Technical Data Sheet Velvesil Plus Velvesil* Plus Gel INCI Name: Cyclopentasiloxane (and) C30-45 Alkyl Cetearyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer (and) PEG/PPG-20/23 Dimethicone Product Description Velvesil Plus gel is an easy to process and readily emulsifiable silicone crosspolymer gel. It has excellent compatibility with many organic materials and can help enhance the sensory performance of a wide range of personal care products. It is the latest addition to Momentive Performance Materials proprietary silicone crosspolymer gel technology. Velvesil Plus gel is the unique combination of a silicone crosspolymer gel and a silicone gel EO/PO copolymer. The crosspolymer gel helps provide the desired powdery, silky skin feel, while the pendant silicone polyether copolymer helps provide ease of processing. Velvesil Plus gel has excellent compatibility with many hydrophilic, organic, and silicone components commonly used in the formulation of personal care products. Thus, it is a product that can readily be blended into the oil phase and then mixed with the water phase to help form creamy, elegant products at low temperature and low shear. Key Features and Typical Benefits Velvesil Plus gel is a silicone crosspolymer gel that is easily processed at low temperature and low shear. This can help reduce manufacturing time and expense while delivering an elegant and dry powdery skin feel. Velvesil Plus gel is compatible with a wide range of organic materials, including highly polar organics. It is also compatible with water, glycerin and many hydrophilic skin care actives and can aid dispersion of hydrophilic pigments, including untreated pigments such as titanium dioxide. Formulations containing Velvesil Plus gel can range from low viscosity, sprayable, emulsions to highly structured anhydrous gels. Velvesil Plus gel is an excellent candidate for flexibility in formulating a wide range of products with varying viscosity needs. Potential Applications Skin Care: Lotions Creams Masks Anti-aging products Sun Care: Lotions Creams Sunless tanners Sprayable products Color Cosmetics: Foundations Concealers Mascaras Rinse-off skin care: Shower gels In-shower conditioners Facial cleansers Hair Care: Conditioners Styling aids Processing Considerations Velvesil Plus gel is an easy to process material because of its dual nature as a gel and as an emulsification aid. It is readily processed in both water in oil emulsions and oil in water emulsions. Velvesil Plus gel leaves a smooth, uniform coating of material, visibly indicating its ability to easily disperse hydrophilic, untreated titanium dioxide. When working with traditional silicone crosspolymer gels it is easy to achieve non-flowable creams, but it can be more challenging to achieve a stable formulation with the viscosity of a lotion. A unique characteristic of Velvesil Plus gel is its ability to be easily incorporated into low viscosity lotion type products, even sprayable lotions. It has been observed that the combination of a silicone crosspolymer gel with an elastomer, such as SFE839, can produce a unique sensory experience. The blend of the two materials can help provide a silky, cushioning application experience that glides on gently leaving a dry, powdery feel. This particular blend can be an excellent option to consider in the sensitive eye area and in facial formulations. To derive the sensory enhancement value of Velvesil Plus gel, a 5 percent concentration is generally recommended within the formula. At that level, there is typically perceivable difference in the powdery, silky skin feel. The emulsifying aid of Velvesil Plus gel can be formulation dependent but typically begins at a 10 percent concentration level. It is recommended that a primary emulsifier be included in the personal care formulation.
