Arc flash balaclavas paired with goggles offer an alternative to the traditional beekeeper s style hoods and are an approved form of head protection according to OSHA. Balaclava goggle systems are only recommended for areas where arc flash protection is required but there is no potential shrapnel hazard present. A hazard assessment must be conducted to fully understand each task based potential hazard, prior to determining if a balaclava and goggle may be considered for use. These combinations are tested as a system to meet ASTM F2178 and should be worn as such in order to provide the expected level of protection. It is a lighter weight faceshield that has multi-lock positioning capabilities, which allows the user to secure the faceshield in multiple positions, including above the hard hat. ARC FLASH PPE GARMENTS Hazard Risk Category (HRC) was a term used by NFPA 70E to refer to levels of protection required for various job applications. In the updated 2015 NFPA 70E Standard this term was changed to Arc Flash PPE and HRC was removed from the standard. One thing that hasn t changed is our use of HRC for arc resistant garments. We will continue to use this familiar term to assist our customers with quickly identifying what level of protection our PPE clothing meets. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN FLAME RESISTANT (FR) AND ARC RATED (AR) FABRIC? Scan the QR code above to see how FR reflective trim and Non-FR reflective trim react when an ignition source is removed. This is a great question that is often asked by customers. The simple answer is: All arc rated fabrics are flame resistant. However, all flame resistant fabrics are NOT arc rated. The long answer is a bit more complicated and revolves around textile and garment testing standards. In order to be considered flame resistant, the fabric must not melt or drip and cannot exceed the char length (per ASTM F1506, less than 6 ; per NFPA 2112, less than 4 ) or afterflame time when tested according to ASTM D6413. This test method measures the vertical flame resistance of fabrics. According to specifications for flame resistant fabrics and garments, once the ignition source has been removed the fabric must self-extinguish, cannot melt or drip, and the char length cannot exceed the specific test specification. This test is perfect to establish if a fabric is flammable (will catch on fire and/or will melt and/or drip) or flame resistant (self-extinguishes) in a controlled test setting. Arc rated (AR) fabrics are tested to ASTM 1959, which requires any fabric submitted for testing to be flame resistant. This test method is a bit more complicated, and is used to measure and describe the properties of fabrics in response to convective and radiant energy generated by an electric arc under controlled laboratory conditions. By simulating an electric arc, the test measures the incident energy on a fabric that results in a 50% probability of the on-set of second-degree skin burn injury. Arc ratings can be reported as ATPV (Arc Thermal Performance Value) or EBT (EBT Breakopen Threshold Energy). Summary: All AR (arc rated) garments are FR (flame resistant), but not all FR is AR! Be sure you are selecting the right PPE. ARC FLASH KITS Arc flash kits are commonly referred to as task based PPE. Task based PPE is intended to be put on for a specific job function and then removed once the job is complete. It is recommended that these garments be put on over an employees FR/AR daily garments or some form of FR/AR garments. To simplify safety we have conveniently packaged our arc flash PPE into kits. These arc flash kits can easily be tagged with employees name, stored in work vehicles, or staged in areas that require a specific level of arc flash PPE. Each garment has the arc rating clearly displayed on the exterior, which allows safety personnel to ensure employees are wearing the proper arc flash PPE. RUBBER VOLTAGE GLOVES & ACCESSORIES Rubber voltage gloves, also known as electrical insulating gloves and/or rubber insulating gloves, are a very important piece of PPE when working with electricity. This one piece of PPE must follow a specific initial test and retest schedule in order to maintain compliance. Gloves must be put into use within 12 months of the test date stamped on the front of the glove. Our ArcGuard rubber voltage gloves are in stock and newly tested to increase the shelf life. Once gloves are issued for use, they must be retested within 6 months of the date they were put into use. This cycle is continued for the life of the glove. To increase the life of rubber voltage gloves, it is a requirement to always wear leather glove protectors and follow the user instruction guide provided with each glove. For additional information, refer to ASTM F496. We offer the three most common levels of protection in our ArcGuard Rubber Voltage Gloves. The gloves should be free from cuts, holes, tears, chemicals, and embedded objects. It is also important to look for any changes in the texture of the gloves, like cracking, hardening, swelling, stickiness, softening, or brittleness. Gloves displaying any of these characteristics should not be used and should be further inspected.
