37 QATAR AIRWAYS FLIES TWICE DAILY TO HONG KONG FROM DOHA Russell-Harvey Fernandez Combining his passions for technology and travel, Russell-Harvey Fernandez has launched website One Tech Traveller, chronicling his adventures and offering tips on the latest hotspots and gadgets for the tech-savvy traveller I ve always been into tech I used to work for Microsoft and I wanted to share that with my personal opinions and practical use. It s amazing how much technology has changed travel. It s much easier to find hidden gems, and people now want not just different places, but different experiences. Because I ve done my research, I can help people discover that place and lifestyle from a local perspective even if they re only there for a few days. I m a more spontaneous and flexible traveller now. I don t book in advance instead I connect with people there and get their recommendations, through apps like Meetup. It s better to hear the local view. In Asia, the community-based app OpenRice is a really comprehensive guide to restaurants. Sometimes the tourist board sites aren t the most reliable, so it s good to look at blogs and apps that are constantly updated, particularly for things like local transport systems or hiking trails. We think of Hong Kong as a bustling city, but through great tips from others, I explored beautiful villages and territories outside it too. Citymapper is excellent for finding the best routes, however you want to get there whether it s the fastest, cheapest or most scenic way. I also love having the latest gear. I use a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, a Power Packer to store cables, and I can edit videos on my Surface Book touchscreen or use it as a laptop. I m a minimalist traveller, so everything has to be versatile and useful. My Peak Design 30l backpack has dividers you can reconfigure, depending on what you want to carry, and I ve got a flatpack water bottle that rolls up, and a Peak Design clip so my camera (Yi 4K+) is always accessible. Clothing wise, you never want weather to hamper your travels. Kydra and Unbound Marino have great outdoor gear it s insulating, antibacterial and doesn t absorb sweat, so it s comfortable and regulates temperature. Plus it s smart enough to wear hiking or out to dinner. I also like down jackets, which are warm but not bulky, linen and Tencel, and crossterrain shoes are durable and compact. Smart equipment means you can be a smart traveller: more mobile, active, organised, able to do more in less time, and you can enjoy your travels without compromising on quality. I watch crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter to spot the next big thing, and I pick out highlights on my website. Technology is hugely empowering for travellers: you feel more knowledgeable and confident, and you re not afraid to dive into new places and be open to new experiences. onetechtraveller.com

38 QATAR AIRWAYS FLIES TO LONDON FROM DOHA SIX TIMES A DAY Bonnie Rakhit A London-based journalist, Bonnie Rakhit is the founder and editor of luxury travel and lifestyle blog thestyletraveller.com, which offers a fashion editor s guide to some of the world s most stylish destinations I got the travel bug early. My mum was a history and politics lecturer, so we d visit ancient civilisations: the Pyramids or the Parthenon. I then worked as a fashion editor for Elle, and I found that although I was travelling to far-flung destinations for shoots, what appeared in the magazine was a model by a pool it could be anywhere. I wanted to show the real place, and also create a guide for people like me who travel a lot and are short of time. The Style Traveller is an insider s look, and provides highlights for short stays: 24-hour guides, or Top 10 things to do in that destination. Smart or stylish travel doesn t have to be high fashion it s more appreciating aesthetics. I look for beautiful areas that encapsulate the essence of a place, and I much prefer authentic boutiques and products made locally. I tend to pick destinations with wonderful backdrops for pictures and that offer something different, but wherever I am, I try to find its beauty. We re such a visual culture now with apps like Instagram, so you can vividly communicate the experience. I m also inspired by period costume dramas and classic films. My partner jokes: We re heading for the beach and you re wearing a ball gown again! But that golden age of travel is so evocative, and fashion allows you to connect with a place s history. I also source new trends from fashion weeks including off-the-cuff ones like Stockholm, Morocco and Australia. But designers look to how people are travelling, so it s cyclical. I take a few staple items in my carry-on, in case my luggage gets lost: a jersey, black maxi dress, which covers everything and can go from day to evening with jewellery and heels; a pashmina, which acts as a blanket on the flight and doubles as a beach towel or wrap top; and a bikini, in case my room isn t ready when I land, in which case I can go to the pool. Plus, as a blogger, I always have my iphone and camera. People used to do one big holiday; now, travel s so accessible I can do 34 trips a year. It s much easier to research what you need to pack each place has its own quirks, and I like dressing and experiencing it like a local. I loved Havana in Cuba a wonderful combination of a colourful, historic city and passionate spirit. I ve recently done Hainan a tropical island paradise you wouldn t expect from China; and the Caribbean, which I love anyway, but wanted to show people that lots of the islands are still thriving. And there s always more on the wish list, plus hopefully more discoveries to make. thestyletraveller.com

41 QATAR AIRWAYS FLIES DAILY TO WASHINGTON DC FROM DOHA Mary Jo Binker Washington DC docent for Context, a company that provides private guides and specialist tours for the intellectually curious traveller, Mary Jo Binker specialises in presidential history and the background of the district Originally I worked in communications, but living in Washington fired up my passion for American history, so I got my master s. I ve been working as a docent for Context since 2016. I get to use my academic background and engage with people. Our small groups mean you can have a real conversation, and I tailor tours to their interests and level of knowledge. Some times of year are particularly busy, like spring and fall that s the best walking weather. Tours are usually three hours, and we cover a lot of ground: Front Yard America goes from the National Mall to the Lincoln Memorial, and Gov Works goes up Pennsylvania Avenue and ends at Capitol Hill. It s about putting 200 years of American history in context, and physically seeing it helps enormously. Washington is a city of layers so, for example, the Willard Hotel is where Lincoln stayed when he came to be inaugurated, two blocks from that is the new Smithsonian African-American museum, and then it s the Washington Monument. That s an interesting juxtaposition, because Washington was the father of our country, but also a slave owner. One of the most fascinating things to me as a historian is memory: what we choose to remember, and how we shape our narrative through buildings and monuments. Whenever I go to a new city, I seek out New Deal architecture. President Roosevelt created a series of federal programmes to put people back to work during the Great Depression, and you can see that in the construction of parks, post offices and recreational facilities. Washington DC s location tells you so much. It s on a river, because George Washington was already thinking of westward expansion, even before he knew how big the country would be, and it s close to his plantation, so he could keep an eye on it. Architecturally, Jefferson looked to Ancient Rome, because that was an exemplary republic I always point out elements like eagles on the tour. My goal is to make everyone as enthusiastic about history as I am. I find new angles, like if you walk round the back of the Lincoln Memorial, you face onto Memorial Bridge, which was designed to be the bridge of reconciliation between the North and South and if you look straight up, you ll see Arlington House. Robert E Lee came down from that house to be offered the chance to command the Union army, but he couldn t raise his hand against the people he grew up with. It s a spine-tingling spot when you connect people to an event or a place, it has a whole new meaning. Smart travel for me is engaging with that other layer and walking in the shoes of people before you. It s an incredible feeling. contexttravel.com
