Premier designer of Artistic Decorative Hardware TM for your home The Artist Michael Healy was born and raised on the Cape Cod seashore. Though New England has always been his home base, by the age of ten his father s Air Force career had carried Michael halfway around the globe, exposing him to a variety of cultures which fueled a desire to express himself artistically. At the University of Notre Dame Michael studied metal sculpture and developed a passion for design. After a tour of duty in the Air Force, his marriage and the birth of his four children, Michael chose to use his knowledge and interest in metalwork to open his own foundry on the banks of the Blackstone River in Rhode Island. I have always enjoyed the challenge of creating an artistic design and working out how best to craft it. Michael worked casting architectural bronze and restoring historic statues throughout New England before shifting focus to his own original artwork. Combining his knowledge of the foundry sand casting process and his own desire to create highly functional forms of art, Michael was inspired to develop his famous line of unique door knockers and doorbell ringers. Thus started his venture making artistic decorative hardware for your home. First, something catches my eye the complexity of a pinecone or the grace of a dragonfly s wings then I try to capture that image in metal. How I create my doorbell Ringers... All of my doorbell ringers are hand crafted using the age old art of sand casting. My Doorbell Ringers are a unique adaptation of the long neglected doorbell. They were designed to provide an exquisite alternative to a lone button or a decorative back plate. A multitude of choices enable you to showcase your personality. I wanted to create Doorbells with the sculptured beauty of my Door Knockers for those people who wanted to compliment their existing Michael Healy Door Knocker or who just wanted to welcome their guests in style. Concept to Form It starts with a sketch which is then sculpted into a three-dimensional model. The Process The Art of Sand Casting Impressions of the model are made in fine sand into which 2300 o metal is poured. Each mold can be used only once making each piece truly unique. Raw Casting to Polish After the metal cools, the sand is broken away and the raw metal castings emerge. Through multiple phases of grinding and polishing, accents and highlights are added to each piece. Lasting Protection Each doorbell ringer receives a baked polyurethane finish similar to the clear coat finish on your car to provide years of protection. High Polished Elegance... Unique Doorbell Ringers tm Brass and Bronze are copperbased alloys. The yellow brass alloy used in many of Michael s designs contains 70% copper and produces a warm, traditional brass look. Red bronze contains almost 85% copper. This additional copper content gives the bronze alloy its rich, reddish undertone. The mirrored finish of polished brass and polished bronze is achieved through varying degrees of sanding and buffing. Burks ~ Greenville, VA INSTRUCTIONS 21 Mounting Instructions Your Michael Healy doorbell ringer is designed to quickly and easily replace your existing doorbell. 1. 2. 3. 4. 1. Turn off the power to your existing doorbell. Remove your current doorbell button and disconnect the two wires. 2. Using the supplied screw, attach your new mounting bracket to the doorjamb pulling the wires through the large buttonhole in the mounting bracket. (Note: Some designs require the removal of the body of the doorbell ringer from the mounting bracket before the bracket can be attached to the wall. The body is attached to the mounting bracket with a single screw.) 3. Attach one wire to each terminal on the new doorbell button and push the button into the mounting bracket. (Note: It does not matter which wire is attached to which terminal) 4. If required, reattach the body of the doorbell to the mounting bracket and return power to the doorbell. Frequently Asked Questions Does my doorbell ringer require special care? We coat each doorbell ringer with a clear, catalyzed polyurethane. This protective finish is similar to the clear top coat on an automobile. Washing of your doorbell ringer with a mild soap and water will help to maintain its vibrant shine. Occasionally coating the doorbell ringer with car wax will greatly extend the life of the original finish. Do not use a brass cleaner or an abrasive pad as these will damage the clear coating and the original polished finish. I live near the beach. Will one finish last longer than the others? All Michael Healy Doorbell Ringers receive the same protective coating. If properly cared for, there will be little difference in the durability of the various finishes. What can I do if my doorbell ringer tarnishes? Even though Michael Healy Doorbell Ringers are coated with a clear catalyzed, polyurethane finish, copper alloys will patina with time. Age and the environment may change the appearance of your doorbell ringer. While some prefer this natural aging process, our refinishing program gives you the option of restoring your doorbell ringer to look like new.
