790 Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide NOTES TO EDUCATOR: 1. Review chapter, entire lesson plan, and Milady Standard Cosmetology Instructor Support Slides prior to lesson. 2. Review Learning Reinforcement ideas/activities and predetermine which are to be used. 3. Check the projector to ensure it is working properly. 4. Gather all materials and supplies needed for demonstrations prior to starting class. 5. Have students sign in for class and document attendance based on your school s procedure. 6. During the instructor preparation time and while students are entering and getting settled for the class, have the first Milady Standard Cosmetology Instructor Support Slide containing the inspirational quote projected (or write it on the board or flip chart). This will help get instructors and students into the appropriate mind-set for learning and for the day. 7. SPECIAL NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: There are eight practical procedures covered in this lesson plan. The procedure sheets that may be used as handouts for the students appear after the Learning Reinforcement Ideas and Activities located in this lesson plan. Hand the sheets out and have the students follow along as you review each procedure. Have the students put the sheets away when you begin your demonstration or present the applicable Milady Standard Cosmetology DVD for more consistency as the handouts will be a distraction to the demonstration. 8. The information found in this lesson correlates to the information found in Chapter 27 of Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide, 2008 edition. LEARNING MOTIVATION (WHY?) Inspirational Thought for the Day: Whether you think you can or whether you think you can t, you re right. Henry Ford The cosmetology industry experienced great expansion when the first acrylic artificial nail extensions were introduced in the 1970s. By the 1980s, manufacturers had developed products which created very natural-looking artificial nails. It was at that time that the nail industry became the fastest growing area in the entire field of cosmetology, and it is still growing today. The professionals who fine tune their skills with artificial nails earn a very good income. In today s lesson, we will explore the various techniques and procedures used to apply natural-looking artificial nail enhancements. These procedures are beneficial to those individuals who cannot grow strong natural nails of the desired length. Artificial nails may be used to: 1. Mend or conceal broken or damaged nails. 2. Improve the appearance of very short or badly shaped nails. 3. Help overcome the habit of nail biting. 4. Protect a nail or nails against splitting or breakage. Advanced nail techniques such as wrapping with linen, silk, or fiberglass can be used over natural nails just to make them stronger as well.

Tab 8 Lesson 27.0 791 PRESENTATION OF THE SKILLS AND/OR INFORMATION LESSON PLAN 27.0 SUBJECT OUTLINE IN-DEPTH NOTES (Information to share during presentation) OPENING ACTIVITY: Divide the class into groups of three to five students. Have students brainstorm about all the common problems they can think of that are associated with wearing artificial nails (for example: lifting, breaking, peeling, etc.) Ask for a volunteer scribe to come to the front and record the group s findings on the board or a flip chart. Be sure to reward your volunteer with a token of appreciation. I. ADVANCED NAIL TECHNIQUES One of the first things we notice about someone is her hands and fingernails. With the technology of the 21st century, there is no reason for anyone to have unattractive nails. There are many ways that you, as a practitioner, can help your clients have better looking hands. A. NAIL TIPS A nail tip is a plastic, pre-molded nail shaped from a tough polymer made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Tips are often used with another service such as a wrap or overlay. An overlay is any kind of nail enhancement that is applied over the tip for strength. B. MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES The following items will be needed in addition to the regular materials on a manicuring table. 1. Abrasive board This is a rough surface used to shape or smooth the nail and to remove the shine. The finish is like an emery board but can be any shape or color. 2. Buffer block Lightweight rectangular block that is abrasive and used to buff nails 3. Tip adhesive Glue or bonding agent used to secure the tip to the natural nail; it comes in tubes, one-drop applicators, or brush-on containers and in different viscosities (thickness). Gelled adhesives are the thickest and require more drying time. 4. Tip cutter An implement similar to a nail clipper designed for use on nail tips. 5. Nail dehydrator This is a substance used to remove surface moisture and tiny amounts of oil left on the natural nail plate. See Figure 27 1 in the Milady Standard Cosmetology textbook. 6. Nail tips Tips have a well that serves as the point of contact with the nail plate. The position stop is the point where the free edge of the natural nail meets the tip. See Figure 27 2.

