WELCOME! Welcome to our 8th Annual Meat and Guts Performance Genetics Sale here at the ranch in Gardnerville, Nevada! The cattle market continues to be positive. Cattle numbers continue to be low. Corn has come down from its record high. I continue to hold a positive outlook on the weather, believing it will rain or snow soon. We have not changed our format of selling the bulls on the video screen in the comfort of the sale barn. John Dickinson and Jake Parnell will be with us again. John and Jake bring a full service of management, specializing in purebred and commercial livestock marketing. The bulls will be available for viewing on Saturday afternoon, February 15th, the day before the sale. You are invited to stay for dinner at the sale barn on Saturday evening. We will have dinner and a guest speaker for our sale customers. Please come and join us! These bulls go out into a variety of environments, from California to eastern Oregon, northern Nevada and Idaho. Comments are that the cows calve easy and the calves weigh heavy. We continue to focus on the feet and leg structure of our bulls and cows. We also demand that our cattle have a good disposition and are moderate framed, heavy muscled and deep ribbed (i.e., Meat and Guts ). But most importantly, we want a bull that will sire offspring that will be profitable for you, the customer. Snyder Livestock, Yerington, Nevada, with Lucy Rechel in charge, has developed the bulls for this sale. The bulls leave in September as boys and return as men in February, ready to go out and work for you. Lucy does an excellent job of preparing the bulls for our sale. Dr. Randy Wallstrum administered the breeding soundness requirements of the bulls. We also ultrasound our bulls to measure for ribeye, marbling and backfat. We want to provide you enough information to make sound decisions on your purchases. We feel that these bulls should add value to your program. I have now leased the Sunken Canyon cow herd, and owner Joe Gellings will be on hand sale weekend. These cows have been Joe s life for the last 20 years. Strong genetics and good dispositions are common of the Sunken Canyon cow herd. Hunsaker Livestock will be a guest consignor again this year. Stop by and visit with these cattlemen on sale day in the pens. Remember to come Saturday, February 15th and view the bulls. Stay for dinner and visit with fellow cattlemen. Terms of the sale are cash, cashier s check or personal check, payable during or immediately following the sale. Bulls will not be released until after settlement has been made. Herd Health All bulls will be accompanied by proper certification for immediate interstate shipment. Bulls are negative for BVD PI and have been vaccinated for anaplasmosis. Herd veterinarian is Randy Wallstrum, D.V.M. Breeding Guarantee Bulls will be semen checked with a passing grade and are guaranteed breeders. Guarantee is limited to purchase price. We reserve the right to have our veterinarian re-examine any bull examined by a purchaser s vet and claimed to be a non-breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from a bull will freeze. All bulls sell with a one-year unconditional guarantee. Yearling weights and ultrasound will be available sale day on the sale supplement. Trucking We will be glad to assist you in making the best possible trucking arrangements. We are offering free delivery to a central location up to 500 miles. Volume Discount Persons buying four or more bulls will receive a $100 discount off the total purchase price. Registration Certificates Bulls will be transferred through the respective breed association to the buyer at the seller s expense. Each buyer must be sure to give the sale clerk the proper name and address for making transfers. An updated certificate of registration will be mailed to the new owner at a later date. About EPDs The available Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) numbers are included in the catalog and were current as of 1/21/14, as reported by the individual s association of registry. EPD is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform in each of the traits listed, relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the breed database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Performance records allow you to compare individuals of the same herd; EPDs allow you to compare individuals within a breed. EPDs do not allow you to compare individuals of different breeds. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Breed average EPDs for 2012-born Salers calves: BW +1.6, WW +41, YW +79, MILK +20, MWW +40 Breed average EPDs for non-parent Angus bulls: CED +5, BW +1.8, WW +47, YW +83, MILK +24, $W +30.10, $B +69.56 Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW) (pounds) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use on heifers. Weaning Weight (WW) (pounds) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 120 and 280 days of age. Values are adjusted to 205 days and for age of dam. This EPD is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth to early ages. Yearling Weight (YW) (pounds) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 320 and 440 days of age, adjusted to 365 days and for age of dam. This EPD is the best single estimate of a sire s genetic merit for yearling weight. Milk (pounds) is an estimate of an animal s milking ability. This past September I was fortunate to be invited to help the neighboring ranch gather their cattle from their summer range in the Sweetwater Mountains. The trip was an experience that I will never forget and one that I truly enjoyed. We rode into camp horseback, leading our extra horses behind us. The base camp was set up at 8,000 feet elevation, where we stayed in a cabin tent. We rode out each morning to different areas of the range to gather cows and push them down to the lower elevation. Why Salers? Why Angus? Why Not? BALANCED BUSINESS Ward Ranches purchased its first Salers bull at the Western Spotlight Salers Sale in Galt, California, some 28 years ago. We had an Angus-based commercial cow herd, and Salers were new to the industry at the time. We tried them because of the calving ease and the marbling quality. We started with 25 to 30 virgin Angus heifers that we bred to this Salers bull, making the calves 50% Salers/ 50% Angus. The following fall when we calved these heifers, we were surprised at the calving ease and the vigor in these calves. We were immediately sold on the two breeds being compatible with each other. The Angus and Salers offered both the maternal and carcass qualities that we were interested in. As we started to put together a purebred operation, we knew the qualities we had wanted in our commercial cattle operation, and we worked toward producing bulls that would work for the commercial cattleman. We have tried for generations now to build a cow herd that will produce bulls that pass on the traits that lead to profitability for you, the rancher. We want to create moderate-framed individuals that are easy fleshing and carry a lot of extra rib (i.e., guts). They need to have the ability to process the grass and convert it into pounds of flesh. Another goal was to produce cattle that will have optimal feed conversion in the feedlot. Our philosophy is like that of a supermarket. We need to produce a quality product to put on the auction block for the you, the shopper. We know that the Angus breed is known as the Business Breed and that the Salers breed is known as the Balanced Breed. Research has shown that both breeds demonstrate the traits for calving ease, maternal ability, weight gain, feedlot performance and carcass merit. These two breeds, Angus and Salers, complement each other. This sale offers you purebred Angus bulls, purebred Salers bulls and composite Angus/Salers bulls whichever fits your individual program or preference. WHAT IS AN OPTIMIZER? The American Salers Association Optimizer Registry is a specific extension of the ASA Composite Registry Program. Optimizers offer commercial cattlemen a way to manage percent blood in their cow herds through the use of documented, seedstock quality composites, complete with EPDs.
