getting from file to finished jewelry... When a new request and CAD file is received, it s added to the queue so its progress can be monitored. The CAD file is validated to be sure there will be no production problems, and a cost estimate is sent to the customer. If approved, the file moves to fabrication. A model for the casting mold could be created from photo-cured resin or by computeraided milling. Once cast, the new piece of custom jewelry is polished and set, photographed for our archives, and the finished jewelry is shipped to the delighted customer. approve the quote, we take care of everything with normal turn times of six to eight working days. B U S I N E S S S O L U T I O N S selling custom in your store Experience helps make the sale; new CounterSketch Studio to be boon to custom work taking a customer s request for a finished piece of custom jewelry from idea to actuality is a job that Green Lake Jewelry Works does very well. Most stores sell largely from the case and custom work is a smaller portion of the total business. Yet, at Green Lake roughly 95% of their jewelry sales are custom pieces. Furthermore, their really unique philosophies about how the business operates have brought the store to this level. These philosophies include the store s professional image, the total customer experience and Jim TuTTle Green Lake JeweLry works seattle, washington providing the store s design and creation teams with the proper tools to design effectively. As a whole, the store s main ambition is to increase their client s Wow factor at every opportunity. The Professional Image When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is that the entire store has a comfortable artisan feel. The staff is also dressed a little differently, somewhat artsy-quirky, according to owner Jim Tuttle. In our store, if you fit into a typical corporate environment, you re a little too corporate for us. The look we want is approachable, he continues. This approachable look and feel also extends to the website, where many of Green Lake s current client base begin their journey to their personal piece. It s gigantically important to have a professional and artistic website, especially when you are saying, trust me, I know style, Tuttle advises. You have to show that style online and in the store. How your employees dress, what color your walls are, how the store is arranged and how your website looks are all part of the professional opinion your clients form about you. The ring is just an avenue; that they designed it themselves is much more important, he notes. It s the story that keeps clients telling their friends about the experience they had at the jewelry store, and it s what keeps them coming back for more, Jim emphasizes. He says it s free advertising, and that s the best kind! A Typical Design Session By the time clients come into the store, 60-70 percent of them have already looked on our website. Tuttle says a client s experience usually starts with these questions Have you been in before and, if so, do you have an idea of what you would like to see?, and have you been on our website? Once a client has seen the website, a live piece or just has an idea of what they want, one of our 25 designers will sit at a computer station and begin narrowing down what their dream piece will look like. Our designers show pieces from the cases and from the computer inventory that are similar to what the client is talking about. We generally draw clients more to the computer screen as we re almost certainly going to have hundreds more similar pieces on our website than sitting in the case. We show the web page as an avenue to take them down the custom design route. When working with the client on a custom idea, the process is rarely less than half an hour, and commonly rounds up into The Client Experience If a client has to make a choice between a great experience or a great ring, we would prefer the great experience, says store owner Jim Tuttle. So everything we do from the moment they come in until they leave is about the experience. B U S I N E S S S O L U T I O N S an hour or more. And, by the end of the process, as many as 70% of their clients have paid a 50% deposit for their custom piece of jewelry. Tuttle s staff sends clients better sketches or CAD renderings pretty quickly after the initial discussion, even for clients who don t commit right away. Ultimately, they end up designing a custom piece of jewelry for a large percentage of those as well. All of the custom pieces continue through a process of sketch/ CAD, until the client says, That s it, you re right there! And, Wow wins again. Green Lake encourages clients to come back and see their jewelry in the process, but only about half of them will come back in before pickup. Ten percent of our clients will visit the store as many as five or six times before picking up their finished piece of jewelry. We sell about 95% of our jewelry as custom work. We actually sell very little out of the case. We ve always just gone straight to custom. Creating with Computers Today, most design sessionsare still pencil and paper in front of Jim s clients. Jim Tuttle Matrix is used all day long every day, but not live in front of clients very often, because it is just too complex for that purpose, he continues. Delivery time frames are usually quoted as four to five weeks, depending on the level of complexity in enhancements such as micropavé, filigree, hand engraving and other advanced skillsets. By and large, for those complicated jobs, people are just fine waiting for that part. Some clients want their jobs more quickly, and that s where Jim hopes to incorporate the new CounterSketch Studio into his business. I am confident that a lot of people will like it as it will help them work through the I like this, but I want it different phase. The Wow factor is going to be great, he emphasizes. We think the CounterSketch Studio paradigm is going to help us deliver for the customer who hears three to six weeks turntime and comments that they didn t plan to design a house! Jim says, and he adds that he thinks it will help them close some of the clients who believe their other process is just too complicated. Being able to show them a virtual rendering in just a few minutes and having it ready for pickup in a couple of weeks will be amazing, Jim says. So far, he s just started training staff, three people so far, in addition to the one who went to the main training with him. I ve already shown it to some of my existing customers, just to get their reactions, he continued. Jim was excitedly telling the customers, This is so cool. Think about how we did it in the past! What a changed world! Countersketch Studio really has potential, for stores like Green Lake and for stores that have never really done custom design with computers, or custom design at all. As for Jim Tuttle, he s still unveiling the potential of CounterSketch Studio for his store. But one thing he knows for sure, custom design on computers will never be the same again. I think for the average store that doesn t do custom work, CounterSketch Studio is going to be a boon. There s just no estimating that Wow factor! The Future of Business The selling experience is the future of business, Jim says, Take Apple they have product online, but they spend millions selling the experience. Combining beauty, design and the experience is important. This is the future of all retail. While quality of goods is important, your business will have to give great experiences along with the customization services you offer. If you are only dealing with price in your store, back up 10 steps; you ve got the wrong approach. The key is that everybody wants to be different, Tuttle stresses.