792 Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide SUBJECT OUTLINE IN-DEPTH NOTES (Information to share during presentation) a. Full well b. Partial well c. Well-less Tips come in an assortment of sizes and shapes to fit clients precisely. II. NAIL WRAPS A method of securing a layer of fabric or paper on and around the nail tip or natural nail to ensure its strength and durability A. NAIL WRAP RESIN This is used to coat and secure fabric wraps to the natural nail or tip. Resins are made from cyanoacrylate, a specialized acrylic monomer that has excellent adhesion properties. B. FABRIC WRAPS Fabric wraps are the most popular because of their durability. Wraps are cut to cover the natural nail and tip and are laid onto a layer of wrap resin to build and strengthen the enhancement. 1. Silk Thin natural material with a tight weave that becomes transparent when resin is applied; light weight with a smooth appearance 2. Linen Closely woven, heavy material; resins do not penetrate it easily. Colored polish is required due to its opaque nature. It is considered the strongest wrap fabric. 3. Fiberglass This is a very thin synthetic mesh with a loose weave. It is not as strong as linen or silk; when combined with an adhesive, it creates a durable nail enhancement. 4. Paper wraps They are made from very thin paper. They don t have the strength or durability of wrap fabric; this is considered a temporary service. 5. Wrap resin accelerators These are also known as activators. They act as the dryer that speeds up the hardening process of the wrap resin or adhesive overlay. They come in brushon, pump spray-on, and aerosol. 6. Miscellaneous tools These include wrap resin, a nail buffer and file, small scissors, plastic, and tweezers. Option: Dip Powder and Adhesive Enhancements may be used for strength and wearability. III. NAIL WRAP MAINTENANCE, Nail wraps must have consistent maintenance after REPAIR, AND REMOVAL the initial application. A. MAINTENANCE This is the term used for when the enhancement needs to be serviced after two or more weeks from the initial application. 1. To fill or backfill Application of the product on new growth only 2. Structurally correct nail To ensure strength, shape, and durability; commonly referred to as a rebalance

Tab 8 Lesson 27.0 793 SUBJECT OUTLINE IN-DEPTH NOTES (Information to share during presentation) B. FABRIC WRAP REPAIR Small pieces of fabric can be used to strengthen a weak point in the nail or to repair a break in the nail. 1. Stress strip Strip of fabric cut to 1 /8 inch (.3 cm) in length and applied to the weak point during the Four-Week Wrap Maintenance procedure 2. Repair patch This piece of fabric is cut to completely cover a crack or break in the nail. Follow the Four-Week Wrap Maintenance procedure. C. FABRIC WRAP REMOVAL Wraps must be removed carefully to avoid damage to the nail plate. The entire enhancement is immersed into a small glass bowl filled with acetone. The wrap melts away and then the softened material is gently slid away from the nail with a wooden pusher. A manicure should follow wrap removal to rehydrate the nail and cuticle. IV. PRACTICAL PROCEDURES A. PRE-SERVICE PROCEDURE 25 1 B. POST-SERVICE PROCEDURE 25 2 C. NAIL TIP APPLICATION P 27 1 D. NAIL TIP REMOVAL P 27 2 E. NAIL WRAP APPLICATION P 27 3 F. TWO-WEEK WRAP MAINTENANCE P 27 4 G. FOUR-WEEK WRAP MAINTENANCE P 27 5 H. FABRIC WRAP REMOVAL P 27 6 NOTE: Explain to students when the Practical Class will occur (perhaps now) and that you will hand out procedure sheets for each of the following procedures and they will follow along as you review the steps. They will put away the sheets during the actual demonstration, either performed by you or by the applicable Milady DVD (to ensure consistency between demonstrations). The standard preand post-service procedures are not duplicated in this lesson plan.

