News Member of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology since 1929 September 2009 www.chicagocoatings.org Volume 13, Issue 3 MONDAY OCTOBER 5, 2009 Easy Dispersing Pigments for Industrial Coatings Dr. Romesh Kumar, CLARIANT Doubletree, Alsip IL D ispersing pigments is one of the most challenging part of paint manufacturing. Once the pigments are selected (based on chemistry, particle size etc) 5:00 Registration / Cocktails for a specific application, development of optimum mill base takes time 5:45 Speaker (trial and error) to arrive at a stable, and consistent quality paint. Easy dispersing 6:45 Dinner & Meeting pigments (ED types) make it easy for a paint chemist to develop optimum mill bases to be used in durable paints. These pigments can be dispersed on a high speed $30 members with reservations mixer with minimum shear, and paint color and performance are not affected by otherwise aggressive milling process with regular media mills. There is significant $35 non-members and walk-ins decrease in haze, and improvement in gloss & some of the very desirable features of CHEMISTS FREE!!! (see p. 2) high performance coatings. In addition, the paint manufacturing out put is highly increased. R. ROMESH KUMAR is Technical Manager in the Pigments & Additives Business Unit of Clariant Corporation. He D specializes in pigments and additives for coatings, color-instrumentation and other aspects of pigment applications. Dr. Kumar attended Laurentian University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he obtained his Doctorate in Color Science. He is a member of the Inter Society Color Council, and Federation of Societies of Coatings Technology and has made several presentations on pigments and additives, both nationally and internationally, during his 29 years in the coatings business. How Carbon Black Properties Influence Electrical Conductivity of Coatings John R. Chatten, COLUMBIAN W e face the challenge of formulating and producing coatings to meet the needs of a broad range coating applications. For those applications that include special electrical requirements we must consider the influence of the various components and production techniques that can be used on the conductivity of the finished coating. This presentation will focus on the relationships of carbon black properties to electrical performance. Selecting the appropriate carbon black for your conductive application and optimizing your formulation will be discussed. OHN R. CHATTEN is the Manager of Technical Service for Industrial Carbon Blacks at Columbian Chemicals. He is responsible for meeting the technical needs of customers, the development and implementation of action plans to achieve indus- J trial carbon black product approvals in the coatings, inks and plastics market segments. He serves as a technical interface with customers, the leader of a Technical Inquiry Response Team and is responsible for literature development. For more than 42 years since attending Newark College of Engineering, John has been involved in developing carbon blacks to meet the coloristic, rheological, electrical and other performance requirements in end use applications. He is living proof that carbon black will wash out of your hair. E-mail your Technical Dinner Reservation to: kderose@spherotech.com or sign up online at www.chicagocoatings.org
