Resource for Teachers AM20530 - Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (VRQ) Command verbs Explanation of term Example - A brush Example of learners work Label Give the correct name to identify the person, item or activity. Handle Bristles Outline Give an overview of the main characteristics or key points. A brush is a tool; it has a handle and a block of bristles. It would be used to apply a liquid or a powder to a surface or for arranging hair. When moisturising the skin, it rehydrates the dry layers and make the skin feel softer and fresher Compare State the similarities and differences between the items. I have reviewed two different hair brushes. The first brush has a wooden handle and a soft head of bristles. The other brush I could use has a plastic handle with short, firm bristles. Both are good quality hair brushes; their handles are smooth and lightweight. Both are fit for purpose and would be used when blow-drying hair. The brushes are similarly priced; one costing 3.50 and the other 4. The biggest difference between the brushes is the head of bristles. The short, firm bristles are made of nylon and have a scratchy feel to them when brushing my hair. The soft bristles do not go easily through my thick hair so I have to allow more time and work harder to brush my hair. Define Explain the exact meaning of a word or phrase. A brush is an implement with a handle and a block of bristles, hair or wire, used especially for cleaning, applying a liquid or powder to a surface, or arranging the hair. Marketing is the action of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising. Marketing is important for customer satisfaction as it will help improve customer retention and it will also help create repeat business and attract new customers. This is important for business as it will help to gain more profit resulting in benefits to the economy. 2 Understanding verbs used in P/M/D grade descriptors

Describe Write about the subject giving detailed information, including relevant characteristics, qualities or events. A brush has a handle and a head of bristles. The length of the handle, size and type of head will vary according to the purpose of the brush. There are many different styles and uses for a brush. It is important to analyse briefs prior to developing design ideas because you are expecting to get all participants who are working on the project to have the same understanding of what is required. You also need to look at the skills that will be needed so you can allocate the participants to specific roles.e.g. hair stylists and beauticians. Another factor that should be considered are the resources available and the time scales. This is necessary so all participants can work as a team and produce their design brief professionally without any mistakes. The most important factor that should be considered are the client s needs, you need to make sure that you fulfil the clients need so the outcome is perfect. A good example of this would be a bridal party as you would have to consider the brides and the bridesmaid s views and create a perfect look for them all. Explain Provide details about the subject with reasons showing how or why. Brushes can be made in many different styles and use a variety of materials. The design and material choice are reflected in the cost of the brush. Materials can be synthetic or natural. The choice of the material would affect the durability and life span of the brush. I have chosen a wooden pastry brush; the handle is made from olive wood and it has natural brush fibres. I chose it because I felt that the quality of the brush was most important. I know that this brush is more expensive and that I will need to be careful when washing it however, despite these factors, I think that it is worth it. You need to know what you need to do to make sure you are doing something that is going to help the school show and you are going to be able to pass and complete whats being asked of you. You need to make shore that what you are doing is realistic in the time you ve got so you don t give yourself too many things to do and wont get them done in 4 weeks. It has to be realistic, if you say you want to go to London and visit a salon to talk to them your mum might not want you to go up there on your own so this wouldn t be realistic You are going to be given 4 weeks to go and create you project and have to make it work in that time. What you are going to need to do and things you will need. If you get stuck on anything then you should talk to your teacher about it and get support. Its important to use smart targets to break down what your going to do and know you will finish it in time without getting stressed. You need to make sure at the end of the time you have been able to do everything you want to do and if you plan it properly you should be able to. It is important to use a variety of sources to obtain your information because then you can get information from different sources to compare the information and makes it more interesting to find out and you can compare all of your information to see if its reliable. 3 Understanding Command Verbs verbs used in P/M/D grade descriptors

Identify Recognise, list or name the main points. The object on the table with a handle and bristles is a brush. My product is a nail varnish that when touches skin will evaporate, my new product meets customer needs as there s nothing like it out there List Make a list of key words, sentences or comments that focus on the subject. Handle Shape of head Bristles List of features Confident Innovative Enthusiastic Knowledgeable State Give the main points clearly in sentences. Express in precise terms. A brush is comprised of a handle and a head of bristles. Marketing is important, it has a positive effect on hair and beauty businesses because it can generate more money and a good reputation. Analyse Separate the subject into component parts and identify their characteristics. Show how the main ideas are related and important. Discuss the pros and cons of the topic and make a reasoned comment. Evaluate Assess something under discussion. Examine strengths and weaknesses, arguments for and against and/or similarities and differences. Use available knowledge, experience and evidence and make a valid conclusion or reasoned judgement. The long handled wooden brush that I have chosen to buy to use in the garden has a number of advantages over the plastic brush head with the thin metal handle. The brush is hardwearing and, due to the way it is constructed, I will be able to repair it or buy replacement parts. It has a thick wooden handle that is strong enough not to break if I tread on it accidentally. If I look after the brush it could last me a lifetime. The main weakness is the weight of the brush. It would mean that I would need to use more energy when using it to brush up the leaves in my garden. I will get achy muscles and so it will take me longer to complete the task. I would also need to wear gloves to avoid hurting my hands. Overall if I was to do this project again I would keep most of it the same as I was really pleased with it but to improve it I would add a section on men s hair and I would try and make more on my mood board like adding hair accessories and a men s section. I would definitely try to be better at keeping to my plan as it would have been less stressful at the end and not so rushed. I could have done step by step instructions on how to get men and women s hairstyles so this would have been good for the hairdressers doing the hair in the production but this would have probably taken a lot longer to do. I would also have liked to of found out a bit about make up but hair has taken me a long time so I don t think I would have been able to fit in both things. 4 Understanding verbs used in P/M/D grade descriptors

