The composition of the Dead Sea salts is also unique. Whereas in ordinary sea water sodium chloride (common salt) is the major constituent (about 80% of the total salt content) the Dead Sea on the other hand contains a considerably smaller proportion of sodium chloride, the balance consisting of magnesium, potassium and calcium chlorides, and a comparatively high concentration of bromides. It is believed that the therapeutic properties of the Dead Sea are due in large extent to the presence of these other salts, mainly those of flowers, seeds, leaves, and roots to promote health and well-being, many people make the mistake of thinking aromatherapy is nothing more than scented candles. On the contrary, aromatherapy covers many issues of health and well-being. The scientific reasons behind why and how aromatherapy works involve the human body and our response to scent. Experts suggest the olfactory nerve takes the smells of essential oils and carries them to the parts of the brain involving our emotions and hormones. Further, while sodium accounts for approximately 80% of the salt content of normal sea water, it comprises much less of the salt total in water from the Dead Sea. The balance of the salts in Dead Sea water are magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride and bromides. Why are these types of salts beneficial? Magnesium is important for both combating stress and fluid retention, slowing skin aging and calming the nervous system. Calcium is effective at preventing water retention, increasing circulation and strengthening bones and nails. Potassium energizes the body, helps to balance skin moisture and is a crucial mineral to replenish following intense exercise. Bromides act to ease muscle stiffness and relax muscles. Sodium is important for the lymphatic fluid balance (this in turn is important for immune system function). So we can see that bathing in high quality sea salt could replenish the minerals which are critical to our skin metabolism. Studies have been conducted on the health benefits of bathing in Dead Sea salts. One such study was conducted by Dr. I. Machtey 1 on 103 patients suffering from osteoarthritis and tendonitis. Patients were either treated with baths of 7.5%, 2% or 0.5% Dead Sea salt concentration. Improvement was found after as little as 1 week of treatment for those treated with 7.5% or 2% salt baths. By the study's end, 80% of the patients reported less pain; 70% experienced improved mobility and 60% were able to decrease their use of analgesics. Dr. J. Arndt 2 studied the effect of Dead Sea salt baths on psoriasis. Fifty patients were treated for 3-4 weeks, with 3-4 baths per week. In as little as 1 week, many patients treated with a 10% salt concentration in their baths experienced marked improvement. This improvement included relief from itching, sleep disturbances, and skin scaling. Treatment with Dead Sea Salts is not associated with any side effects. Vol. 5 Issue 2 Page 5

Hydration and Skin Needs The skin acts as a barrier to the outside world, protecting the body's organs and tissues from damage and infection. It also prevents loss of water and other body fluids, and helps keep body temperature in control. Normally, healthy skin contains about 10 to 20% water. If the skin's water content is less than 10%, it will become dehydrated. Dehydrated skin may be more likely to become chapped or cracked. Dehydration happens when the skin is no longer able to keep up its water content. This may be due to a number of factors, including problems with the keratinocytes or damage to the outer layers of the skin (both of which allow more water to escape), extreme temperatures, high winds, dry air, exposure to chemicals, using too much soap, or certain medications (including vitamin A, retinoids, and certain medications used to treat high cholesterol). Seniors may be more prone to skin dehydration. Why is skin dehydration a problem? Skin dehydration can make it a less effective barrier to irritants and infection. Because water is needed for vital processes within the skin, dehydrated skin may not be able to repair itself as easily as wellhydrated skin. General physical dehydration can also lead to dry skin. Dry skin is a term applied to skin that is tight, rough, scaly, and cracked. Three factors are involved in causing dry skin: dehydration (described above), delipidization (the loss of fat [lipids] in the skin, which increases water loss), and problems with the keratinocytes (leading to changes in skin structure and water balance). Normally, the skin maintains its own water balance. The epidermis prevents water loss to the outside. However, if the epidermis is damaged or unhealthy, water loss increases and the water balance is lost. How can you stop your skin from dehydrating? Remember these simple tips: Low humidity can cause skin dehydration. Use a humidifier in your bedroom and at work, if possible. Sweating can also cause dehydration. Keep the room temperature cool so that you will be less likely to perspire. Protect your skin by covering up on cold windy days. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals and soaps. If you need to work with chemicals (such as household cleaners), wear rubber gloves. Use warm, not hot, water to wash your hands. Apply an emollient product (a cream or ointment containing ingredients that help keep water in the skin, such as urea or paraffin) to your skin. Dry Skin Skin cells are constantly being renewed to form the outermost layer of skin. To maintain and protect healthy skin, the outermost layer must have optimal water content and optimal types of special fat cells called lipids. Without sufficient water and lipids, the skin becomes dry. When the proportions of fat cells vary in quality and quantity, the result is dry skin or xerosis (flaky, cracked, or rough skin). There are several types of dry skin: Delicate skin: This skin type is essentially normal and not oily, but sometimes can be fine and delicate. Delicate skin offers little resistance to the physical and chemical assaults of the environment. This type of skin reddens quickly and suffers easily from a skin condition called rosacea, where the skin Vol. 5 Issue 2 Page 6

