Skills needed include: working with stiff or firm fabrics; joining fabric along curved edges. SUGGESTED CUTTING LAYOUT FOR THE FULL SIZED HAT fold fabric/interfacing in half, with selvedge to selvedge for this layout FABRIC & NOTIONS REQUIRED You'll need around 1yard/ 90 cm of fabric & interfacing for the hat, or 1/2 yard/45cm fabric & interfacing for the fascinator. ABOUT THIS STYLE These hats can be either a full scale hat, or a mini version worn as a fascinator. Both versions have a 'crumpled' crown. Please make sure that your fabric is stiff, or if not, be sure to use a VERY crisp or stiff fusible or sew-in interfacing. Don't bother to make a muslin for this one, but do pin all the pattern pieces together first and try it on,so you can check it for dimensions and construction. SUGGESTED CUTTING LAYOUT FOR THE FASCINATOR fold fabric/interfacing in half, with selvedge to selvedge for this layout You'll also need about 1 yard/92cm of 1" or 2.5cm wide grosgrain ribbon for the hat. For the fascinator, you'll also need a comb or fabric covered hairband. For either version, you may wish to grab a small handful of batting, to stuff the point of the crown! All fabric requirements are for 60" / 150 cm wide fabric. 1 Start by applying interfacing to the crown & brim pieces. 2 Join the brim pieces at the outer edges....yes, this is very wasteful......so why not make two,and give one to a friend? + = Clip the seam allowances, press them open and turn out. Understitch along the brim edge if you wish; press the brim edges flat. 3 Join the front & back crown pieces along the side seams. Clip the seam allowances, press the seams open & turn out. You may need to "encourage' the point on the hat with a sharp stick, skewer or similar... be careful! 4 Matching the center front & back and the sides,join the brim to the crown. Clip the seam allownces,press open, then press upwards inside the hat. = + + = To complete the hat, hand-stitch the grosgrain ribbon around the 5a inside of the brim/crown seam. To complete the fascinator, hand-stitch the base of the brim to the 5b comb or fabric-covered hairband. You may also wish to stuff the point with a handful of batting...this helps it retain its' shape. Spooky fabulousness!