Justify Give an explanation for actions or decisions made. I have chosen to use a purple coloured silicone brush instead of a wooden handled natural fibre brush to apply egg wash to pastry. I prefer the bright colour of the silicone brush; it has a really modern feel to it. I like to use kitchen gadgets that are easy to look after and the silicone brush is dishwasher safe. The brown wooden brush does not match the colour theme for my kitchen. The wooden brush cannot go in the dishwasher and I do not like spending time washing up by hand. By getting down clearly in the business plan the resources required its going to enable you to direct different staff to there necessary job roles, its going to enable to you to buy the required materials and create feasible time frames and schedules and its also going to allow you to stay on track and keep organised. Present To demonstrate, show or make something known. I have tested four different brushes for applying make-up. The factors that led me to choose these brushes were price, type of bristles, material and length of handle. The cheapest brush had a lightweight plastic handle. The handle cracked in my bag during the first week that I took it to college every day. The wooden handled brushes were really solid but did not appear to be any heavier. The most expensive brush performed as well at applying make-up as the mid-price brushes. I could not see an obvious difference to justify the increased cost. I found that my best source of information was hairdresser s journal as it was really helpful and had some very interesting sections related to hair and beauty apprentices. Also the website was not bias, which made it more reliable. I think that the worst information source was daily mail. This was because I felt that the article was extremely bias and didn t give me any relevant information about apprentices to my research. I think that the last source, connexions northants, was a good website for apprentices but was limited with information compared to the first source. The softer, natural fibred brushes were easy to use. The eye shadow did not clog the brush and I could apply it to the eye-lid smoothly. The brush with the artificial fibre bristles got squashed in my make-up bag and I could not use it anymore as it was bent and I could not reshape it. This brush is poor value for money as I had to throw it away after one use. Overall, most of my sources helped with my research on apprentices. However, the Hairdressers Journal was the best due to the fact it is the most respected journal in the hairdressing world, because it is written by industry experts and this commands respect from hairdressers. The brushes had either a long handle or a short handle. The short handled brushes were better when applying eye shadow as you had more control over the direction of the brush head. The longer handled brushes were better for applying blusher as they allowed me to have a bigger sweep of the brush when putting it on. The brush that I found to be the most useful and offer the best value for money was the short wooden handled brush. It was mid-priced and I was able to use it to apply a number of different products. 5 Understanding Command Verbs verbs used in P/M/D grade descriptors

Review Look back over the subject: information, methods, outcomes, conclusions and decide what was effective or not. I researched the different types of brushes for applying colour to hair that are available to purchase from my local wholesaler. I was able to select the best one for me using a number of different factors, which I will discuss in turn; there were pros and cons to each type of brush. My conclusion is that from the research I ve done and the outcome from my interview I can see that the 1980 s have had a big influence on present day but things have changed a little bit. I also found that the advantages and disadvantages depended on age range. The ColourBox brushes with 1 inch, flexible bristles were the best at applying colour to the roots and preventing overlap. The ColourBox brushes were mid-priced and were available to purchase both individually and in multipacks. This meant that I saved 20% by not buying them separately. The wholesaler has a number of brushes for sale that have coloured handles. These are more expensive than the standard black handled brushes. From my research, I have found that the benefit of this would be to colour match the brushes to the salon or to identify different people or tasks. I chose not to purchase the red handled brushes that would match the colour of my towels in my salon. I did not feel that I would benefit from the additional cost and that as I have a fixed budget to equip my salon it would not be an effective use of money. My primary research was me interviewing my mum. This extended my knowledge further. The information I gathered from conducting my interview on what the hairstyles were like then in comparison to todays style. Most of my information was from different websites on the internet and this is the secondary research. To make sure my information was valid I searched the websites repeatedly. I got most of my information from the website @hair.lovetoknow.com. In my opinion I feel like getting primary research would help people more because you know its defiantly true but the internet gives more options to chose from. I am pleased with the information and I feel that I have met the expected outcome. I have gathered lots of valid information from reputable websites and it has extended my knowledge. I think I could ve improved it by interviewing more people and doing a survey with open questions to collect even more information. 6 Understanding verbs used in P/M/D grade descriptors
