I Wheeldo s Ciderella, the fial program i the S.F. Ballet seaso, which rus through May 7, Hummel steps out of the corps to portray Clemetie, oe of Ciderella s stepsisters. Whe did you kow you wated to be a ballet dacer? I have two older sibligs, ad my mom put all of us i ballet; I started takig lessos whe I was about five. My brother wet ito sports, ad my sister loved ballet but did t wat to make a career out of it. I defiitely kew I was iterested, but I did t get serious util I was about 12 or 13 that s whe I had to start adjustig A Ciderella story I its fial program this seaso, the Sa Fracisco Ballet reprises choreographer Christopher Wheeldo s Ciderella, which he reimagied i a woderfully Broadway show-y way, full of faciful effects ad uexpected humor. Early o, we meet the Youg Ciderella, Youg Price ad his fried Bejami, all portrayed by Sa Fracisco Ballet School studets. Bejami hooks up with Clemetie, the stepsister portrayed by eighborhood residet Elle Rose Hummel (above). my schedule for ballet ad sacrificig certai thigs. I wet from three or four days of ballet to six, ad my mom had to drive pretty far for my lessos. The whe I was 16, I moved to Sa Fracisco to take lessos with the Sa Fracisco Ballet School. At 16? ad by yourself? Yes, the school has a dormitory o Jackso Street i Pacific Heights. I remember how woderful the trasitio was at such a youg age. It really helped to be with kids my age who loved ballet like me, eve though we came from differet parts of the world. Beig i a ew city ca be loely at first, but Jackso House felt like home, ad my frieds became family. We were so fortuate to be i such a beautiful eighborhood, surrouded by artists who share the same goal. That s how I got ivolved i the eighborhood. The whe I got accepted ito the compay I had to move out, ad I was lucky eough to fid a apartmet here. I thik [S.F. Ballet artistic director] Helgi Tomasso lives o the same street. What about dacig as Clemetie? Clemetie is a bit softer tha her sister, Edwia. She s the more geeky oe. She has glasses ad she s a little clumsy. I see her more as the positive, helpful oe. There s a ERIK TOMASSON sweet side to her. Before Ciderella, Clemetie was the oe who had her place i the household. Where the stepmother ad stepsisters are beig mea or hittig Ciderella, she does t really wat to; you see a little seesaw process with her. The dacers really have to be actors, too, do t they? You ca get really absorbed i the steps, but oce I paste those glasses o, I m Clemetie. I love beig i character. You have to believe it as much as or more tha the audiece does. The costumes are amazig. The sets, too like the table, ad the way it rotates at the begiig as we re eatig the porridge. I love that part of the ballet, because it gives you a momet to get absorbed i it. Ad I ll be dacig Sprig, too. Sprig has the gree wig ad gree costume, gree face pait, eve glitter o the arch of the eyebrows, framig the gree. It always feels like puttig leaves o my face. What is a typical day off like for you? I ll fid time to take a walk dow Fillmore or meet up with a fried. I love La Mediterraee; the people are always super ice i there. I love their salmo. I love the atmosphere it s very authetic ad very cozy ad I like that it s ot super loud. Palmer s has very good driks; sometimes I ll meet with frieds there. I love the atmosphere there, too, ad I ve always ejoyed whatever I ve gotte. Fillmore Bakeshop the food is always really fresh, ad it s very family orieted. HARLEM OF THE WEST REVISITED Together, They Wrote the Book Keepig Alive the Fillmore s Jazz Era This eighborhood has gotte ito me L og before they met, Lewis Watts ad Elizabeth Pepi Silva had somethig i commo: Both had wadered ito Red s Shoe Shie Parlor at 1549 Fillmore to iquire about the extesive collectio of vitage photographs of Fillmore s jazz joits that lied his walls. Ad both had bee kicked out. Before he could retur to try agai, Watts leared that Red Powell had died ad his treasure trove of photographs had apparetly bee lost. Oly years later would he lear they had i fact bee saved ad were i the back room of Reggie Pettus s New Chicago Barbershop. Those photographs became the backboe of a remarkable eighborhood history, Harlem of the West: The Sa Fracisco Fillmore Jazz Era, co-authored by Silva ad Watts ad published by Chroicle Books i 2006. The photographs were widely exhibited ad the book sold out. A secod editio was published i 2008. But by 2010 the book was out of prit ad hard to fid. I could t go o Fillmore without somebody askig about the book, says Watts. So we decided to republish it ourselves ad do it the way they had always thought it should be doe. The third editio, which premiered April 29, is bigger ad better i every way. It is larger, with more promiet photographs, ad it icludes a hudred more pages, more elegatly desiged, ad may more photographs ad oral histories. Amog the most sigificat additios: photographs ad oral histories from exotic LEWIS WATTS Lottie the Body ad T-Boe Walker o stage at Fillmore s Champage Supper Club. Author Elizabeth Pepi Silva meets Lottie Claibore i Detroit. Fidig Lottie the Body Lottie Claibore studied dace as a tee i New York. She met Harlem Globetrotter Goose Tatum at the Champage Supper Club ad the two became a fixture i the eighborhood. The club was big ad