OBSESSED A BOX COLLECTIVE PRODUCTION

! The box is an international artistic collective established to explore and present new and emerging theatre work that blurs the line between art and performance. Where the goal is to break down the barrier between performer and audience and in doing so create an immersive performance experience. The objective is the creation of living art that allows an audience to exist within the production and thus in turn be changed by the experience. The box is a collective company run by women that originated as an ensemble in New York City. Consisting of artists who hunger to challenge the traditional theatre scene and engage their audience through a real experience, our work evokes visceral reactions beyond passive entertainment. From the beginning, the vision of the box was to create a company that would perform not only in New York, but take this approach to theatre around the world. In the past few years we ve forged international relationships and throughout Europe and New York and we continue to grow into new territories both artistically and geographically. Our first piece, La Cueca premiered in the Hamptons and in New York s Chelsea Art Museum to critical acclaim. Our most recent work, The Stadt Elegies toured through Italy in the Summer of 2015 and was performed at Biennale di Venezia and in esteemed galleries during the Milan Expo. This is theatre of immediacy, necessity and risk-taking. Beginning from an organic creative process, the ensemble works together to create a holistic performance experience. This is theatre that comes from a question and a need to know.

The Project We are currently developing Obsessed with an international team of award-winning artists. Obsessed is a story about lies. In the world of today, with all the entangled webs, one lie does not only lead to another, it can actually turn into reality. Manipulation, distortion and gas lighting have become useful and valuable tools whenever a private or public opinion is about to be shaped. How is it possible that the more we know the more we seem to be prone to lies? Is it because the truth is often very painful? Is it because a certain distortion of reality lets us get away with horrible things? Or could it be that in reality truth does not exist and therefore neither do lies? Obsessed deals with different situations which are decisively shaped by lies and our willingness to belief in them. Illusion and truth, the struggle for possession, manipulation and revelation are the topics of the three parts. Three women are confronted with or exercise mental, physical and intellectual corruption of various kinds. However, this project will not be offering any solutions or even claim to be morally right. Any consensus will be avoided at any price. The audience is being played as well, as, eventually, massive doubts about the action and the talk on stage is supposed to unfold. Although it is quite clear, that actors can t be trusted after all, this project uses and abuses all the methods of modern manipulation in public, private and self-deception.

The Press The Box Collective is a true discovery of the Berlin Art scene -ArtiBerlin

Press Quotes From their wounds, we are left feeling the liberation of three strong women in search of themselves and tougher skin, while we (as audience) simultaneously experience a diverse form of art in which innovation goes hand in hand with creative aesthetics -ArtiBerlin Recalling the surrealism and paranoia of the relationship conveyed in the works of the Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier, the piece also evokes Richard Yates and his theme of middle class ennui- a marriage troubled by infidelity and plagued by infertility but perhaps more important, an unnerving sense of entrapment. -East Hampton Star Forgiveness we learn, is not always a simple choice, or even a choice at all. It is sometimes thrust upon us, wether we accept it or not. -East Hampton Star The play owes a debt to playwrights including Beckett and Pinter, who frequently employed metaphor and economy of language -The New York Times
