THE MCMANUS: DUNDEE S ART GALLERY & MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS DRAW THE LINE: OLD MASTERS TO THE BEANO Continuing until Sun 23 Oct Drawing is one of the most basic and enduring of human activities. It remains one of the simplest and most effective forms of communication requiring only a pencil and paper, stick and sand or crayon and wall. It is little wonder then that drawing includes such a vast and all encompassing range of creativity. This display features figure studies and portraiture, illustration, preparatory sketches, landscape and topography by historic and contemporary artists including Augustus John, Graeme Sutherland, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Will Maclean, Thomas Gainsborough, Amelia Long, William Gillies and Ian Fleming. REFLECTIONS ON CELTS A SPOTLIGHT TOUR FROM NATIONAL MUSEUMS SCOTLAND AND THE BRITISH MUSEUM Thur 1 Sept - Mon 5 Dec The two mirrors on display The British Museum s Holcombe mirror and National Museums Scotland s Balmaclellan mirror tell very different stories, and help us to understand the relationships between communities in Britain 2,000 years ago. Accompanying the Spotlight Tour will be an exhibition of objects from The McManus own collections exploring life in the Iron Age locally, with a special focus on Dundee Law. The major joint exhibition telling the story of Celts was at The British Museum until 31 January 2016 and is at the National Museum of Scotland from 10 March 25 September 2016. COLLECTIONS HIGHLIGHTS Gain a fascinating insight into the work of the Museum from the curatorial and conservation teams that care for our diverse collections of objects and artworks. YE JACOBITES BY NAME Sat 16 Apr, 10.30am The McManus has some amazing and ultra-rare objects on display from the 1745 Jacobite Uprising. On the 270th anniversary of the Battle of Culloden, this gallery talk looks at how these Jacobite objects are cared for and conserved, as well as their historical significance. DUNDEE ARTS CAFÉ A great opportunity to hear about and discuss the latest research in the Arts from History to English, Education to Social Studies and Fine Art to Product Design. BROUGHTY TALES If Broughty Castle could talk, what tales it could tell! Join our informal guided tours that explore the historic building and Museum displays. BROUGHTY CASTLE MUSEUM THE OLD STEEPLE 2016 THE DEFENCE OF THE TAY Sat 21 May, 2-3pm Tour around the grounds and ramparts to look at the defences of the Castle as they would have been in 1860, and then explore how these were upgraded later that century to meet the demands of modern warfare. UNDER SIEGE Sat 18 June, 2-3pm This historic monument has seen more than its share of bloody sieges over the centuries. We look at how the Castle withstood a three-year long siege in the mid-sixteenth century, and the artillery bombardment by General Monck s army in 1651 that left battle scars still visible today! VICTORIAN VOLUNTEERS Sat 16 July, 2-3pm Discover how the Castle was restored and rebuilt as a working fortress in 1860, and the lives of the Victorian Volunteers who garrisoned it. BROUGHTY S SUBMARINE MINERS Sat 20 Aug, 2-3pm Intriguingly, the Submarine Miners based at the Castle in 1889 had nothing to do with either Submarines or digging coal! Learn more about these Victorian military volunteers, and how their particular maritime specialism changed the Castle and its surroundings. AROUND THE GALLERIES Sat 10 Sept, 2-3pm Celebrate Broughty Ferry s local history, take a peek in the wildlife gallery, admire paintings from the Orchar art collection and learn about the building s military past in this fascinating tour of the Castle and its displays. CHILDREN & FAMILIES TAY WILDLIFE WATCHING Sat 2 July, 11am-3pm Discover the summertime wildlife of the Tay Estuary as viewed from the amazing historic Broughty Castle and see what birds and marine wildlife you can find! In association with RSPB Scotland. BROUGHTY FERRY THROUGHOUT THE YEARS Sat 9 July, 1-3pm Explore Broughty Ferry as a popular seaside destination in the Victorian period through early photographs, postcards and objects. This Summer s programme of public access to one of Dundee s unique historical buildings is not to be missed! Drop into the ground floor on viewing days to see the fascinating collection of Medieval Gravestones or discover the history of the building by pre-booking an informative guided tour of The Steeple itself. One of them, the Strathmore meteorite, landed to the north of Dundee in 1917 and can now be seen on display at the Observatory. Join our Natural History Curator to find out what the meteorite is made of, how old it is and what happened when it landed.
