The gallery launches " The Return of the Taj Garage: Finery & More From Nepal & India" with an Open House Reception Friday, December 4, 4:30-7:30PM, 689 Beaver Meadow Road, Cooperstown. The exhibit and sale will also be open Sat. Dec. 5, 10-5PM and Sunday December 6, 11-3PM. Browsers will find a rich array of handcrafted items, many reflecting traditions going back millennia, including pottery, jewelry, household fabrics and smart apparel, from handblocked cottons to lavish silks and wool-silk blends, and Buddhist objects. Admission is free. "All works are selected on site from people I've been working with for many years as artists, designers, or merchants," noted Clorfeine, who selected the offerings for this annual show: brocade bags and jewelry from tiny shops in Kathmandu, Nepal; Buddhist objects; mufflers and 'paisley' shawls made in Kashmir; cloth animal dolls; the famous Neerja blue pottery made cottage-industry style in villages in Jaipur, Rajasthan; casual apparel for men; elegant jackets pieced from vintage saris; kurtas; and "the incredible colors of weavers' silk and cashmere scarves from the famous covered bazaar in Varanasi, India." Clorfeine will also be unveiling his newest treasures from his very recent 2015 pilgrimage, his first to Nepal since its horrific earthquakes.
Clorfeine, based in the Hudson Valley, first became interested in the rich array of artisans' creations following a 6-month stay in Southeast Asia in the mid 1990s. He returns annually with his wife Jenny Bates as part of their Buddhist journey of faith. They also regularly visit artists and vendors, who have become good friends, in Boudha and Patan, Kathmandu, and in India. "Because this is not a retail business, the mark-ups on our goods are between wholesale and retail prices," Clorfeine explained. Clorfeine's connection to Cooperstown goes back to the 1980s when he was a New York Foundation for the Arts Visiting Artist Fellow. Eager to bring Clorfeine to Cooperstown, Sydney Waller, then founding director of the non-profit art space Gallery 53, helped establish a community-wide cultural collaboration, supported in part by UCCCA's Arts in Education program (Oneonta).During this unique weeklong community residency, Clorfeine developed interactive programs for a broad range of ages: from high school to preschools (Art Farm and Head Start). He established a friendship with drama teacher Mary Jo Merk and the legendary high school English teacher Nick Alicino, as well as with enrichment program coordinator Mary Marx and arts advocate Sydney Waller. Over the years he also co-presented workshops with Otego artist Charles Bremer. To this day Clorfeine regularly returns to Cooperstown to teach his acclaimed creative-writing workshops, working closely with English teacher Rebecca Burk-Sciallo. He also annually teaches in Switzerland, Germany and India. For further information please contact Sydney Waller at LeArtGarage@gmail.com, LeArtGarageCooperstown at Facebook, or 607-547-5327.