794 Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide SUMMARY AND REVIEW Nail tips are a great way for clients to wear long and glamorous-looking nails. Due to the nature of the procedure, numerous follow-up maintenance services are needed and result in return business and increased revenue for the practitioner. Care should be taken throughout the procedure to avoid damage to the natural nail. LET S REVIEW: 1. What are the supplies, in addition to your basic manicuring table, that you need for nail tip application? Answer: The supplies needed for nail tip applications are abrasive boards, a buffer block, nail tip adhesive, nail tips, a tip cutter, and nail dehydrator. 2. What are the types of nail tips available and why is it important to properly fit them for your client? Answer: The nail tips available are partial well, full well, and well-less. Tips that do not cover the natural nail from sidewall to sidewall can cause the tip to crack at the sides or split down the middle. 3. What types of fabrics are used in nail wraps? Answer: The three types of fabric nail wraps are silk, linen, and fiberglass. 4. What are the benefits of using each of these types of fabric wraps? Answer: Silk becomes transparent when resin is applied; it is lightweight and has a smooth appearance. Linen is heavier and thicker and, therefore, is the strongest wrap fabric. Fiberglass is easy to use and easy for an adhesive to penetrate, which improves adhesion; it becomes durable with the resin activator. 5. Describe the stop, rock, and hold method of applying nail tips. Answer: The steps of the method are: Find the stop against free edge at 45-degree angle. Rock the tip on slowly. Hold the tip in place 5 10 seconds until the adhesive has hardened. 6. Describe the Nail Tip Application Procedure. Answer: The steps of the Nail Tip Application Procedure are: pre-service, remove polish, push back the eponychium, remove the cuticle tissue, buff the natural nail to remove shine, size the tips, apply dehydrator, apply adhesive, slide on the tips, trim the nail tip, blend the tip, shape the nail, and proceed with the desired service. 7. Describe the Nail Tip Removal Procedure. Answer: The steps in the Nail Tip Removal Procedure are: soak the tips in acetone, slide off the tips with a wooden pusher, and buff the nail. 8. Describe the Nail Wrap Application Procedure. Answer: The steps in the Nail Wrap Application procedure are: pre-service, remove polish, clean the nails, push back the eponychium, remove the oily shine, apply dehydrator, apply nail tips if desired, cut adhesive-backed fabric and apply it to the nail, apply wrap resin, trim the fabric, apply wrap resin, apply wrap resin activator, apply a second coat of wrap resin and a second coat of resin activator, shape and refine the nails, buff the wrapped nail, remove traces of oil, and apply polish. 9. What is the main difference between performing the Two-Week Fabric Wrap Maintenance and the Four-Week Fabric Wrap Maintenance? Answer: At the Two-Week Fabric Wrap Maintenance service, the nails are buffed and wrap resin is applied to regrowth area and the entire nail. At Four-Week Fabric Wrap Maintenance service, all steps in the two-week maintenance are completed, plus wrap fabric is cut and applied to the regrowth area (slightly overlapping old wrap fabric). 10. Describe how to remove fabric wraps and what to avoid. Answer: The steps to remove fabric wraps are: pre-service, soak the nails in acetone, slide off the softened nail wraps with a wooden pusher, buff the natural nail, and condition the skin. Avoid damaging the nail plate.

796 Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide NAIL TIP PROCEDURES NAIL TIP APPLICATION: PROCEDURE 27 1 IMPLEMENTS AND MATERIALS Basic manicure materials and table, abrasive boards, buffer block, nail dehydrator, nail tip adhesive, nail tips, tip cutter Perform standard pre-service procedure. 1. Remove polish. Clean the nails and remove existing polish. 2. Push back the eponychium. Use a cotton-tipped wooden stick or pusher to gently push back the cuticle. Use a light touch because the cuticle is dry no solvent. 3. Remove cuticle tissue. Use cuticle remover and a wooden or metal pusher/curette. Carefully remove the cuticle tissue from the nail plate. 4. Buff the nail/remove shine. Buff lightly over the nail plate with medium/fine (240 grit or higher) abrasive to remove natural oil and contaminants. Remove the dust with a nail brush. 5. Apply dehydrator. Use a cotton-tipped wooden pusher or spray to apply dehydrator/cleanser to nails. It will remove more of the natural oil and dehydrate the nail for better adhesion. 6. Size the tips. Completely cover the nail plate from sidewall to sidewall. Place the tips on a towel in order of application. 7. Apply adhesive. Place on the nail plate to cover the area where the tip will be placed. Do not let it run on the skin; apply from the middle of the nail to the free edge. If using a thin brush-on adhesive, cover the entire nail, then press the tip into it. 8. Slide on the tips. Stop, Rock, and Hold. Stop find the stop against the free edge at a 45-degree angle. Rock rock the tip on slowly. Hold hold it in place firmly for 5 10 seconds. 9. Trim the nail tip. Trim it to the desired length with a tip cutter or large nail clippers. 10. Finish blending. Use a medium to fine grit file or buffing block (180 grit or higher) to carefully smooth the contact area down until it is flush with the natural nail. Never hold the file at an angle as it may damage the nail plate. Remove shine from the remainder of the tip. 11. Shape the nail. Use an abrasive to shape the new, longer nail. 12. Proceed with service. Apply wraps, acrylics, or UV gels. Perform standard post-service procedure. LP 27.0, P 27 1

