NOTE @khanyidhlomo @KhanyiDhlomo TALK TO ME and overwhelming beauty. In order to do this, it must be in peak condition. A piano with chipped ivory, tarnished ebony and fraying felt isn t capable of producing the glorious tone and delicacy needed for a Mozart concerto: the music sounds flat or distorted. A double bass that s been exposed to draughts and left We invite you to celebrate your body, as the sacred temple of your mind and soul, and take joy in clothing it, experiencing it, communing with it and allowing it to be the manifestation of all that you are within With the festive season almost here, there s a palpable sense of excitement in the air: most people are already preparing for their end-of-year break, doing gift shopping, planning celebratory meals and anticipating the bliss of a richly deserved break. And with summer ushering in the season of beaches, pools, minimal clothing and exposed physiques, our awareness of our bodies is heightened. In this issue, we focus on the ways our physical selves serve us and how best we can serve them. Anyone who s ever examined a musical instrument at close quarters will know that when it s not in use, it s a mute, often bizarre-looking object: a saxophone resembles a mass of cold piping; a guitar looks like an ordinary piece of wood with a few strings secured over it. Yet the minute a musician begins playing an instrument, it comes to life, expressing magic, passion untuned for weeks has strings so devoid of tautness that they can t emit the deep richness needed for a jazz fantasia. The same applies to our bodies. The system of bones, flesh, sinews, organs, limbs and nerves that houses the soul is an endlessly magnificent vehicle, provided it s cared for, respected and regularly maintained. Ballerina Misty Copeland, who s featured in our cover story this month, is a wonderful example of how a scrupulously maintained body expresses grace, strength and stunning litheness, capable of delighting fellow souls. Athletes know this too. Our fashion pages this month also pay homage to our bodies: garments designed to expose, conceal, flatter and transform our frames offer endless imaginative possibilities. We invite you to celebrate your body, as the sacred temple of your mind and soul, and take joy in clothing it, experiencing it, communing with it and allowing it to be the manifestation of all that you are within. & BEAUTY DIRECTOR S NOTE A dress that seems conservative in length. Layer over a simple top in more conservative spaces, and show some skin in the night. Dress, R629, H&M The cold shoulder is all about showing a hint of skin. The detail gives a denim jacket a modern update. Jacket, R829, Zara When you want to be discreet with an open neckline, or simply want to create a focal point upwards, add a high-impact piece of jewellery. Necklace, R250, Colette Hayman A wide belt gives hip-length pieces a nipped silhouette. A belt (or corset if that s your preference) does wonders to accentuate your assets. It s the easiest way to get an hourglass shape. I love a wide leather belt. This one is so 80s, it makes me want to bring out my acid-wash denims and a power shoulder jacket, stat. Belt, R399, Aldo Accessories asandasizani @AsandaSizani A HINT OF SKIN Wear bedazzled heels for added height and polish. Stilettos will forever be the sexy heel style. A ladylike, but more demure option is the block heel, which thanks to its smaller heel you can wear with a shorter hemline, revealing more leg. R749, Charles & Keith By ASANDA SIZANI As this is our #BodyIssue, I m taking editorial inspiration from the way flashes of skin were masterfully displayed on runway collection items, with high slits, deep plunging necklines, peek-a-boo and cut-out pieces. Bra tops were layered over conservative button-up shirts at Prada and high-slit skirts were paired with oversized sporty tees at Kenzo. There were hints, not full-on displays of skin. Knowing how to wear skinbaring pieces without being too risqué is an art subtlety being key. Here are some of my favourite picks to consider pairing with what you already have in your wardrobe to get the look. PHOTOGRAPHY: ZANDER OPPERMAN AT LAMPOST ELLE.CO.ZA / @ELLESOUTHAFRICA 20