beautiful, Lottie remembers. Mixed. The show started at midight. The last show was at 5 i the morig. You kow, it was like that i Sa Fracisco. Excitig. She ow lives i Detroit, ad her oral history ad photographs from her collectio have bee added to the ew editio of Harlem of the West. dacer Lottie the Body Claibore, discovered livig i Detroit, ad club ower Leola Kig, who had iitially refused to participate. A exhibitio of photographs from the book is ow showig at the Africa America Arts ad Cultural Complex at 762 Fulto Street. I m already thikig of thigs I could look ito further, says Silva. I ever thought this was a lifetime project. This eighborhood has gotte ito me. LOTTIE CLAIBORNE COLLECTION Elizabeth Pepi Silva did the research ad writig ad edited the oral histories. Lewis Watts was resposible for editig ad doig the cosiderable digital restoratio of the may photographs that illustrate the story. Together they have captured the facts ad the flavor of the Fillmore jazz era. Elizabeth s Story My itroductio to the eighborhood was i the late 1960s from the backseat of the family car. We would pass through the Fillmore o our way to Sears Roebuck at the top of Geary Boulevard ad Masoic Street. I recall beig fasciated by the blocks of empty lots, woderig what had happeed to all of the houses. I 1986, I was hired as the day maager ad historia of the Fillmore Auditorium. Bill Graham asked me to research ad write a short history of the buildig. I ucovered a itriguig story. The empty lots ad early deserted streets had, for more tha half a cetury, bee a vibrat, thrivig multicultural commuity filled with shops, restaurats ad etertaimet. The Fillmore s veues drew people from all over the world to play o their stages. Ad early all of it had bee wiped away by urba reewal. The aswer to my childhood mystery of the empty lots was fially solved. I fell i love with the Fillmore s history ad became obsessed. Lewis s Story I first came to Sa Fracisco i 1964, ad I had the chace to go to the Fillmore at the ed of its heyday. By 1990 I was a photographer, ad I bega lookig at the Fillmore as a part of my geeral iterest i Africa America commuities. By 1996 I was doig research for a report o the cultural history of the Fillmore for a proposal to make the area ito a Jazz Preservatio District. Red Powell s collectio of photographs ad other artifacts, alog with a growig body of work Elizabeth ad I have foud over the past 20 years, are a remarkable reflectio of the eighborhood s history. The ever-expadig archive has bee used i exhibitios ad documetary films, icludig the kqed productio The Fillmore, for which Elizabeth was associate producer. By Fracie Brevetti A customer walked i to the lightig shop o Divisadero with a vitage lamp from Eglad shaped as a youg boy flyig. It had bee crudely repaired. Each had held a socket. The arms had bee amputated to rewire the lamp, the glued back badly, with wirig pasted o the outside. The Ukraiia impresario of Yury s Lights & Beyod, Yury Budovlya, took o the miserable specime, detachig the arms ad removig the usightly adhesive. He rewired the lamp, soldered the arms back to the body, leavig the surface seamless ad with a seasoed patia. Whe the customer retured, she was so astoished to see her prized lamp beautifully restored that she erupted i grateful dace ad sog. Not watig to offed, Yury mirrored her with a sog ad a dace of his ow, thikig perhaps it was the appropriate America respose. Walkig ito Yury s Lights & Beyod at 1849 Divisadero is like steppig ito a forest of crystal: fixtures swigig from the ceilig, stadig up as floor lamps, glitterig o tables. Ad o shelves agaist the wall, there s all maer of lightig hardware ad bulbs. I buy from auctios, Yury says. Most of the lamps are from Europe, Frace, Italy, Spai ad the Uited States. Ad 99 percet of my lamps are vitage. For Yury, vitage meas aythig from the 1930s to the 1960s. That was the heyday of quality lamp makig, he says. After I ever overcharge, but I buy the best quality. That s a 35 percet icrease from the same period last year ad icludes some expesive properties, with o sigle-family home sellig for less tha $6 millio. Three of those homes had bee o the market for more tha four moths ad required price reductios to attract buyers. O the other side of the coi was 3515 Pacific, sittig directly across from the Presidio (above), which sold for $10.35 millio i late March, makig it Sa Fracisco s largest sigle-family home sale so far this year. That home sold i just 13 days ad for a whoppig 50 percet more tha its origial price. ART Searchig for the Pyramid of Cats More tha half a cetury after it was created, a eighborhood artist s drawig of cats is still i demad By Kay Roberts My house is full. I have too much art. I eed to dowsize. Ad so, ispired by Marie Kodo s bestseller, The Life-Chagig Magic of Tidyig Up, I bega to dig aroud dowstairs for art I could sell or doate. I was lookig for a old prit I kew was aroud somewhere, but istead I foud a woderful cat poster I did t recogize. Oe cat was piled o the back of aother, from a big lio o the bottom to a perky black house cat o the top. My husbad ad I are cat people, but we had o idea whe or how we had acquired the prit. Perhaps it was from his mother, a amateur artist who loved cats. Or maybe it came from a fried i the Presidio Brach Library o