Tab 8 Lesson 27.0 797 TIP REMOVAL: PROCEDURE P 27 2 IMPLEMENTS AND MATERIALS Basic manicure materials and table, buffer block, small glass bowl, tip remover solution or acetone Perform standard pre-service procedure. 1. Soak the tips and nails. Place acetone in a small glass bowl; soak a few minutes. 2. Slide off the tip. Use a pusher to slide off the softened nail tip. Do not pry it off as it could cause damage to the nail unit. 3. Buff the nail. Gently buff the natural nail with a fine block buffer to remove adhesive residue. 4. Reapply nail tips. Follow the routine for nail tip application. 5. Perform the desired service. Perform standard post-service procedure. LP 27.0, P 27 2

798 Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide NAIL WRAP APPLICATION: PROCEDURE P 27 3 MATERIALS AND IMPLEMENTS Basic manicure materials and table, adhesive-backed fabric, nail buffer, small piece of plastic, small scissors, tweezers (optional), wrap resin, wrap resin accelerator Perform standard pre-service procedure. 1. Remove existing polish. 2. Push back the eponychium and remove the cuticle. 3. Remove the oily shine. Lightly buff the nail plate with a medium/fine abrasive (240 grit) to remove shine caused by the oil found in the natural nail plate. Do not use a coarse file and be careful not to apply very much pressure. Remove only the oily shine and avoid removing layers off the natural nail plate. Nail wraps can be performed over natural nails or over a set of nail tips. If using nail tips, use an abrasive to shape the free edges of the natural nails to match the shape of the nail tip stop point. Remove dust with a clean, dry, disinfected nail brush. 4. Apply nail dehydrator. Spray or wipe a nail dehydrator onto the nail plates to remove moisture and natural oil from surface. 5. Apply nail tips if desired. 6. Cut the fabric. Cut the fabric to the approximate width and shape of the nail plate or nail tip. 7. Apply a layer of wrap resin. Apply a layer over the entire surface of the nail and tip. Keep adhesive off the skin, which can damage skin and cause the wrap to lift or separate. Begin with the pinky finger of the left hand and apply wrap resin to all 10 fingers. 8. Apply the fabric. Remove backing from the fabric and gently fit the fabric over the nail plate, 1 /16 inch away from the sidewall and eponychium. Press to smooth it on to the nail plate, using a small piece of thick plastic. 9. Trim fabric. Use small scissors to trim fabric 1 /16 inch (1.5 mm) away from the sidewalls and the free edge to prevent fabric from lifting and separating from the nail plate. 10. Apply wrap resin. Draw a thin coat of wrap resin down the center of the nail using the extender tip. Do not touch the skin. The adhesive will penetrate the fabric and adhere to the nail surface. Use the plastic again to make sure resin is evenly distributed without bubbles or areas of bare fabric. 11. Apply wrap resin accelerator. Spray, brush, or drop on wrap resin accelerator designed for the wrap resin of your choice. Use according to the wrap resin manufacturer s instructions. Keep wrap resin accelerator off skin to prevent overexposure to the product. 12. Apply a second coat of wrap resin. Apply and spread wrap resin with an extender tip. Seal the free edge with wrap resin by running the extender tip on the edge of the nail tip to prevent any lifting. 13. Apply a second coat of wrap resin accelerator. 14. Shape and refine the nails. Use a medium/fine abrasive (240 grit) to shape and refine the wrap nail. 15. Buff the wrapped nail. Apply nail oil and buff the nails to a high shine with a fine (350 grit or higher) buffer. Use the buffer to smooth out rough areas in the fabric. Do not buff excessively or for too long to wear through or weaken the wrap. 16. Massage the hand and arm. Apply hand lotion and perform a hand and arm massage. 17. Remove traces of oil. Send your client to thoroughly wash at the sink with a nail brush, liquid soap, and warm running water to remove not only oils, but any dust or other contaminants. 18. Apply polish. Perform standard post-service procedure. LP 27.0, P 27 3

