May August 2018

Making dance requires engaging with the unexpected I am continually surprised by the numerous, unusual and generative ideas that result from the moving body. So I am energised that this summer s programme focuses on dance artists and choreographers researching and sharing their investigations at Siobhan Davies Studios. We welcome Katye Coe as our first Torchlight Artist. Working with us to share her research for a year, Katye will investigate experiences of surrender in her dance practice and in life. Our final Traces Commission with Bernardo Ortiz is the beginning of collaborative process between a visual artist, a musician and three choreographers. Our Open Choreography programme continues with a performance evening and two more residencies that include humour and sound within choreography with Tate n Lyle and Fionn Duffy, and disability access and object design with Julie Cleves and Robbie Synge. Maria Hassabi, Lucy Suggate and Nicola Conibere share their practices through invitations to participate in workshops and courses. We are not sure what is going to happen, and that's the best part. Open Choreography Be Part of the Process This summer dance artists and choreographers will experiment in our distinctive spaces through our annual Open Choreography residencies and regular performance evenings. Following a successful international open call for proposals, selected artists will be in residence and presenting work at our Studios. Open Choreography Performance Evening Fri 15 Jun, 7.30pm 12 / 8 conc (plus booking fees) Join us to experience and engage in dialogue around evolving works by four dance artists that share an interest in the relationship between movement and sound. This evening features works at various stages in their development by Elise Nuding, Sara Ruddock and Rosalie Wahlfrid-Shaw. Open Choreography Residencies Visit our website to find out about related events Tate n Lyle with Fionn Duffy 23 Jul 5 Aug Interdisciplinary artists Fionn Duffy and Tate n Lyle (Paul Hughes and Rohanne Udall) intermingle choreography with sonic thought to explore relations between sound and the body. Their residency will test and toy with a variety of gestures, materials and means of artistic presentation. Julie Cleves and Robbie Synge 28 Aug 7 Sept Julie Cleves and Robbie Synge will continue their long-term work, which includes proactively challenging personal disability access issues through the design of objects and collaborative, physical actions. They will seek input from experts in design and architecture to develop existing and new movement sequences together. Julie Cleves & Robbie Synge, photo courtesy of Robbie Synge

Research Question and Experiment Siobhan Davies Dance supports choreography that foregrounds investigation and research as an integral part of the making process through residencies, academic collaborations and our regular Doing Days.
