Your visit includes an audioguide available in 12 different languages and the opportunity to try on replica historical dresses, coats, corsets and hats. We recommend you allow at least an hour to enjoy the two exhibitions and Dress of the Year on display in the Museum. In addition to the unique collection, we also offer a varied events programme. This includes evening talks on different aspects of fashion history and creative family activities in school holidays. We are also home to the Bath branch of the Knitting and Crochet Guild. Until 1 January 2019 5 A History of Fashion in 100 Objects The Fashion Museum Bath presents 100 star objects from its collection in the headline exhibition A History of Fashion in 100 Objects. Taken together, these objects showcase a history of fashion from the 1600s to the present day. Fashion touches everyone s life it is intrinsically linked to society and A History of Fashion in 100 Objects references moments in history, as well as more personal stories. Royal Women examines how these roles influenced their choice of dress. Exhibition highlights include Alexandra, Princess of Wales wedding dress, dating from 1863, on loan from the Royal Collection, generously lent by Her Majesty The Queen. Also on display is an ensemble of gold and turquoise velvet, worn by Queen Mary to the wedding of her granddaughter, Princess Elizabeth in 1947. A selection of royal accessories complement the fashions presented in the exhibition. Items of dress belonging to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother include an oyster silk satin ball gown from 1954. Dresses worn by The Queen s sister, Princess Margaret, show her glamorous side and her patronage of designers such as Christian Dior and Norman Hartnell. The stories behind the dresses and the choice of colour, cut or style can tell us much about Alexandra, Mary, Elizabeth, and Margaret, and how they chose to present themselves as royal women. Book at www.bathboxoffice.org.uk Royal Women: Her Majesty Queen Alexandra Thursday 1 February Dr Kate Strasdin, author of Inside the Royal Wardrobe: A Dress History of Queen Alexandra, and historical research consultant for the Royal Women exhibition at the Fashion Museum will share her on-going research into the wardrobe of Queen Alexandra (1844 1925). Jane Austen s Pelisse Thursday 15 February Hilary Davidson, dress and textile historian, will examine a silk pelisse (a kind of coat) dated circa 1812 1814, the only known garment associated with Jane Austen (1775 1817), now held by Hampshire Cultural Trust. Royal Women: Her Majesty Queen Mary Thursday 15 March Elly Summers, curator of the Royal Women exhibition on show at the Fashion Museum throughout 2018, will shine the spotlight on Queen Mary (1867 1953), a figure at the centre of the British monarchy for over half a century. Royal Men Thursday 29 March Deirdre Murphy, curator at Historic Royal Palaces, will discuss fashions and dress worn by Royal men, from King Edward VII onwards.
Winter Spring 2018 Continuing throughout 2018 11 Creative Activities Saturday Sketching First Saturday of every month, 10.30 12.30 Sketch the beautiful objects on displayin our A History of Fashion in 100 Objects exhibition, with suggestions of key spots of interest from the curators. Self-led sketching sessions in the Museum, materials provided. Free to attend with Museum entry. Bath Knitting & Crochet Guild Second Saturday of every month, 10.00 12.00 Monthly knitting and crocheting session at the Museum. Attendees must be comfortable climbing stairs. Free to attend, all skill levels welcome. Learning at the Fashion Museum There are many ways to learn at the Fashion Museum, from a teaching session to a self-guided visit. Our sessions are closely linked to the curriculum and also cater for young people who are developing an interest in fashion and textiles. Bespoke Embroidery: Inspired by 1902 Coronation Glove Saturday 16 June Create a version of the gold embroidery used on these gloves with Deborah Wilding. Please see our website for details. 13 Below: Royal Women Exhibition Guidebook Assembly Rooms The Ball Room The Bath Assembly Rooms were designed to be a place for dancing and music. When they were completed in 1771 they were described as the most noble and elegant of any in the kingdom, with the Ball Room accommodating as many as 800 people. Today, the building contains the finest set of 18th-century chandeliers in the world. Private Hire The Ball Room, Tea Room, Card Room and Great Octagon are all available for private hire for weddings, conferences, dinners, parties and other functions. Museum Shop The shop sells a carefully chosen selection of gifts, fashion accessories, jewellery and stationery. It specialises in 18th-century Georgian-inspired products, echoing the popular styles of the Jane Austen era. There are also product ranges to accompany the Fashion Museum s special exhibitions programme and this, together with an ever changing seasonal selection, makes for a must-visit destination.