Remove existing polish. Use a non-acetone polish remover to avoid damaging nail wraps. 2. Clean the natural nails. 3. Push back the eponychium. 4. Lightly buff the nail plate to remove oily shine. 5. Apply nail dehydrator. Remove dust with a nail brush before applying dehydrator. 6. Apply wrap resin to new nail growth area. Brush on or apply a small amount of wrap resin to the area of new nail growth. Spread the resin with the extender tip, taking care to avoid touching the skin. 7. Apply wrap resin accelerator. Follow the manufacturer s instructions. 8. Apply wrap resin to the entire nail plate. Apply a second coat of wrap resin to the entire nail plate to strengthen and reseal the nail wrap. 9. Apply a second coat of wrap resin accelerator. 10. Shape and refine the nail wrap. Use a medium/fine abrasive over the surface of the nail wrap to remove any high spots and/or other imperfections. 11. Buff nail wraps. Apply nail oil and buff to a high shine with the fine buffer (350 grit or higher). 12. Apply hand lotion and massage the hand and arm. 13. Remove traces of oil. Use a small piece of cotton or plastic-backed cotton pad to remove all traces of oil from the nail so the polish will adhere. 14. Apply polish. Perform standard post-service procedure. LP 27.0, P 27 4

800 Milady Standard Cosmetology Course Management Guide FOUR-WEEK FABRIC WRAP MAINTENANCE: PROCEDURE 27-5 IMPLEMENTS AND MATERIALS Basic manicure materials and table, abrasive buffer or file, adhesive-backed fabric, small piece of plastic, small scissors, tweezers (optional), wrap resin, wrap resin accelerator Perform standard pre-service procedure. 1. Remove existing polish. Use a non-acetone polish remover to avoid damaging wraps. 2. Clean the nails. Use a nail brush, liquid soap, and warm running water. 3. Push back the eponychium. 4. Buff the nail to remove shine. Lightly buff the nail plates with a medium/fine (240 grit) abrasive to remove the shine created by natural oil and also to remove any small pieces of fabric that may have lifted since the last service. Buff the end of the wrap until smooth, without scratching or damaging the natural nail plate. Carefully refine the nail until there is no obvious line of demarcation between the new growth and the fabric wrap Avoid damaging the natural nail with the abrasive. Do not file into the natural nail surface. 5. Apply nail dehydrator. Remove dust with a brush. Apply nail dehydrator to the with a cottontipped wooden pusher, cotton pad with a plastic backing, brush, or spray. Begin with the little finger on the left hand and work toward the thumb. 6. Cut the fabric. Cut a piece of fabric large enough to cover the new growth area and slightly overlap the old wrap fabric. 7. Apply wrap resin to new the growth area. Apply a small amount of wrap resin to the fill area. Spread throughout the new growth area with the extender tip or fill in the area with brush-on adhesive. Be careful to avoid touching the skin. 8. Apply the fabric. Gently fit the fabric over the new growth area and smooth. 9. Apply wrap resin. Apply another small amount of wrap resin, again avoiding the skin. 10. Apply wrap resin accelerator. Spray, brush, or drop accelerator on the wrap resin to dry it more quickly. Use as instructed by the manufacturer of the wrap resin accelerator. 11.
