Coordinated Flare- DIRCM CM Techniques The implementation of joint flare- DIRCM countermeasure techniques is supposed to be effective against 4 th generation image seekers. The concept is based on the possibility of using: ü Dazzling effect induced by the DIRCM laser on the seeker image plane ü To induce a temporary decoy of the threat which improves the flares effectiveness Pag. 6 Pag. 6
DIRCM- Flares Coordination: Remarks The identified countermeasure shall be still effective against previous generations of seekers ü Jamming code requirement. Flares could be a huge source of disturbance for DIRCMthreattracking algorithms, due to MWS o False alarms DIRCM o IR false targets ü A blanking technique shall be implemented. On Board ECM for Rotary Wing Platform Protection C High ERP for effectiveness also at very short range C Full flexibility of programming advanced waveform C Multi- threat capability, almost no limit in dense scenario D Deep a- priori knowledge required (complex ECM waveforms are required) D Effectiveness against last generation seeker, HOJ, etc D Difficulties in achieving large miss distance without cooperating maneuvering. Active Phased Array for Helo Self- Protection Pag. 10 Pag. 10
Off Board ECM for Rotary Wing Platform Protection C No need for deep a- priori knowledge required (simple ECM waveforms are required) C Effectiveness against last generation seeker, HOJ, etc C Capable of achieving large miss distance without cooperating maneuvering. D Limited ERP: exhibit limitations in protecting high RCS platforms like HELO s D Limited number of cartridge for a given mission D Deep Coordination required with the on- board Self Protection system (RWR&ECM) via EW Manager EAD for Helo Self- Protection Pag. 11 Pag. 11
Combined ON&OFF board ECM for HELO Protection The combined use of ON and OFF board ECM techniques enables the capability to protect medium to large Radar Cross Section (RCS) platforms using simple ECM waveforms: 1) ON Board Jammer for Threat Range/Velocity Seduction 2) Subsequent OFF Board Jammer for Real Angle Seduction (no RCS competition anymore) Validated in live trials Patent pending Pag. 12 Pag. 12
Conclusions Achieved Objectives ü ELT demonstrated the effectiveness of a combined approach between ON and OFF- board jammers. ü This concept allows to overcome typical limitations that both self protection jammers as well as expendables exhibit when operating in stand alone mode. Advantages & Benefits ü The solution is more robust and effective than conventional stand alone solutions ü The combined use of ON and OFF board ECM, can provide an unique and effective self protection solution for all the operational situations ü The solution is applicable for a wide type of HELO platforms and installations. ü HELO platforms already equipped with ON board self protection jamming systems can further take advantage of the cooperation concept with no need of major modifications Pag. 13 Pag. 13
