settings accordingly. At no time should the client feel the heat is excessive. Step 4. Stabilising 7
One of the key signs of ageing is sagging jowls and cheeks, spend more time on these areas, lifting as you slide up the face and being smooth on the way back to the chin. Nasolabial lines 1. Pay attention to the nasolabial lines work from the chin to the tip of the nostrils. 2. Sweep backwards and forwards from the side of the nose to the temples. Eye 8
1. You should use a low intensity and the smallest tip (10 mm). Test client tolerance. 2. Start from the inside of the lower eye and sweep to the temple and back. Using a curved action will help to eliminate crows feet. 3. As in picture 2 start inside the top brow and sweep out to the temple and back. Keep the applicator just under the brow and not on the fleshy part of the upper eye. 4. Work from the eyebrows up to the hairline and back. Bony areas will be more sensitive so set the energy levels accordingly. Forehead 9
1. Make sweeping movements from the middle to the outside of the forehead and back to the middle. 2. Work from the middle of the nose up and down to firm and reduce wrinkles. 3. Make further sweeping movements this time from in between the brows and back. Neck Use gentle up and down movements on the neck work from the base to the top of the neck. 10
There are many nerve endings in this area, ask the client to lay flat on the couch and remove any neck pillow or support. Stomach Radio frequency can be used to tighten skin all over the body. You can use a series of movements to firm and tighten. Back Remember that the client will feel more intensity on bony areas so adjust settings accordingly Pay attention: During treatment, you should tell the client to relax and stay still, they should never touch the operator, especially the RF handle, as this will cause a mild electric shock. Skin care after treatment 1.Use some sunscreen lotion in case of sunburn 11
