Higher National Unit Specification General information for centres Unit code: DN63 34 Unit purpose: This Unit is designed to enable candidates to develop skills in handling and dressing hair with added postiche and padding. The candidates should demonstrate ability to research, design and reproduce styles, showing creativity and imagination. This unit would be of interest to the candidate interested in creative aspects of hair styling and may expand into Make up Artistry On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to: 1 Research hairstyles with postiche and padding. 2 Plan and design and produce hairstyles using postiche and padding. 3 Prepare, dress and evaluate hairstyles with added postiche and padding. Credit points and level: 1 HN Credit at SCQF level 7: (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7*) *SCQF credit points are used to allocate credit to qualifications in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Each qualification in the Framework is allocated a number of SCQF credit points at an SCQF level. There are 12 SCQF levels, ranging from Access 1 to Doctorates. Recommended prior knowledge and skills: It would be beneficial for the candidate to have knowledge of long hair work or 5 years current commercial experience Core skills: There may be opportunities to gather evidence towards core skills in this Unit, although there is no automatic certification of core skills or core skills components. Context for delivery: This is an optional unit in the framework for HNC Hairdressing. If this Unit is delivered as part of a group award, it is recommended that it should be taught and assessed within the subject area of the group award to which it contributes. Assessment: Candidates will produce a portfolio with a combination of written information, photographs and/or sketches of the researched hairstyles and explain how current hairstyles with added postiche and padding have evolved from the 19 th century. Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards Unit code: DN63 34 The sections of the Unit stating the Outcomes, knowledge and/or skills, and evidence requirements are mandatory. Where evidence for Outcomes is assessed on a sample basis, the whole of the content listed in the knowledge and/or skills section must be taught and available for assessment. Candidates should not know in advance the items on which they will be assessed and different items should be sampled on each assessment occasion. Outcome 1 Research hairstyles with postiche and padding Knowledge and/or skills Styling/dressing techniques used to style hair with postiche Styling/dressing techniques used to style hair with padding Identify the periods when these styles were fashionable Types of postiche Types/shapes of padding Show evidence of research Evidence requirements Candidates will need to provide evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and/or skills by showing that they can: research hairstyles from 19 th,20 th and 21 st centuries identify three hairstyles, one with added padding, two with added postiche (one with added length and one with added density) identify the period they were fashionable e.g. 1811-1830, 1966-1971, 2001-2003 explain the changes and/or similarities from each century to present day explain the fundamental thread carried from century to century compile evidence from the research which should include a bibliography Candidates must produce a portfolio with a combination of written information, photographs and/or sketches of the researched hairstyles and explain how current hairstyles with added postiche and padding have evolved from the 19 th century to present day. Higher National Unit specification: statement of standards (cont) Outcome 2 Plan, design hairstyles and prepare postiche and padding Knowledge and/or skills Client consultation Hair assessment Plan/design suitable hairstyle Selection of appropriate hair preparation and styling/dressing techniques Preparation of postiche/padding Evidence requirements Candidates will need evidence to demonstrate their skills and/or knowledge by showing that they can: plan, design and produce three hairstyles from research, one from each century (19 th century, 20 th century and 21 st century) select hair preparation and styling/dressing technique/s to achieve one style with added padding and two styles with added postiche (One for added length and one for added density) assess the hair length and weight for suitability Candidates will be required to plan, design and produce three hairstyles. At least 50% of the hair must be dressed up. A minimum of 25% postiche/padding must be used. Candidates must produce a portfolio with a combination of written information, photographs and/or sketches of the researched hairstyles, planning/design notes, sketches, photographs of postiche/padding to be used and explain how today s hairstyles with added postiche and padding have evolved from the 19 th century. Higher National Unit specification: support notes (cont) Blending the postiche identified from your research Securing the style client comfort unseen Evaluating the hairstyles Evaluate the hairstyles against the research and identify and explain similarities/differences. Guidance on the delivery and assessment of this Unit Opportunities for developing Core Skills The delivery should be in the form of practical demonstrations with candidates practising the skills required to achieve the competences of creatively designing and performing hairstyles with added postiche and padding. The candidate should receive lectures and participate in discussions on the history of dressing hair and the most recent changes to dressing hair with added postiche and padding. The portfolio should include written and photographic evidence along with, magazine cuttings and/or sketches. The practical exercise should be performed on a client, in a controlled environment and assessed against a checklist Open learning Although the theoretical aspects could be studied through Open Learning, the high level of practical competencies required would create difficulties in the delivery and assessment of this Unit. General information for candidates This Unit is designed to give you an understanding of, how today s hairstyles with added postiche and padding have evolved and to enable you to develop your skills in dressing hair with added postiche and padding. On completion of this Unit you will be able to: 1 Research hairstyles with postiche and padding 2 Plan and design hairstyles using postiche and padding 3 Demonstrate hairstyles with added postiche and padding Outcome 1 To achieve this Outcome you will need evidence to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the history of hairstyles with added postiche and padding.
