Volume 10 Issue 13 March 16, 2018 We want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of our families a wonderful Spring Break. This is a time to recharge ourselves with whatever activities you enjoy. Some of you will be travelling away from Victoria and others will be enjoying themselves closer to home. Whatever your adventures we hope they will leave you with wonderful memories. Term two was busy, with added fun through- Family Literacy Day, French dance lessons, Pink Shirt Day, and our student teachers, and Student Led Conferences. Our final term brings the school musical; rugby, track for students in grades 3,4,&5; visits to Middle schools for our grade 5s; swimming for grade 3s; the Heritage Tea and Oak Bay Tea Party, and of course there still many learning opportunities for our children to explore. We look forward to seeing you after our break. School reopens on Wednesday, April 4th. Enjoy spending time with your children. Spring Musical - Musical Mashup Costume List All Junior and Senior choir members will require a costume for the chorus when they are on the risers. They will be wearing colourful t-shirts and black pants or skirts. Junior Choir will be borrowing their t-shirts and the Senior Choir will be purchasing their own through the school at a reduces price and keeping them once the performance is over. BACKSTAGE, TECHNICAL, AND LIGHTING CREWS will dress in black. The following list is for SENIOR CHOIR students with on-stage roles. All shared or borrowed costumes must be returned to the music room immediately after each use. KIDS AND TEACHER Teacher skirt (can be provided) and blouse or adult looking dress, nylons (tights), shoes Lucy bright, over-the-top clothing ruffles, bows, etc George/Georgia school uniform provided. Need white shirt. Hair very neat and tidy, socks provided. Dallas cool kid costume could be leather jacket and white tee (white tee can be provided) and jeans or basketball gear ball cap, sport gear WIZARD OF OZ Dorothy - dress and ruby slippers provided. Hair in braids, requires white, foldover socks Lion costume provided. On Wednesday and Thursday this week we held Student Led Conferences for as part of our reporting to parents. It was great to see so many families in the school sharing in the learning their children are doing. Each class presented something different to parents, but everywhere students were sharing what they were working on. Speaking in both French and English children were bringing their learning to life for their parents. Children made use of Chromebooks, ipads, sculptures, games, they showed off art work, creative writing, math problems, science experiments, Do you remember this evening from last year? Well if not here is the scoop! Stephanie Novak, our representative to Canadian Parents for French will be organizing it again this year. What happens is simple. A number of French Immersion students from v Lansdowne Middle School come to Willows one evening and read to our Grade 1 French Immersion students in the library for about 40 minutes. Students come in their pajamas, bring a stuffy and enjoy the story. This year the date that has been set for this event is Thursday, April 12th. Reserve it today! 1000X5 1000 Books by Age Five Children s Book Recycling Project Greater Victoria Take Spring Break to Round Up Extra Books A community that values and shares literacy is a community that prospers. Every young child who is read to before starting school is more likely to see reading and learning as pleasant and achievable. We thank you for your donations of books for babies and preschoolers. This last week, 12 volunteers cleaned, labelled, and gift bagged books for Songhees Preschool, Victoria Native Friendship Centre and several Best Babies programs in total over 700 books. Thanks to you, next week we will do the same for other families. But beyond numbers, the difference that you are making in the lives of so many of our children's families is immeasurable. They would not have these books and a love of reading without you. Please take spring break to check the corners of your house and continue to drop your book donation into the pink bin just outside the office door. Big Buddy, Little Buddy, Littler Buddy Today students in Mme Henry s, Mme Davis, Mme Hallam s and Mme Anderson s classes spent their Buddy Time together. It seems that puppets were the order of the day. Mme Henry s and Mme Davis classes have been making puppets as a Buddy activity. Both worked on the puppets with Mme Henry s class writing the script. Once that was done it was time to find an audience. The kindergarten students were perfect for the job. What a l lovely way to spend some J time learning and sharing together.
