DIRECTIONS TO CANDIDATES 1. You are requested to bring the following PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES with you when you report for the practical examination: - Protection cream - Towels (20) - Setting lotion and gel - Neck strip (optional) - End papers - Cotton batting - Neck duster - Pincurl clips - Water spray bottle - Perm and neutralizing solutions (opening device as required) - Finishing rinse (optional) - Barbicide (optional) - Shampoo - Brushes - Combs - Professional blow dryer - Du-all clips or jaws - Cutting cape - Magnetic rollers and clips - Clippers, scissors, and/or razor: You may use any of the aforementioned tools (no specialty clipper guides or blades of any kind to be used). - Permanent wave rods adequate perm rods - adequate for your model. (approximately 100) - Applicator or brush and bowl for applying tint (setting gel) - Moisture repellent cape (for chemical work) - Timer - Plastic cap - Hair spray NOTE: Positively no towels or any part of your supplies or equipment can be borrowed at the examination. Points may not be awarded to candidates who fail to provide themselves with the supplies and equipment listed above. You are obliged to bring other professional products and supplies to complete all services on the exam. 2. Floor Dryers will be supplied at the place of examination. 3. HAIRSTYLIST MODEL - You are required to supply your own models. Models shall not be a hairstylist or associated with the trade. The models must be in need of a haircut and agree to having it cut (a minimum of 1 /2 inch or 12mm of hair to be removed) and permed. THE MODELS MUST AGREE TO SIGN A RELEASE FORM AND HAVE A STRAND TEST AND PATCH TEST PRIOR TO THE EXAM DATE. TAPER HAIRCUT MODEL - It is the responsibility of the candidate to supply a model who has a full head of hair. Your model must be prepared to accept a taper haircut similar to the enclosed picture. 4. Please be advised, the permanent wave may not be a finished hairstyle, and lunch arrangements are at your own discretion. 5. Candidate hygiene - Every candidate shall be clean in his/her habits and dress in professional attire (no denim clothing. No open toe shoes.) 6. Candidates shall not display badges or pins identifying them with any particular school or salon. 7. Please arrive at least thirty minutes before the examination for your station preparation.

HAIRSTYLIST PRACTICAL EXAMINATION CONTENT You will be expected to demonstrate your skill and knowledge in the following sequence. AREA MAXIMUM TIME OPERATION TAPER HAIRCUT PERMANENT WAVE - 30 Min. Techniques must be scissors over comb or clipper over comb (no thinning or specialty shears). You are required to do a natural hairline tapered haircut. Taper on the sides must expose the entire ear. Taper on the back must be a clean natural hairline taper cleaned up but not blocked. Top length and overall shaping must blend without creating a weight line. Each candidate is required to bring a model with a full head of hair, willing to accept a tapered haircut (a minimum of 1/2 inch or 12 mm of hair to be removed). Specialty clipper blades or guides of any kind are not allowed. 2 Hours Preparation of model. Sectioning and wrapping of the entire head. Preparation and application of solutions. LUNCH BREAK 60 Min. Provided the morning services are completed on time. HAIR COLOURING DEMONSTRATION 20 Min. Virgin hair to be prepared as for a colour, setting gel only to be applied. (It is assumed the hair is in perfect condition with no previous colour or damage; perfect hair root to end.) Sectioning with clips only. LAYERED HAIRCUT 30 Min. Complete haircut with scissors. Must be a basic layered haircut. Minimum of 1 /2 inch or 12mm of hair to be removed. HAIRSTYLING - FULL SERVICE 90 Min. You will demonstrate a wet set using three different types of pincurls, clockwise, counter clockwise and stand-up and rollers. A minimum of three of each pincurl must be shown. End papers or cotton are allowed in support of pincurls. You will perform a finished blow dry style. Marking will be based on blow drying technique as well as the finished hairstyle. You are responsible for demonstrating suitability and creativity for your model. DEPORTMENT AND APTITUDE Conduct and grooming at professional standards. TIME LIMIT 6 Hours Although the times allocated total 5 1 /2 hours, the total time for the exam includes lunch break and marking time and it is expected it will take approximately 7 hours. PASS MARK 70% The purpose of having more than one marker in attendance at the practical examinations is to obtain the broadest possible trade expertise. This expertise is applied in assessing the individual skill operations, to be able to average the marks awarded and be as fair as possible regarding the candidate s practical ability. The marks are awarded throughout the examination and as each skill is demonstrated. All marks awarded, by necessity, are final.
