North Devon Arts building the arts in north devon This year sees a change in the annual NDA Winter exhibition at Broomhill; three exhibitions will take place, with each artist curating their own allocated space. Exhibitors will be expected to help publicise their own preview & show. 15th January - The First Private View of the NDA Winter Exhibition. 5th February - The Second Private View of the NDA Annual Winter Exhibition. NEW YEAR - NEW WORK 15th January - 18th March 2006 NEW YEAR - NEW WORK 3 periods of 3 weeks with 3 different groups of Artists in each of the exhibitions. Broomhill opens to the public 11.00am - 4.00pm on Wednesdays Sundays. For more details see page 5 26th February - The Third Private View of the NDA Winter Exhibition. All three exhibitions are in the main gallery, with viewing from 2.30pm. For a Broomhill lunch prior to the openings,. Events Diary for 2006 NDA Meetings - 2nd Wednesday of the Month January An open forum session on different processes of writing, to be hosted by Laura Summers, who writes for children s TV and Veronica Henry who writes women s commercial fiction and TV. This is an opportunity to gain an insight into the disciplines of writing for a living. During this session we will explore the possibilities of NDA compiling and publishing an anthology of short stories and poems written by its members and inspired by North Devon. For Broomhill buffet this evening, please contact John Wright, 01237 424522 or; jpandswright@tiscali.co.uk February Bring an object that inspires you. This can be anything from a newspaper cutting to a stuffed armadillo. David Chilton will introduce and initiate this evening s proceedings. March The NDA Winter Exhibitions and North Devon Open Show Come to hear the stories and inspirations behind these four North Devon exhibitions as the participating artists are invited to talk about their work. April - Lillian Sum talking about her ways of working. Lillian is an engaging, young community and sensory artist. She has a studio based at Tapely Park, Instow. The estate, owned and run by Hector Christie, is a developing community based on environmentally friendly lines, enabling the artists involved to pursue their wildest dreams and ideas! Working with communities as far apart in distance as well as lifestyles, from Devon to India, Lillian's work is about delivering projects on arts and sustainability, using art as the vehicle for delivering environmental awareness. May An update and presentation of Walk in the Woods (an NDA supported project). This project has been lead and conceived by Emily Garnham Wright whose work is inspired by the scenery of North Devon. Emily uses natural fibres to create an impression of contours, planes, horizons and distance. This piece is an interaction between Artists, the public and a wooded environment. June AGM. Have your say on the future organisation of NDA - if you want changes or have ideas, come along. July The NDA Summer Small Picture Show Share the stories and inspirations behind the exhibits, as participating artists are invited to talk about their work. The NDA summer show is held in conjunction with the North Devon Festival. August - No Event. September A chance to listen to Dinsdale Petch who runs Running Dog Bronze Foundry which is based in the heart of North Devon. He specialises in lost-wax bronze casting, a process where wax is replaced with molten bronze leaving an enduring sculpture. North Devon s landscape and tranquillity harmonises with centuries of bronze casting traditions and inspires the craft work of Dinsdale Petch. October & November Suggestions from members please. December Party.

