He spent all his spare time painting, often on the Duke of Sutherland's estate at Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire and at Biddulph Grange. It is probably that Bentley Eshaldwell Brewery in Aberford Road, Woodlesford, founded 1828, commissioned these vessels for advertising purposes and promoting the Brewery's ales.
