Report of the 30 th September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2012 19-25 Sept 2012 at Hong Kong This year UBM Asia celebrated 30 th year of the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair at Hong Kong for serving the world s jewellery industry. This show was started in a hotel ballroom in Hong Kong with 100 exhibitors, now host more than 3500 exhibitors spread over 190000 sq.mts. With the host city of Hong Kong being a duty-free port, there are no duties or restrictions imposed on precious jewellery products or materials. This has proven to be advantageous for international jewellers; it encourages worldwide trade with the region and makes the prices of goods more competitive. September is a peak season for the jewellery trade, as almost tens of thousands of professional jewellery buyers assembles to the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair to do business. Now recognised as the world s No. 1 business-to-business marketplace for the gem and jewellery sector, the September Fair gathers more than 51,000 buyers and more than 3,500 exhibitors from around the world in two world-class venues: the Asia-World-Expo (AWE) and the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The Fair at Asia-World Expo (AWE) featured around 1,600 exhibitors
from the world, who exhibited jewellery raw materials, including loose diamonds, gemstones, pearls, and packaging, tools & equipment. The Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre is dedicated to showcasing fine finished jewellery with gemstones, diamonds, pearls, jade and jadeite. Around 1,900 fine jewellery exhibitors from around the world will occupy the various themed halls. The September Fair is the ideal platform for the jewellery industry for many reasons: CLEAR PRODUCT SECTORISATION FACILITATES BUSINESS: Under this product sectorisation initiative, diamonds, gemstones, pearls, equipment & packaging products are exhibited at AWE, while finished jewellery items are exhibited at HKCEC. With products under the same category displayed in a common area, buyers find it easier to source products and suppliers, while exhibitors find it easier to meet their target buyers UNPARALLELED INTERNATIONAL STATUS: Over 50 percent of buyers at the September Fair are from overseas, a testament to the strong reputation the Fair enjoys globally. TIMELY EVENT: The Fair s September schedule makes it ideal for jewellers replenishing stocks for peak shopping seasons such as Christmas, New Year and Valentine s Day.

This year India Pavilion consisted of 95 exhibitors / 125 booths with 1207.5 sqm at Asia World Expo and HKCEC, at Hong Kong. Further, to the MOU signed between Ministry of Tourism & GJEPC undertaking joint promotional campaign and activities in the International and domestic markets. As per the MOU, GJEPC suggested participation of the Ministry of Tourism in the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair 2012, held from September 19-25, 2012, to undertake following sponsorship items during the show: HKCEC Side Glass Escalator Advertising HKCEC Silver Flat Escalator Advertising HKCEC 5 in 1 light boxes (level 5) HKCEC 3 in 1 light boxes (level 3) Promotional Booths at AWE & HKCEC Council had a promotional booth of 9 sqm at Hall no.10 of AWE BOOTH NO.10 U19, which was used as office as well as business center for the exhibitors. And the India Gallery was utilized for the promotion of Signature 2013 & IIJS 2013 as well as for the meetings with various overseas organizations. Made provision to register overseas buyers at the Council's booth at both the venues.

In addition to groups from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre and the Israel Diamond Institute, the pavilion featured a group of diamond exhibitors from the United States and the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India. The largest overseas pavilion Thailand Thailand s position as a gemstone trading hub and a leading producer of jewellery is evident in the active participation of exhibitors from the kingdom. Every year, Thailand is the largest overseas pavilion. This year, 383 Thai companies are exhibiting in two venues. Thai exhibitors showcased a full range of coloured gemstones, finished fine jewellery and silver jewellery. Strong participation of group pavilions The Fair unveiled at this edition Poland Pavilion, bringing to 22 the total number of group pavilions at the show. The rest are: Antwerp, Brazil,
China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United States, and the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA). This year, there were over 1,380 Hong Kong companies participating at two venues, all ready to show the strength of Hong Kong as jewellery centre. These esteemed exhibitors bring to the city exquisite jewellery set with luxurious and rare diamonds, gemstones and pearls, as well as top-quality bejewelled watches, invaluable antique and estate jewellery and other timepieces and exclusive one-offs from around the world. Such masterpieces surely captivate traders and connoisseurs alike. Hong Kong Premier Pavilion: An esteemed venue for Hong Kong avant-garde jewellers, this is the perfect stage to show what Hong Kong has to offer to the world s luxury markets as a jewellery powerhouses. Located in Halls 1D & 1E of the HKCEC, the pavilion features 40 of Hong Kong s finest home-
grown jewellery brands and delivers a stylish and elegant statement that reflects the very best of Hong Kong s jewellery manufacturing tradition. International Premier Pavilion: This pavilion was a stylish showcase of the world s cutting-edge designs. Visitors to the International Premier Pavilion found an unparalleled selection of stylish, high-quality jewellery brands from around the world. Located in Halls 3B & 3C, this distinguished pavilion was a stylish venue featuring 67 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions, namely, Australia, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Macau, Philippines, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, UK, United Arab Emirates and USA. Designer s Avenue The Designer Avenue was tailor-made for designers to launch their jewellery onto the world stage. Located in Mezzanine 2 of the HKCEC, Designer Avenue featured jewellery designers who had showcased the world their original creations. Pearl Jewellery & Finished Jewellery Pearl Jewellery & Finished Jewellery section showcases freshwater pearl jewellery and gem-set jewellery. Jadeite Gallery Flawless and perfect grade A jadeite products from renowned suppliers were on display at the Jadeite Gallery at the Hall 1A concourse, giving traders and collectors a dedicated area where they could view and buy products with ease. International Jewellery, Antique & Fine Vintage Jewellery International Fine Jewellery, Antique & Vintage Jewellery section was a graceful showcase of an extensive collection of antique & vintage jewellery from various parts of the world.