EXHIBITION The Burton Gallery Christmas Open This is an annual event, with artists putting their work forward for selection by the friends of the Burton. There are quite a few NDA members with their work on show. Two that have contacted me are Angela Spanswick, trying out her change of style there for the first time and Joan Stribling de'launay showing a pencil drawing of Arlington Court. I did go to the opening, which was well supported but of course you can t see all the work and I just haven t had the time to visit again. It would be nice to know from members if they are exhibiting, what feedback they are getting and if they have sold. Stella Carol Mackenzie-Gale At The Burton I was moved to read the piece in the newsletter by Helen Latham, one incredible lady who attended my workshop at the Burton Gallery. What a joy she is. I must do more workshops to get the practice! I was absolutely exhausted at the end of it. Helen followed the programme beautifully but wow, what a day. She has so much enthusiasm a wonderful lady indeed. As I stood there, dishevelled, head dull from the stress of the day, scruffy, sweaty and struggling to pack up my masses of gear, a beautiful, sophisticated, attractive lady with coiffeured blonde hair came in nervously saying, Are you Carol? Yes, I am, I said and smiled. She was a Dr. from London who had just bought one of my scarves and she loved it, clutching it to her bosom. Her boyfriend, a surgeon, had bought it for her. Carol Mackenzie-Gale CALL FOR PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS Art Trek 06 - The North Devon answer to Open Studio Events January 06 newsletter Page 2 NDA January Meeting An open forum session on different processes of writing, to be hosted by Laura Summers, who writes for children s TV and Veronica Henry who writes women s commercial fiction and TV. This is an opportunity to gain an insight into the disciplines of writing for a living. The response after the October NDA meeting regarding producing a Poem/Short Story Book was excellent, so I think we have discovered an untapped resource. The NDA support for visual arts has always been strong and it was felt by the committee, time that members were offered opportunities to write! We all have a book in us, they say - NDA are suggesting just a short story or poem in response to living in North Devon! Work will be selected, quality material to ensure the public buy this publication and its look should be equal to professional standards. Let us know your thoughts on this. Peter B. art trek art trek art trek art trek art trek art trek Local Artists taking part welcome the public into their venues to have a cup of tea and a chat! The event gives artists the opportunity to invite their friends, neighbours, clients and the public to see how they produce their artwork. This is a friendly event with no emphases on buying - but who knows you could charm the pants off them! A full colour leaflet will be available locally, showing work by the artists involved, giving a directional map to each of their venues, plus Art Trek will be featured in the Festivals brochure, website and other related publicity. Also for the duration of the North Devon Festival, an exhibition at the Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple, will display one piece of work from every Art Trek Artist, signposting visitors to the different venues, and artists they like. Art trek will be held in conjunction with the North Devon Festival and will take place 16th - 19th June, 11.00am - 6.00pm. Local artists and makers interested in taking part in Art Trek 06, please contact; Stella Levy, Art Trek co-ordinator ; stella.levy@virgin.net

INFORMATION January 05 newsletter Page 3 4th North Devon Open Art Show 14th January - 18th February 2006 North Devon Arts & North Devon Museum Nine Bursaries to be given to selected artists! The selection committee of the 4 th North Devon Open Show has chosen the Artists that will exhibit at the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon and The Queens Theatre (14 th January 2006 18 th February 2006). The nine artists selected were; Dave Chilton, Kathryn Greenslade, Pete Newell, Kate Rowley, Jaz Jones, Ros Osbourn, Emily Garnham-Wright, Jon Gordon and Greg Ford. The response from North Devon Arts members was immense (the majority chosen are NDA members) - without your input the choice of Artists would have been greatly diminished and poorer. This year the selection was tougher simply because there were more entries. For those of us not chosen (this includes me) next year is only around the corner. Well done to NDA for supporting this event and making it a stronger and hopefully a bigger and better event in the future. January 05 newsletter Page 5 North Devon Arts: The New Artists Folio The NDA folio that was set up to support the past couple of exhibitions has been well used by visitors to Broomhill and is now in need of replacement and updating. The original folio was only intended to support an exhibition and consequently did not reflect the full membership of artists and craftspeople. It has been decided therefore to update the folio to meet the following purposes. It should: Reflect the work of any member who wishes to be represented in the folio; Be used by the NDA committee and Broomhill to promote the quality of the membership when working with other local arts organisations; Be available at Broomhill for hotel visitors for potential commissions as well as general interest; Automatically support all NDA members exhibiting at Broomhill; To encourage new members. Guidance for completing the Artist s Portfolio Each artist will have two facing pages in an alphabetically organised folio. The first page will be standard for everyone and the second page will be up to each artist to design a page that presents some images that reflect their work. Artists will be able to change their pages as appropriate and will be reminded of doing so when paying their annual subscription. It is intended that the new portfolio will be introduced at the same time as the new exhibition in January 2006 and we would be grateful if you complete your entries for pages one and two before the opening of the exhibition in January. If at all possible please use the standard page one included in this newsletter and Email it to John Wright at jpandswright@tiscali.co.uk when complete. This will register your place in the portfolio. Please also send/email your personally completed page two and a paper copy of your page one to: NDA, for attention of John Wright c/o Broomhill Art Hotel Muddiford, Barnstaple Devon. EX31 4EZ If you do not have access to Email please send your handwritten pages 1 and 2 to John Wright at the above address. The final paper pages may be delivered to Broomhill when delivering your work for the New Year, New Work exhibition. The NDA Artist Profile pages can be downloaded from; www.pagemonger.com/profile.doc
