SUCRABLEND ALFACOS Sucrablend SP V2 Sucrose Stearate & Sucrose Palmitate What is Sucrablend? Sucrablend SP V2 is an ingredient used in conjunction with Sucragel to improve the high temperature stability of formulations. Sucrablend does not affect the clarity or viscosity of your formulation, it just structures the gel to make it more robust and less prone to oil leaching at temperatures of up to 5 C. Made from a blend of two sugar esters, it is safe, mild and suitable for natural formulations (Ecocert approved). www.alfacos.co.uk
1% natural oil thickening and emulsifying ingredients Guidelines Usage level to make an oily gel: CF & AOF - 2 to 25%; AP - 15% Usage level in emulsions: 5 to 8% ph: 4-8 What viscosity can I expect with Sucragel? To decrease viscosity, add water or glycerine To increase viscosity, add waxes, butters, clays or plant powders to your formulation In general, using SUCRAGEL AOF will give higher viscosity gels than using CF or AP Addition of SUCRABLEND SP at low levels does not affect viscosity More SUCRAGEL = lower viscosity! These were compared with a moisturising SLES based cleanser. Each of the three products were massaged onto the subject s skin before being rinsed off. Readings were then taken using a corneometer at periods of 2 hours and a comparison was made with an untreated area of the skin. By using Sucragel at 2% in an oily gel cleanser, skin will remain significantly hydrated after 8 hours. Skin stays hydrated all day and no need for moisturiser! 5
SUCRAMULSE ALFACOS Sucramulse 163 Glyceryl Stearate & Cetyl Alcohol & Sucrose Stearate & Sucrose Tristearate What is Sucramulse? 1% PEG-free emulsifier forming a stable liquid crystal structure n-ionic, for all oil-in-water emulsions Made with natural, high quality, renewable and non-gmo raw materials Creates emulsions with a luxurious skin feel and improved moisturisation, and excellent skin feel independent of the oil phase Safe, mild and biodegradable Long term stability of formulations by minimising emulsion coalescence Ecocert approved Applications Face creams Hand and foot creams Body butters Lotions and many more! Creamy make-up removers Sunscreens Haircare Baby products Formulating with Sucramulse Versatile and easy to use, Sucramulse produces emulsions with a fine and stable structure, making it suitable as a base for a wide variety of formulations. By varying the level of Sucramulse different products can be made, from light lotions to rich body butters, all with a characteristic luxurious texture. www.alfacos.co.uk
1% PEG-free natural emulsifier based on sugar chemistry Guidelines Use between 2 and 6% Oil Phase: 5% > 35% Water Phase: 65% > 95% Recommended to use stabilising agents in water phase for high temperature stability: Carbomer, Sucraclear HC-31, Sucrathix VX ph: 4-8 Standard two phase emulsification Determination of skin hydration A 24h moisturisation study was conducted on 2 subjects using a 4% Sucramulse 163 simple cream base. The product was massaged into the skin of the inner sides of the forearm and readings were then taken (corneometry) every 2 hours for 24 hours and the parallel reading taken on untreated skin. Conclusion: after 24 hours skin is still significantly moisturised compared with untreated skin. can claim 24 moisturisation in a finished product! ALFACOS 5 What viscosity can I expect with Sucramulse? By increasing the usage level of Sucramulse 163 in the formulation, the viscosity will increase gradually. Versatile range of oily gel bases enabling easy formulation of a wide variety of finished products Formulating with Sucrabases The Sucrabases already resemble finished products, so minimal formulating is needed. Just two or three ingredients can be added to make a simple cleanser, or a multi-step process can be used to make a more complicated formulation - the choice is yours. Guidelines Oils - can be added at a level of up to 5% by weight of Sucrabase. Oils can be considered as: Vegetable Oils, Esters, Silicones, Synthetic Oils, Essential Oils, Fragrance Oils, Oil-based extracts or actives, Butters and Waxes (must be melted first). Oils may be able to be incorporated at a level of up to 1%, but stability cannot be guaranteed. Glycerine - can give a honey-like texture, and can give a pourable, clear product at up to 25% by weight. Powders - talc, kaolin, bentonite and plant powders can be added to change both the texture and the colour of the product. Scrub particles can be added, such as loofah, silica, bamboo, sugar and salt. Powdered or liquid surfactants can be added to give a foaming oily gel. Water or water-based extracts or actives should be added to a formulation as the last step. Any amount of water can be added to Sucrabase depending on the viscosity and quantity of oil phase required. Water based gels can also be added. Most of the above steps can be undertaken at room temperature and with minimal stirring. Your product must be ph 4-8 to ensure stability. The Sucrabase range Sucrabase C Our premium product, its crystal clear appearance makes it suitable for premium cleansers and scrubs. Sucrabase SF This has a 1% natural vegetable oil base, making it a good choice for natural brands. Sucrabase SF Bio As SF, but formulated with organic ingredients to make it 98.3% organically certified. ALFACOS 9

Natural thickeners, stabilisers and rheology modifiers Formulating with Sucrathix Use at between.4 and 2.5% depending on viscosity required. Disperse Sucrathix in water at room temperature and mix using a high shear mixer (e.g. Silverson). Mix for 2 minutes until a smooth dispersion is formed. The mixture may be heated to aid dispersion. Other ingredients can be added following this step. For emulsions, the gel formed can be added to the heated oil phase and mixed further to make a cream or lotion. What viscosity can I expect with Sucrathix? Increasing the level of Sucrathix causes the viscosity to increase gradually. Viscosity, cp 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 ALFACOS.5 1. 1.5 2. 2.5 % of Sucrathix VX Formulating with Sucraclear Forms crystal clear gels in water. Use at levels between.5 and 2.5% depending on viscosity required. Stable between ph 4-11 and with electrolytes. Disperse powder in water at room temperature, then heat to 7 C with homogenisation. Leave to cool and gel will reach final viscosity. If using in emulsions use the thickened water as the aqueous phase. Stable with most preservatives and other ingredients but clarity may be lost if not fully water soluble.
