65 Crystalised art Emirati designer Zeinab Al Hashemi dazzles Dubai with her outdoor installation, Hexalite, commissioned by Swarovski. TEXT: JOANNE MOLINA photographyl: hyku DEsEsTO Dubai Design Week was radiant this year thanks to Emirati artist Zeinab Al Hashemi. Sponsored by Swarovski, her kaleidoscopic Hexalite installation in the Dubai Design District hypnotised crowds, who also revelled in the international luxury brand s latest home collection. Al Hashemi kindly took the time to speak with id about her inspirations, process and secrets to success. What is your artistic style and philosophy? I would describe myself as a contemporary conceptual artist. I look at the beauty of everyday objects. For example, I worked with fish-trap makers in the Jumeirah area. There were many challenges related to our differences in language and age but it was a fascinating experience. I also worked with traditional rope-makers, who use dry palm leaves. My work revolves around space and time, and as an outcome I use sacred geometry forms and shapes. I want the pieces to be timeless concepts taken from the past but portrayed in a futuristic way. Can you describe your process? I always loved the kaleidoscope and the mirror effect where everything you see becomes a pattern. My Urban Phantasmagoria series, the love for this effect, sacred geometry and the Swarovski crystals were all crucial elements. I realised how beautiful crystals are, and also how well they work as a design solution. What were the challenges? One of the challenges was that the piece was manufactured in London. It was my first time working on an art piece from a long distance. I was working very closely with the team via photos, videos and conference calls. How did the site influence your idea and your process? The space affected the colour of the art installation and the crystals. It also inspired the scale of it as the new Design District public area can be overwhelming. We had to keep in mind the scale. The whole installation has so many reflections that it confuses the audience; reality turns into an illusion. At some point, you are lost in time, lost in space. How does the installation reflect Emirati life? My idea was to remove the concept of time. You experience the installation in the present, while looking ahead to the future with some memories from the past. If you look through the kaleidoscope, you will see Burj Khalifa, Dubai Design District, the city of Dubai and its skyline This project has taught me so much and has transformed my work as an artist and as a designer. Can you describe the importance of the Swarovski crystals? I was really impressed with the huge collection of crystals. The ones used in this installation were selected for their precision cut and unique Aurora Borealis-blue effect, which creates a shimmering rainbow mirage that s then reflected throughout the mirror-polished stainless steel structure. Is there a message that you would like viewers to receive? I would like viewers to experience it in different ways: from a distance, or close, alone, or with another person opposite them. The blue Aurora-Borealis effect in the crystal creates magic in the atmosphere. There are no instructions; I want to allow imagination and freedom. What s next? There are a lot of exciting projects ahead: More collaborations with a well-known brand for National Day; an exhibition in Abu Dhabi Art 2016; and a commission by a museum that that will be announced early next year.
