The cortex helps determine the strength, elasticity, volume and texture of hair if damaged, it becomes weak, brittle and prone to breakage. When hair is damaged by things such as color processing or heat styling, the cuticle rips and tears, leaving the inner cortex vulnerable to damage, as well. This adversely afects hair in the following ways: Loss of Shine: Healthy hair is shiny because the scale-like layers of the cuticle neatly lay down on top of one another, creating a relectivesurface. There are four balancing zones on the scalp (see diagram 2). Apply Caviar Clinical Professional Exfoliating Scalp Treatment to wet scalp one zone at a time. 2. Using the Alterna scalp brush, distribute the product throughout zones 1-4 using gentle circlar motions. 3. Once the product is evenly distributed, massage the scalp using the Balancing Head Massage Technique. Focusing on one zone at a time, massage all of the balancing zones on the scalp. 4. Appendix Silicones 101 - Not All Silicones Are The Same Silicones are a large and varied class of compounds, with diferent types for diferent functionalities and they're traditionally used to provide frizz control, smoothing, shine and softness beneits to hair. Alterna uses a blend of several types of highgrade silicones that help to create a light-weight veil on the hair versus using a thicker, higher molecular weight, single silicone that would heavily coat the hair and result in product build-up. Volatile Silicones (Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, etc): Low Molecular Weight Evaporate Completely, no residue Used in combo with heavier silicones to make lighter Higher Molecular Weight (Dimethiconol, etc) Thicker but pourable Typically used in lower cost Frizz-Serums Diluted with Volatile Silicones to make serum less heavy on hair Silicone Fluid (Dimethicone): Available in huge rage of weights (very volatile to very high) Typically separates the iner grades to the heavier grades Surfactants 101 - Cleansing away confusion! Surfactant: A foaming agent used for cleansing. The most widely used surfactants in shampoos are Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALS) and Magnesium Laureth Sulfate. All of these ingredients are sulfate based. The concern about sulfates it that they have been linked as a major skin irritant associated with potential hair loss. There is also concern that sulfates are a possible carcinogen. Generally the most harsh surfactants are Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Surfactants denoted by the term Laureth" (SLES & ALES) are slightly less harsh than ALS & SLS but are still sulfate based. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacteate: Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (Alterna s sulfate-free surfactant) is derived from coconut and palm oils. It is a safe, skin friendly surfactant for both skin and hair. This mild plant-derived surfactant creates a rich, luxurious lather that efectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria without stripping or drying sensitive skin. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is also hydrophillic, which means it is attracted to water, enabling it to dissolve more readily in water and thus providing superior rinseability. 99
