1 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER AWARDS valued at over $13,500 CALL FOR ARTISTS OPEN UNTIL 12 MARCH 2018 Artists selected into HIDDEN 2018 will receive $300 per artwork Artists whose artwork requires transporting from a distance over 500km may be eligible for an additional $200 payment Rookwood Cemetery Sculpture Award (non acquisitive) $10,000 Elite Funeral Director s Award $1,000 People s Choice Award $500 Staff Choice Award $250 Artist at the Armory Award (optional) valued at $800 Peacock Gallery and Auburn Arts Studio Residency & Mentorship Award (optional) valued at $1000, including $200 in materials HIDDEN 2018 EXHIBITION OVERVIEW & TERMS AND CONDITIONS Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust (The Trust) is pleased to announce that submissions are now open for HIDDEN A Rookwood Sculpture Walk 2018. We invite established and emerging artists, artists from culturally diverse backgrounds, and artists with an interest in heritage to apply. HIDDEN is The Trust s signature annual event. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, HIDDEN was established to encourage public use of the historic Rookwood Cemetery and enable the greater community to explore Rookwood Cemetery - the oldest, largest and most multicultural cemetery in Australia. The exhibition is a platform for community engagement, and while it remains respectful of its purpose and place, it aims to de-mystify some of the misconceptions surrounding cemeteries as dark and intimidating settings. HIDDEN 2017 saw tracked visitation double (with just under 5,000 people visiting the exhibition) and media coverage increase three fold. HIDDEN is continuing, year-on-year, to grow in popularity and has firmly established itself as part of the Sydney outdoor sculpture event calendar. The success of HIDDEN 2017 was due to the extension of the walk to include the iconic Elephant House, along with an expanded program of activities that took place throughout the duration of the exhibition. This year, to meet this growing visition and media profile, we are developing additional programs to include community, youth, education and disadvantaged groups. Additional workshops will allow the possibility for casual artist employment. The Trust is interested in exhibiting sculptures that respond to themes surrounding the Rookwood site, such as history, culture, remembrance and love. This could include grief, loss, mourning, spirituality, the environment, and different cultural beliefs around burial and memorialisation. We are also interested in applications that are inspired by HIDDEN s 10th anniversary. This may include (but, is not limited to) notions relating to the changing role of public interaction with cemeteries over the past 10 years (such as the reinvention of graveyards into active parklands) and/ or an exploration of where we see ourselves as a community, in terms of conversations around end of life and how cemeteries could look in the future. Artists can choose to approach the themes in a representational, conceptual, symbolic or abstract way. The Trust is open to a wide range of artistic approaches and all forms and sizes of sculptures in all materials are eligible for exhibition. The Trust is particularly interested in any large scale works that can broadly address monumentality to reflect Rookwood s vast built surface. Artists may propose works yet to be made or alternatively, existing works that relate to the exhibition themes, so long as the artwork has been produced post September 2016. Artists are encouraged to speak with the Curator to discuss ideas before submission. To view work from previous HIDDEN exhibitions, visit www.hiddeninrookwood.com.au

AWARDS and HONORARIUMS Artist Honorariums Artists selected into HIDDEN 2018 will receive $300 per artwork. Artists whose artwork requires transporting from a distance over 500km may be eligible for an additional $200 payment. Rookwood Cemetery Sculpture Award - $10,000 The Trust is offering a non-acquisitive award of $10,000 for one artist. All artists that are selected in the HIDDEN 2018 exhibition will be eligible for this award. The successful artist will be selected by an external panel of judges - Sophia Kouyoumdjian (Coordinator of Parramatta Artists Studios and Curator of Primavera 2017) and Megan Robson (Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia). The award recipient will be announced at the HIDDEN launch. Artist at the Armory Award (optional) valued at $800 Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) is offering a residency for up to three months at Newington Armory for an artist who is selected in the HIDDEN 2018 exhibition. The successful artist (or artist collaborative) will have the use of one of the Armory s studios from May until July 2018 to prepare their work for HIDDEN 2018. The artist is also given the option to base themselves onsite in