!3 ABOUT ZIKOAFRIKA ZikoAfrika, loosely translated as Africa has it, is a Kenya-based fashion accessories brand, founded in February 2014 by British-Kenyan sisters Sisi and El. The brand is inspired by the sisters dual-heritage and explores the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with dynamic, modern design in Africa. THE ARROW NECKLACE Inspired by the peak motifs often seen in Malian mud cloth material, these hammered brass arrows are linked together to form a light but striking statement necklace.
!4 SISI AND EL As sisters of a Kenyan mother and British father, we had the amazing experience of growing up with exposure to two very different environments, which had a big influence on our developing a brand that reflects duality in form and aesthetic. We both studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, before working in development. Our experiences in the development field underscored the importance of effecting lasting change through business opportunity. This background, together with a love of fashion and design, led to the founding of ZikoAfrika.
!5 OUR PRODUCERS Our products are made using a mixture of traditional techniques, such as sand casting and thread-beading, and new/enhanced production methods that improve efficiency, quality standards, and safety. Fair production is central to our brand ethos, so we only work with producers who pay their employees a living wage. We have spent over two years establishing relationships with workshops in Nairobi and Mombasa that provide valuable employment and training opportunities under strict Fairtrade guidelines. Mary Head of Product Development at Bombolulu Workshop, Mombasa.

The fashion industry is one example of a market that values originality and exclusivity, providing consumer driven development options that allow countries to build on their rich cultural heritage. In working to raise the profile of fashion and design from Kenya both locally and internationally, ZikoAfrika seeks to contribute to the growing movement of African designers highlighting the role creative industries can play in generating significant socio-economic growth across the continent.
