SOME UNIFORM DOS AND DON TS FOR 2013-2014 We know that many families will begin shopping for uniforms early in the summer, and you might want to take advantage of Memorial Day or July 4 th sales events to save some money on shoes and other items. With that in mind, we wanted to compile what we hope are some helpful suggestions regarding the uniform policy at ESD and especially address some misconceptions and common mistakes. The three biggest uniform violations (that lead to the most demerits) are outerwear, shoes, and skirt length. The full uniform policy can be found in the handbook on-line, and it will be updated in July to reflect the policy for next year. There is only one significant change for next year, and it is listed below (sweatshirts and outerwear). SWEATSHIRTS AND OUTERWEAR This policy is the same for boys and girls. The handbook will read: Sweater: Solid navy cardigan, pullover, crew or V-neck. On formal days the only warm up option is a sweater under blazer. Sweatshirt: Solid navy sweatshirt or a solid navy fleece. Seniors may wear college sweatshirts. Sweatshirts may not be worn on formal uniform days. Navy spirit wear purchased in the Eagle s Nest is acceptable. Coats: Navy ESD windbreaker, Varsity team jacket or ESD letter jacket. Coats may not be worn on formal uniform days in lieu of a navy blazer. Non-ESD coats are acceptable outside, but must be removed in the classroom. The change for 2013-2014 is that ONLY navy outerwear will be allowed. Gray is no longer an option. SOCKS There are minor changes for next year (eliminating the gray sock option, making the rule the same for boys and girls). The handbook will read: Socks Plain white or navy socks. Navy above the ankle socks must be worn on formal uniform days. As with all ESD uniform options, small, minor trademarks are acceptable. However, other than that, the socks should be plain. Also note that ankle socks are allowed, as long as they are visible outside of the shoes. Examples:

Figure 1 - These socks are fine, small trademark allowed. Figure 2 - These socks are fine, small trademark allowed. The shoes are not uniform. Figure 3 - These socks are fine, the shoes could use some polish.

Figure 4 - These socks are not uniform, no stripes or designs allowed. Figure 5 - Go Rangers! But not uniform. SHOES The shoe policy has included more and more options over the past few years. There are no planned changes for next year, other than some clarifications. The policy will read: For girls - Solid black, brown, tan or cordovan dress shoes; or white and navy saddle oxfords with white laces. Shoes must have enclosed toe and heel, which may not exceed one inch in height. All shoes must be in good condition. Students may not mark or color their saddle oxfords. Clogs or any type of sandals are not considered dress shoes. For boys - Solid black, brown, tan or cordovan dress shoes. Shoes must have enclosed toe and heel, which may not exceed one inch in height. Clogs or any type of sandal are not considered dress shoes. All shoes must be in good condition. Senior boys may wear cowboy or dress boots. Clarifications: We essentially allow any type of DRESS SHOE that is SOLID black, brown, tan, or cordovan. We do not allow two toned shoes (except for the saddle oxfords), and we do not allow gray or white shoes. Also, we have noticed that students often consider leisure shoes as dress shoes. Please note that any shoe with a sneaker-like appearance is not a dress shoe. One of the primary misunderstandings occurs when a shoes has a large rubber trim around the base, it is not considered to be a dress shoe.

Examples: Figure 6 - Shoes are ok, socks are not (note the blue patch on the top of the foot, back of sock has stripes). Figure 7 - Shoes are not uniform - two tone, not solid color. Figure 8 - Shoes are fine, socks are fine.

Figure 9 - Shoes are not uniform, we do not allow colors other than those listed. Figure 10 - Shoes are not uniform - note sneaker like rubber band around shoe. Figure 11 - Very nice shoes, but two tone is not allowed.

SKIRT LENGTH The skirt length policy is not set to change for 2013-2014. The handbook reads: Navy-green-gold plaid. Skirt length should be no more than 6 inches above the top of the knee in the front and no more than 6 inches above the crease of the knee in the back.
