You will develop the ability to identify the appropriate product, technique and corrective action to satisfy your client s needs. Part of this service is to provide your client with good aftercare advice. This unit is suitable for both hairdressers and barbers. _v5

Provide colour correction services Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Be able to maintain safe and effective methods of working when correcting hair colour problems 2. Understand how to use colouring techniques when correcting colouring Evidence requirements 1. Simulation is not allowed for any performance evidence within this unit. 2. You must practically demonstrate in your everyday work that you have met the standard for colouring hair using a variety of techniques. 3. Your assessor will observe these aspects of your performance on at least 4 occasions. The evidence for this unit may be generated from work carried out on men and/or women. 4. From the range, you must show that you have: used 4 out of the 5 types of products* carried out all the types of colour correction questioned clients on all the areas of contra-indication carried out all tests considered all the factors given all the advice. * However, you must prove to your assessor that you have the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to perform competently in respect of all the items in this range. 5. It is likely most evidence of your performance will be gathered from the observations made by your assessor but you may be required to produce other evidence to support your performance if your assessor has not been present. 6. Knowledge and understanding in this unit will be assessed by an external paper. The criteria that make up this paper are highlighted in white throughout this unit. There is one external paper that must be achieved. 3

Achieving observations and range Achieving observation outcomes Your assessor will observe your performance of practical tasks. The minimum number of observations required is indicated in the evidence requirements section of this unit. Maximum service times There are no maximum service times that apply to this unit. Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Your assessor will document the criteria that have been achieved through oral questioning. Your assessor will sign off an outcome when all criteria have been competently achieved in a single client service. Achieving range The range section indicates what must be covered. Ranges must be practically demonstrated as part of an observation. Your assessor will document the portfolio reference once a range has been competently achieved. 4

Wear personal protective equipment when using products c. Keep the work area clean and tidy throughout the service d. Remove waste immediately at the end of the service e. Ensure working methods are followed that: - minimise the risk of damage to tools and equipment - minimise the risk of cross-infection - make effective use of the working time - ensure the use of clean resources - minimise harm or injury to yourself and others - minimise the wastage of products f. Maintain personal standards of health and hygiene to minimise the risk of cross infection, infestation and offence to clients and colleagues g. Use tools and equipment that are safe and fit for purpose h. Take suitable action to ensure the necessary products and materials are available in time for the service i. Give clear and accurate instructions to anyone assisting you with the service, when necessary * j. Complete client records so that they are accurate, easy to read and up to date k. Outcome 2 Be able to determine the colour problem a. Use the correct methods to accurately establish: - the nature and extent of the colouring problem - the condition of the client s hair, skin and scalp - the extent of artificial colour and natural colour on the client s head - the most suitable colour correction techniques b. Identify from the client s previous records, when available, their hair colouring and/or lightening history and how this may affect the colour correction service c. Ask the client appropriate questions to identify if they have any contra-indications to the colour correction service d. Ask the client appropriate questions to gather information on their colouring and/ or lightening problems and the result they would like to see e. Record the client s responses to questioning f. Conduct tests on the client s hair and skin following manufacturers instructions and recognised industry procedures g. Take a suitable course of action when contra-indications and/or reactions to tests cause doubts as to the suitability of the service for the client* h. Record the outcomes of tests on the client s record i. Identify the available service options and products for resolving the client s colouring and/or lightening problem(s) based on the results of questioning and analysis *May be assessed through oral questioning. Choose products, tools and equipment based on the results of necessary tests, consultation with the client and relevant influencing factors c. Prepare products to meet the manufacturers instructions d. Apply the type and quantity of product to meet the requirements of the analysis and the required result e. Use application techniques that minimise the risk of colour being spread to the client s skin, clothes and surrounding areas f. Frequently monitor the development of the product, taking strand and elasticity tests as required g. Modify the planned course of action to resolve any unforeseen problems, when necessary* h. Developing knowledge Achieving knowledge outcomes You will be guided by your tutor and assessor on the evidence that needs to be produced. A pass mark of 70% must be achieved. Criteria not achieved will be identified to your tutor/assessor.