the residential cottage for the duration of the residency. Only artists who are proposing a work yet to be made are eligible for this award. Artists wishing to be considered for this award must select this option in the application form, as well as provide two referees. The successful artist will be selected by Tony Nesbitt (Manager, Arts Programming, SOPA). For more information about the Artists at the Armory program and Newington Armory visit: http://www.sydneyolympicpark. com.au/whats_on/arts_and_culture/artists_at_the_armory/facilities Peacock Gallery and Auburn Arts Studio Residency and Mentorship Award (optional) valued at $1000, including $200 in materials Cumberland Council is offering an award to an emerging Western Sydney artist of a pre-exhibition residency and mentorship to assist the artist to develop and create an artwork for HIDDEN 2018. This award will be chosen from applications that the HIDDEN selection panel determine needed further resolution prior to exhibition. 2 The award includes a professional development opportunity combined with a residency for an artist that is selected to participate in HIDDEN 2018. The successful artist will have the use of a space for four (4) weeks between June and July 2018 (dates to be agreed) to construct their work. The artist will also be provided with up to 12 hours of mentorship (with a mentor suitable to the artist s art practice and needs) to assist with the development of their proposal for HIDDEN. The purpose of this mentorship is to further develop the artist s concept or to further resolve to meet installation standards required for entry into the $10,000 Rookwood Cemetery Sculpture Award. It is not a collaboration between the artist and mentor. Only emerging artists who live in Western Sydney and who are proposing a work yet to be made are eligible to apply for this award. Artists wishing to be considered for this award must select this option on the application form. The recipient of this award will be chosen by Jenny Cheeseman (Arts Coordinator, Cumberland Council). For more information about the Peacock Gallery & Auburn Arts Studio see: http://www.auburn.nsw.gov.au/peacockgallery Elite Funeral Directors Award - $1,000 Elite Funeral Directors are offering a $1,000 award for one artist who chooses to address the themes applicable to this award. The successful artist will be selected by Sophia Kouyoumdjian and Megan Robson in conjunction with Diane Luccitti and Scott Rennie from Elite Funeral Directors. It will be awarded to the artwork that best addresses the conversation around end of life and the ways in which we honour our departed whilst best serving our own mourning journey. The award recipient will be announced at the HIDDEN launch. People s Choice Award - $500 The Trust is offering a $500 people s choice award. All artists that are selected in the HIDDEN 2018 exhibition will be eligible for this award. Audiences have the opportunity to vote onsite for their favourite sculpture. The award recipient will be notified the week after HIDDEN closes.

Staff Choice Award - $250 The Trust is also offering a $250 staff choice award. All artists that are selected in the HIDDEN 2018 exhibition will be eligible for this award. All employees of The Trust will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite sculpture. The award recipient will be notified the week after HIDDEN closes. No Application Fee CURATORIAL POLICY Artists selected in the HIDDEN 2018 exhibition will be selected by the Curator Cassandra Hard Lawrie and the two external judges Sophia Kouyoumdjian (Coordinator of Parramatta Artists Studios and Curator of Primavera 2017) and Megan Robson (Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia). Successful artists will be posted on the HIDDEN website by 20 April 2018. Site selection for all sculptures in the exhibition is the decision of the Curator. Artists are not to propose where their artworks should be placed. Due to the sensitivities of the site, this will be determined by the Curator, in consultation with the artists. Due to the complexities of the Rookwood site, the HIDDEN project team will be holding an information session for selected artsists (across two optional dates) to discuss processes for site allocation, install and risk management. These will be held on Friday 4 May 2018 (1.00pm-3.00pm) and Saturday 5 May 2018 (10.00am -12.00pm). Artists will be able to choose which session suits them best. Artists from inter-state and intra-state who are unable to attend will receive the presentation contents electronically. SELECTION CRITERIA Artworks selected into the HIDDEN 2018 exhibition will be considered in regard to the following criteria: Artists can propose existing works or proposals for works yet to be made. Transportation to and from the Site Artists are responsible for the transportation of their sculptures to and from the Rookwood site.

