International Hair Studio Program About the Program The Blanche Macdonald Centre has created the International Hair Studio program, a Full-time six month program that allows International students to develop professional skills in Hair Design: Hair Cutting and Hair Styling. International students have the unique opportunity to develop their creative and artistic talents, study in beautiful Vancouver and earn a highly valued Canadian Diploma. Students will gain Canadian work experience with industry salon internships, create photo shoots for Hair for weddings, fashion editorial and avant-garde looks and showcase their extensive gallery of Haircuts and Hair styles with a graduation presentation of their own e-portfolio.

The Blanche Macdonald Centre is committed to providing a complete English immersion experience. All instruction is delivered in English, with translation teaching tools available. International students with Intermediate to Advanced English skills are welcome to apply for this program. To assist our International students in developing solid English skills and becoming comfortable with North American culture, customs and business practices, this speaking English only policy has proven to be a success. The Uptown Campus at City Square is approximately 30,000 square feet and is situated in an award-winning, architecturally spectacular mall at City Square. Program techniques and skill development: All of our International Hair classes are delivered through the use of Pivot Point International, recognized throughout the world as a leading teaching method for Professional Hairstyling. The Pivot Point classroom instruction is supplemented by an accompanying Pivot Point textbook and extensive video tape teaching guides which can be viewed in six different languages: Spanish, Chinese, Korean, French, German and Italian. BMC International Hair Studio Program Overview Program Description This program will provide the International student with all the skills necessary to successfully meet the BMC examination requirements and to work as a professional Hair stylist in cutting and styling. Schedule Total Program Hours = 480 Hours Theoretical and Practical studies of 20 hours per week International Hair Studio Level One Cutting and Styling = 200 hours Understanding how to professionally dress and conduct oneself in a professional salon. Learning how to perform a full client consultation. Mastering the proper, professional use of all equipment, tools and materials used in Cosmetology, such as Kashio, Dannyco, BaByliss, L Oreal & Lakme. Learning the basics of Facial Structure, Design Theory and Implementation correctly. Understanding the theory and execution of four basic cutting techniques and their assorted combinations. Providing the student with the knowledge and skill to create 14 different basic haircuts through the delivery of PIVOT POINT INTERNATIONAL cutting systems. This is considered to be the Scientific approach to hair, which can be delivered in six different languages. There is also a toolkit of style elements that will allow students to accurately replicate any style they see. Knowing the proper techniques and theories involved in shampooing, client draping, Trichology, bacteriology, sanitation, wet styling and thermal styling. Mastering the blow drying and styling techniques for the salon, competition and runway work. Using the fully equipped and professional salon to practice what they have learned in class. Creating and designing their own cutting styles and structures. Developing the start of their professional portfolio. Designing a full cut and style for their first professional photo shoot. International Hair Studio Level Two Industry Professional Preparation = 40 hours Understanding industry history and how the industry has developed and evolved Learning about Hairstyles through the ages, (Period Hair) and how it relates to today s styles. Understanding the category of hair design. Bridal Brides and wedding party looks Evening wear Elegant formal looks Editorial, daytime consumer (highly polished today s salon look) prep for photo shoot Avant Garde wearable art, the future of hairstyles as seen by the stylist Fantasy- Character development TV/ Film Competitions and platform work Booking and working with your models for a total look in each category. Working with a creative team on set: the fashion photographer, models, fashion stylist and make-up artist; the role of the Hairstylist on a creative shoot. International Hair Studio Level Three Design Forum Photo shoot = 120 hours Performing salon cutting and styling procedures at a proficient level. Preparing and executing a full photo shoot for a creative cut and style look designed by the student. Preparing and executing a full photo shoot for a complete bridal look. Preparing and executing a full photo shoot for a complete glamour day look. Preparing and executing a full photo shoot for a complete glamour long hair evening look. Preparing and executing a full photo shoot for a complete Avant Garde look.

International Hair Studio Level Four Art /Tech = 40 hours Students will learn how to visually communicate their skills using digital graphic design tools. Students will spend time converting their digital images and photos into their own stylish digital portfolio using Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft PowerPoint. Understand the use of the Macintosh computer using the Mac operating system. Being able to acquire digital content and images from various sources (camera or CDROM). Gaining knowledge of scanning printed images. Learning how to optimize images for different media (print, web, CD). Acquiring a working knowledge of image handling using Photoshop. Understanding how to perform various photo retouching techniques. Producing a personalized business card. Creating 6 (or more) retouched images using Photoshop skills. Producing a dynamic PowerPoint slide presentation using finished images and music. Formatting digital files for CD backup and prepare for professional outputting to print. Printing a finished business card design and 2 retouched images. Producing an e-portfolio International Hair Studio SALON PRACTICUM (Internships) = 80 hours In order to participate in the Canadian Work Experience Salon Internships, each student must be in good health, be in good academic standing and meet the attendance requirements of the school. Students who qualify for Internships will be covered under the school s Work Safety Insurance. These are non paying work experiences / internships. Eligible students will have the chance to experience working with some of the top salons in Vancouver. Students will have the chance to participate in volunteer work in the salon, assisting stylists and owners with the everyday functions of a busy high-end salon. This will give the student a chance to evaluate the industry and at what level they would like to work as well as the shop to evaluate the student for potential employment placement and gain shop experience. Their will be a total of 80 hrs of work practicum s broken down into several placements. Classroom Instruction and Evaluation Instruction is delivered by lecture, interactive workshops with classmates and industry experts, practical demonstrations and practical work. Student learning is evaluated by: attendance and daily professional presentation, theory and practical quizzes and examinations, completion of practical service quotas and assessment of assigned projects. Student learning is enhanced by the use of a fully equipped and professional salon for practicing and executing practical services and assignments. In order to successfully complete the course, the student must attend 90% or more of the scheduled class days; achieve a minimum average of 70% in theory and achieve a minimum average of 70% in practical. The students are now ready to complete all practical and services for which they have been successfully examined. After successfully completing the academic criteria and fulfilling your financial obligations and requisite hours of attendance, you will receive a Blanche Macdonald Diploma. This Diploma is recognized as a first class standard of excellence in education and training. Admission Requirements Applicants must be in good health, have good manual dexterity and colour vision. You should not be allergic to hair styling products. It is essential that you are able to stand for prolonged periods. Additionally, you should have strong interpersonal skills and be comfortable in engaging in conversation with clients.