Sacrameto Street, where I worked i the 1970s. We obviously liked ad saved it, but it was ever framed ad has o piholes from beig hug o the wall of our so s room. What should I do with it? It was siged Mario Seawell, 1971. Eter the Iteret. I quickly foud out that Mario Seawell is a Califoria artist ad that the Thomas Reyolds Gallery o Fillmore Street shows her work. So I emailed the gallery: Are you iterested i this poster or ca you suggest how I might sell or doate it? I see the Sa Fracisco Fie Arts Museums ow a copy ad I am ot iterested i sellig o ebay. I received this prompt reply: Thaks for your message, which comes as a aswered prayer for someoe iquirig recetly about where to fid the Pyramid of Cats. I am copyig Diaa Dee o this message ad leave it to the two of you to work out arragemets. Mario Seawell will be pleased. I quickly heard from Diaa Dee, who wrote: I recetly cotacted Mr. Reyolds regardig Mario Seawell s cat pyramid prit, as I ve bee uable to locate oe. The prit was i my gradparets home whe I was a very youg child ad ow hags i my aut s home. I ve always loved it ad bee mesmerized by it. I m ot sure what you would prefer to do with your copy, but I m very iterested, obviously. I work at a oprofit metal health ceter ad I also do wildlife rehabilitatio (upaid). I hoestly ca t afford much, but I would still like to kow what you would be askig for it. Soo Diaa ad I became email pals, Mario Seawell s Pyramid of Cats This has certaily bee a lot of fu I the back parlor of a classic Victoria flat o Sacrameto Street, there lived for may years a puctilious bookkeeper by day who by ight was trasformed ito a Bohemia artist ad writer. With her right had she paited as Mario Seawell. With her left had she wrote as M.C. Wells. I both her right-haded paitigs ad her left-haded writigs, she spet a lifetime explorig the quirks ad cotradictios of her dual persoalities. That lifetime came to a ed o April 7, whe Mario Seawell died at age 88. While her paitigs are lush with rich color ad filled with stories ad symbolism, it was oe of her drawigs, Pyramid of Cats, from 1961, that became her best-kow work ad her biggest commercial success. Two good frieds who admired my drawig of a pyramid of cats suggested I go ito the poster busiess, she wrote i a book about her work, This Has Certaily Bee a Lot of Fu. Oe fiaced the productio; the other ad I split the cost of a small ad i The New Yorker. We immediately received 3,000 orders. The Sa Diego Zoo gift shop became a steady customer. Decades later, her Pyramid of Cats cotiues to be i demad. sharig what we kew about Mario Seawell s Pyramid of Cats. Diaa wrote that her aut purchased the poster whe she was i college ad the left it at her parets house. She remembers starig at the etire poster, but also lookig at the cats as idividuals. She wrote: Sometimes I d test myself by tryig to ame each species or remember their order. I was captivated by the detail i the drawig ad I m pretty sure that poster started my overall fasciatio with big cats ad aimals i geeral. My gradparets both passed away ad my aut reclaimed her poster at some poit. It s wor ad is ot framed. I m ot sure if it ever was. The poster ow hags i the beach house that has bee i my family for geeratios. A couple of summers ago, I texted Mario Seawell s ame to myself ad started lookig for a copy. I was usuccessful, ad had little hope of fidig it to begi with, for some reaso. This past summer, I did the same ad was t so quick to give up. O a whim, thikig I might ot receive a respose at all, I set Mr. Reyolds a message after fidig a coectio betwee the gallery ad Ms. Seawell. Now here we are, thaks to the thoughtfuless of both of you. I was touched by Diaa s story ad happy this eglected poster, which had ligered too log i my storage room, would have a good home. I told Diaa she could drop by ad I would be pleased to give it to her. Well! Remember the old cartoo about how obody kows you re a dog o the Iteret? I just assumed, sice the artist, her gallery ad I were i the Bay Area, that so was Diaa. Not so. Diaa lives i New Hampshire. So I wet lookig for a mailig tube, ad the oe I foud brought back memories of aother happy art story. We had kept a tube acquired years ago o a walkig trip i Frace. At the ed of our walk, we wadered ito a little art shop outside Chartres, attracted by some colorful prits. We dallied a log time ad fially chose oe, but the artist-shopkeeper had overheard that I really liked aother oe better. She said: I ever do this, but I really like you two, so I am givig you the secod oe. I love those prits eve more because of her geerosity. The tube we had packed ito my backpack to brig home so log ago was clearly waitig for aother art trip. Off it wet to New Hampshire, with Mario Seawell s Pyramid of Cats iside, to live with a woma who had bee ispired by it whe she was just a little girl ad loved it ever sice. Ad ow Diaa has recetly become a full-time iter for the wildlife orgaizatio where she voluteered. The Thomas Reyolds Gallery tells us its philosophy is that art is good for you ad ca improve your life. Through this experiece, I have discovered that art ca ot oly make life better it ca eve chage your life, as it did for Diaa. Ad I saw light that flows as a river, pourig its golde spledor betwee two baks paited with the wodrous colors of sprig.