flushes and stays flushed for long periods of time. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%. One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back, and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy shortterm memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day? Temporarily dry skin: This skin type is temporarily dry when exposed to physical elements such as sunburn, burns, cold temperatures, abrasions, and certain medications. When the skin repairs itself after being exposed to these elements, dryness and flaking usually occurs. Other factors also play a role, such as changes in humidity and the use of soaps and detergents. Dry skin in people over 55: As your skin ages, oil production and sweat secretions slow down, resulting in extreme drying of the skin. Genetically dry skin: This type of skin is dry, rough, and scaly. The outer, or epidermal, layer is covered in tiny cracks, mainly on the back of the hands, outer side of the arms, forearms, and legs. These conditions worsen when the skin is exposed to the above-mentioned elements. This skin type is found in people with a skin condition called atopic dermatitis, in people with fair skin, and in certain families. You can also help prevent and treat dry skin by following the suggestions below: Bathing and Dry Skin Isn't bathing good for dry skin, since you are soaking the skin in water? The answer is both "yes" and "no." The solution to helping dry skin is not just to add water to the skin's surface. Dry skin results from the skin being unable to maintain its moisture content. Healthy skin provides a natural barrier to water loss. But after a long soak in the water, this barrier becomes less effective and the skin starts to dehydrate. Keep in mind these bathing tips for dry skin: Limit your bath to 5 to 10 minutes. Do not add harsh soaps or chemicals to the bath. Use warm water, not hot water. Avoid bath products with large amounts of detergents (such as bubble baths), although bath oils may be used. Kandesn Spa Salts and Kandesn Spa Bath Oil. Seek Protection From the Sun It's ironic, that while the use of sunscreen has increased, skin cancer rates in America continue to climb. People think that sunscreen provides full protection, but that's a misconception, You can't apply a little bit of sunscreen, play golf all day, and think you're immune from the sun's harmful rays. According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers in the U.S. everyone, especially people living in the southern part of the country, should be on the defense against skin cancer. The three main types of skin cancer -- basal cell, squamous cell and melanoma -- are preventable and curable if treated early. To prevent skin cancer, it is important to: Avoid direct sun exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM. Apply plenty of sunscreen and reapply about every two hours, especially if you are in the water or sweating heavily. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Use Oi Lin Natural Emulsion SPF 30. It is a gentle, all natural sunscreen that is concentrated and contains antioxidants to help maintain skin s youthful elasticity and diminish visible sings of aging. Also, Oi Lin Natural Protective Lotion SPF 25 which is ideal for use during outdoor athletic activities. Women can get extra protection from the sun by using makeup that contains sunscreen. Many of the major makeup brands contain sunscreen. Wear protective clothing. Although Texans like to wear shorts during warm weather, lightweight, long sleeved shirts and long pants shield skin from sun exposure. Don a broad-brimmed hat when you're in the sun. This type of headwear protects your head, but also covers your ears, which are susceptible to sun damage. Protect your lips. Like the ears, the lips are prone to skin cancer, especially the lower lip. Wear sunscreen products that are made especially for the lips and reapply often. Teach children to prevent skin cancer. If children learn to apply sunscreen and follow other sunprotection guidelines, it will become a habit they will carry into adulthood. Are You at Risk for Skin Cancer Some factors place individuals at higher risk for skin cancer, including: Personal history of skin cancer Family history of skin cancer Light skin; blond or red hair; blue, green or gray eyes Age 50 or over Weakened immune system Childhood sunburns Regularly check your body for suspicious marks and use a hand mirror to observe your back. If you notice any change in a mole or "brown spot," consult your physician immediately. Vol. 5 Issue 2 Page 8

It shows you how many times a key phrase was searched last month, and possible related searches. For example, in December 2004 the term "Best MLM" was searched 75,534 times on Yahoo. Now keep in mind this is only for Yahoo. Then there is Google.... What does that tell you? There are thousands upon thousands that are not only open to the idea of a home based business like Sunrider, but are SEARCHING for the opportunity! They are out there! Now go find them! But that's only part of the story. The term "MLM Lead" was searched almost 79,000 times. Net workers are starving for leads, aren't they? But the story gets even more interesting.