Installation, De-Installation and Maintenance Works must be available for exhibition from Monday 20 August Monday 1 October 2018. Installation will take place from Monday 20 August Thursday 23 August 2018 between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm through timed appointments. The Curator will be in contact with successful artists to coordinate the installation time. Artists requiring several days to install will need to arrange to do so within the set installation time frames with the Curator. Due to late afternoon public access to the cemetery, and for WHS reasons, artworks cannot be removed on the final day of the exhibition. De-installation will commence on Tuesday 2 October 2018. All artworks are to be removed by the artist by Friday 4 October 2018 by 5.00pm sharp unless otherwise agreed by The Trust. The artist is responsible for ensuring that the installation remains safe at all times. Please note that works that are considered to be unsafe will not be exhibited. If an artwork has special installation requirements, the responsibility for installing and de-installing the sculpture belongs to the Artist. If additional assistance is required, artists are encouraged to bring family, friends and/or professionals to provide this support. If artists intend to bring heavy equipment to be used during installation/de-installation it must be pre-approved by The Trust. Artists are responsible for removing all packaging and rubbish from the site once installation or de-installation is complete. Equipment providers may charge the cemetery for service and this charge may be passed on to the artist. This will not take place without being discussed prior with the artist and service will not proceed without written consent from the artist that they can meet the cost. The Trust will have limited basic equipment available for installation and de-installation but use of this must be pre-arranged with the Curator, due to the unpredictable nature of the cemetery. Please Note: equipment will not be provided if not pre-arranged. It is the artist s responsibility to maintain the work for the duration of the exhibition. Any damage to a work must be reported immediately to the Curator. Artworks are subject to removal at the discretion of the Curator if the rate of deterioration is beyond basic conservation methods. Artists must be respectful at all times of patrons using the site for funeral services. Artists Exhibit at their Own Risk The artist expressly agrees that any work exhibited by them shall be at their own risk. The Trust works in consultation with artists to identify potential risks and to negotiate methods to mitigate forseen risks. 5 The artist agrees to take all reasonable measures to: protect their works from theft protect their works from damage protect volunteers and members of the public from harm arising from their sculptural work. The Trust will exercise reasonable care with regards to the works but will not be responsible for loss or damage to any work while in its custody, during transit or on exhibition. The artist waives any right to claim against the Trust for any damage to, or theft of, their artwork howsoever arising, including in the event of negligence on the part of the Trust. The artist waives any right to claim against the Trust for personal injury to them during the course of the exhibition (including installation and removal of the artwork) howsoever arising, including in the event of negligence on the part of the Trust. The artist indemnifies the Trust against any claim for: damage to, or theft of, their artwork injury to a member of the public arising from their artwork injury to any person arising from the installation and removal of their artwork injury to themselves whilst participating in the exhibition, including whilst installing and/or removing their artwork. The artist agrees to abide by the relevant work, health and safety legislation, including and especially in, the installation and deinstallation of their sculpture. It is recommended that the artist take out insurance from an industry provider, such as NAVA, for public liability. The artist authorises the Trust s staff to move their sculpture or remove it from the site for any reason, including but not limited to, public safety, damage and/or potential damage to the sculpture. The Trust will endeavour to consult with the artist in the first instance, but may be required to act immediately for safety reasons.

Rookwood Cemetery s gates are locked from sunset to sunrise. Security does patrol the cemetery at night, but will not be specifically stationed at the site of the exhibition. Security at the Cemetery shall in no way give rise to any responsibility for the works on exhibition. Work Health and Safety The artist agrees that they shall at all times, before, during and after the exhibition, comply with the HIDDEN Risk Management Plan. A PDF of the HIDDEN Risk Management Plan is available on the website. Following the selection of artists a Risk Assessment is undertaken of all selected artworks. Artists will be advised of the outcomes of this assessment and some artworks may require modifications to proposed construction/install methods. The artist is required to complete a risk assessment form prior to the installation of their artwork. This form is provided by the Trust and completed form must be approved by the Trust before installation takes place. At the time of install, the HIDDEN risk assessment team may require further modifications to proposed install methods. In this instance, the artist will be consulted prior to install and alternate install processes may be negotiated. Artists must promptly comply with the negotiated outcome and all instructions from the exhibition Curator and the Trust s staff. Signage and Personal Sponsorship An exhibition catalogue will be produced to include the name of the artist, title of the sculpture, materials, dimensions, brief artist statement, brief artist biography, sale price and image of the work.
