A.O. - I first joined the yachting industry as a deck hand, which soon made me realize that my future would quite definitely be the sea! I completed my studies, obtained a sheaf of certificates, and have never stopped learning. Now, after over ten years as a captain, I still set my sights on more ambitious career projects in the world of top-notch yachting. How important is the crew s appearance, to themselves, and to their clients? A.O. - The crew s appearance is one of the most important things on board: during the winter period, we work hard to maintain the yacht at the highest level and improve safety on board. But during the summer, all the crew s energy is focused on the owner s enjoyment and that of his guests. At this point, a happy and confident crew, and especially their appearence, are extremely important. What is your experience with Dolphin Wear and the solution it provides? A.O. - During my career, I have come into contact with several enterprises, some good, some less so, and they naturally always wanted me to change! The most important aspect is discovering new materials and knowing how to use them in the yachting industry, while playing close attention to style.... Factors taken into account by Dolphin Wear, which shares Captain Orrao s beliefs in hard work, ambition, and a constant drive to exceed expectations. 04 05 trends on sea chosen by nature In the world of yachting, blue surfs along on its wave of popularity And now s the time to give it your full attention, as blue is slated to be the N 1 colour for 2016! Fifty shades of blue By far the world s most favourite colour, blue was chosen by nature for the sky and the sea. Since then, our perception of this fascinating colour has gradually evolved Back in 2500 B.C., the Egyptians were the first to produce blue dyes, but also the first civilization to invent a word for the colour. In the early 18th century, an alchemist s accidental discovery of Prussian blue was later followed by the appearance of cobalt blue and ultramarine, which had a huge impact of the work of French artists. The origins of navy blue speak for themselves. Yet some African tribes still do not have a word for blue, and find it hard to distinguish between blue and green. Blue has in fact evolved to become the most complex of colours, its many different shades conveying trust, loyalty, authority, dignity, serenity, spirituality, but also coldness, depression ( singing the blues ), and masculinity ( blue for a boy ). While blue is rarely found in plant-life, our fondness for the colour is possibly explained by the way it lends itself so easily to fabrics. Cool crisp cotton and omnipresent denim, but also synthetic materials such as nylon, polyester, jersey or satin, and technical fabrics offering high resistance. Colours such as red or green do not always enhance a material with such complimentary effect. In the world of fashion, a dark blue suit is traditional business attire, whereas blue jeans are worn worldwide as trendy/casual wear. In between the two, one can opt for pretty dresses, smart shirts and ties in pale or sky blue, cobalt, indigo, turquoise, royal or navy blue, all of their nuances, as well as the latest trend, metallic blue. They all adapt perfectly to a wide range of styles, whether for sportswear, uniforms, work overalls, casual or formal wear, even haute couture Sports brands in particular have gradually extended their use of blue to other product lines, while also borrowing shades more typically seen in other types of clothing. In the world of yachting, blue surfs along on its wave of popularity. Nowadays you can select just the right hue on the Pantone colour chart to express your personality and add further refinement to your yacht. Project management is thus a recognized form of expertise in the field - more than that, a science! Dealing with months, years, teams, companies, countries, always aiming to meet the highest level of owner requirements! So what about your project for uniforms? What? A project for uniforms? Are you kidding? OK, let s back up. Yachting is all about esthetics, elegance, style, distinction, difference, right? Any objective expert, including owners and guests asked to list the most important esthetic points, will say: the yacht (for sure!), its interior design, furniture, decoration and... flowers? Hmm... Crew elegance and stylishness will definitely be on the list, before flowers in fact! So when talking about one of the yacht s five most important esthetic criteria, we can, and indeed should, consider a uniform project to ensure high marks for this point. When you start to talk about uniforms, the first reaction from captains or chief stewards is: A A TOUCH OF DISTINCTION The trusty and well-beloved polo shirt is being treated to a well-deserved revamp. Chic but also original, a clever new detail subtly personalises this essential item of everyday wear. With regards to the yacht and uniform company, what is the right approach? nightmare! Sizing, delivery times, colours, nonavailability, discontinued lines... What a wonderful world! You can make all the combinations you want, you just need to know your constraints... and, of course, the owner s wishes! The equation is quite simple to solve when you think about it. If you need urgent delivery, and significant volume, you will have to find products in stock and compromise on style, using personalization with embroidery or printing to set it apart. If you require very small quantities and are not in any particular hurry, you can ask for handmade customization if you have the right partner. For normal delivery times and quantities, you can nowadays elaborate the style to more or less the limit of your imagination. But don t set limits on your imagination, let it run! Close your eyes and feel the touch of an Egyptian cotton, remember that timeless marinière worn by Greta Garbo in an old movie, imagine it with stripes just the right colour and width Guests will love it and, from a less romantic point of view, you will appreciate the ironing time you will save with a fragrant, hi-tech, fast-dry fabric. Sketch out the most comfortable and stylish fitting, and dress the entire (and happy) crew! The nightmare is slowly becoming a dream. The last topic you ever wanted to think about before the season becomes one of the yacht s most distinctive esthetic features... Time to wake up! Is it possible or not? For sure it is! Uniforms just need to be considered as the subject of a project, small but real, whatever the crew numbers or quantity of products. Step by step, you will also have to work on the fourth element in the equation, the price. But don t be too scared or cautious about that, prices have to be right, competitive, and fair. That s it, that s all! So taking as much time as you can, thinking more about style than sizes (the last point you will have to manage, but only at the end), expressing the spirit of the yacht, the owner s taste or preferences, organizing your approach as you would prepare a refit In short, by managing uniforms as a project, you will make it an integral part of your yachting assignment. Turning a nightmare into a dream, or let s say a normal and positive subject, then making the dream come true: simple, practical, comfortable and elegant.