Silver Jewellery Pavilion The Silver Jewellery Pavilion is the answer to the needs of silver jewellery buyers. Located in Halls 5B, 5C, 5D & Mezzanine 4 of the HKCEC, the pavilion showcases sterling silver jewellery from exhibitors from around the world. FOLLOWING MEETINGS WERE HELD DURING THE SHOW 1. Meeting with Consul General- Indian Embassy at Hong Kong: Mr. Vikrant Pradhan- Asst. Director- GJEPC, visited Indian Embassy at Wanchai, Hong Kong and invited Mr. Chander Bhan- Consul, to the India pavilion at AWE & CEC. 2. Meeting with Mr. Martin Fergusson Show Director, Basel-World 2013. Following points were discussed : a. Location for India Pavilion at Hall no.4 during Basel-World 2013, for which Mr. Fergusson said that they would get back to us by end of October 2012 with their plans. b. India Palace at Hall no.2: Due to paucity of space, Mr. Fergusson was not sure that they would be able to provide the space for India Palace during 2013. However they will get back to us on the same along with the location for India Pavilion 3. Meeting with PICO IES: Met Mr. Archie Chow- Project Manager, to discuss and understand about system of working, cost of production etc., which will enable Council to organise strategies in future. 4. Director Exhibitions Ms. Naheed Sunke, Sr. Manager - Exhibitions During the Meeting Council requested for more space at Loose Diamond Section- approx. 300 sqm as well as Gem stone Section 500-600 sqm. On which the organizers would get back to us by December 2012. INDIA SHOW: Chairman briefed UBM Asia about the India Show concept and informed that Council is interested in organising it during Sept 2013 show. UBM Asia appreciated the idea of holding the India Show during Sept 2013, and requested to send report of India Show and the substances to study the same and then accordingly forward the proposal. For June Hong Kong Jewellery Show 2013: Council requested UBM for more space and better location for India pavilions at all the sections ie., loose diamonds, gemstones, fine jewellery etc., UBM offered 145 sqm at the concourse of Hall no.5fg, for which Council said that they would get back to them after internal discussion. The above space would be confirmed only if the allotted location to the India Pavilion is favorable for the exhibitors, for which the organizers agreed. 5. Meeting was held with HKTDC to discuss future strategy for forthcoming March Hong Kong 2013 Hong Kong March 2013: Council requested HKTDC for the following space: 1. Gemstones to re-shift from existing semi- precious stone section to precious stone section with more area, for which they agreed and assured that they will shift them to precious stone hall which is in
the loose diamond hall, but will get back to us latest by November 2012 2. Apprx 500 600 sqm instead of 450 sqm at finished jewellery section : They will check the availability and would get back 3. Effective Promotion of India Diamond Hall at Meeting Room NO.201: Council requested to undertake following effective promotional measures of the India Diamond Hall : Signages at entrance of Expo Drive & Harbour Rd stating more Indian Diamond Exhibitors at Meeting Room No 201 Display board at Hall no.3 E stating more Indian Exhibitors at Meeting Room No 201 Hostesses with display board at all the levels of the venue Signages from level one to M2 till the Meeting Room of India Diamond Pavilion 4. Sponsorship items 5. India Gallery during the show: Council insisted on having the similar India gallery at the March Hong Kong 2013 and requested them to allot the same area as of Sept 2012, for which HKTDC would get back to us. 6. Meeting with HKTDC Stand Contractor Agency: Council met Mr. Kam Wong, informed them about the following issues faced by the exhibitors during the show: a. Yellow lights should be of same watts as per white halogens lights b. At few booths panels were not cleaned, for which Mr. Wong informed that once the exhibitors occupies the booth, then their staff do not enter the booth, unless exhibitor request them to do so. As such, next time we have to inform exhibitors that they should inform the contractors to clean their booths in their presences c. More lights on the India Pavilion towers: For which Mr. Wong agreed upon. d. India Gallery Showcases were stored with HKTDC, so that it can reused during next March & Sept Show.
7. Meeting with MIJ Exhibition Co. Ltd: Ms. Trya Guo MKTG & Communication officer, the organisers of Malaysia Intl Jewellery Festival, introduced their 20th Malaysia International Jewellery Festival 2013 during 19th April to 22th April 2013 and 21st during 11th October to 14th October & proposed that GJEPC & MIJ may cooperate with each other in two aspects as partners in their respective exhibitions. Ms. Guo also informed that effective from 2011, Malaysia government has imposed duty and tax free policy on jewellery. This policy has successfully transformed Malaysia to be a duty-free shopping paradise locally and internationally.
