A Nutritionist's Guide to Prepared for you by Toni Fairman, NTP Essential Oils For Your Health

Essential oils are one of nature s finest gifts for supporting wellness. It is believed that the use of aromatic properties of plants dates back to 2500 B.C. Derived from bark, flowers, fruit seeds, leaves, stems, and roots, essential oils are volatile liquids distilled from plants that are used therapeutically, as well as in culinary applications. Purity and potency are of utmost importance in order to safely and effectively benefit from these regenerating and protective tools of nature. I ve put together this guide to help you get started using them to support your health.

How to Use Essential Oils The first step in using essential oils, besides sourcing, is understanding dosing. Essential oils are very strong so a little goes a long way. Several hundred to several thousand pounds of plant material are used to make one pound of essential oil. These oils embody the regenerating, protective and immunestrengthening properties of the plants from which they are made. Essential oil constituents can affect every cell of your body within 20 minutes. Hot or spicy oils should always be diluted with a carrier oil prior to applying. The most common carrier oils are fractionated coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and almond oil. These oils are healthy in their own right and combine well with essential oils in roller balls when creating your own blends or just to dilute a drop or two of any oil for sensitive skin. Be aware that certain essential oils are not to be ingested. If there is a supplement label on the bottle, that oil can be taken orally or used in food.

Here are some general guidelines for direct application of essential oils. Direct Application for Adults drops on the sole of each foot. Dilute oils when massaging into large areas of the body, 310 drops per 1 Tablespoon of carrier oil. Use caution when mixing oils in a container as their chemical properties can be altered when combined. Oils can be layered, applied individually one after another. Direct Applications for Babies & Children When using essential oils for children and infants, it is best to dilute using a carrier oil. For newborns to 2 years of age, dilute 12 drops of essential oils in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. For children over 2 years of age, dilute 12 drops of essential oil in ½ to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Oils that are generally considered safe for children include cypress, frankincense, geranium, ginger, lavender, lemon, marjoram, melaleuca, orange, rosemary, sandalwood, thyme, and ylang ylang. Rosemary should always be diluted when used on infants or children. Lemon and orange are photosensitive and should not be used when skin will be exposed to direct sunlight soon after applying. Keep oils out of reach of children. If ingested, give the child an oilsoluble liquid such as milk, cream, or half & half. Then, call your local poison control center or seek medical care. Aromatic applications are another way to benefit from the use of essential oils. You can simply sniff an open bottle or diffuse the oil into the air with a nebulizing diffuser.

Essential Oils to Support Your Health There are so many wonderful ways to use essential oils to support your health. The following is a list of conditions that may be supported by the use of essential oils. These oils may be used by applying drops to the soles of the feet and over specific areas of concern. Many oils may be taken orally in a small amount of water as well. Look for a supplement label on the bottle to determine if that oil can be taken internally. It s best to use blends alone but individual oils can be layered by rubbing one oil on your skin and then the next a few seconds later. This list is for information use only and not a substitute for the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner. Please consult your physician prior to using essential oils for conditions that require medication. If you are presently on a medication, always check for contraindications with essential oils. Acid reflux support: drops of DigestZen to the soles of feet. Or, apply drops of Lemon or Peppermint to the soles of feet individually or layer both by applying one then the other a few seconds later. Acne: drops of Clear Skin to each foot. Or apply drops of Cedarwood, Juniper Berry or Melaleuca to the soles of feet individually or layer them. These oils can also be applied directly to area of concern starting with just 1 drop diluted in a carrier oil.

Adrenal support: drops of Elevation to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Basil or Rosemary to soles of feet individually or layer both by applying one then the other a few seconds later. Allergy support: drops of Lavender, Lemon, Melaleuca or Peppermint to the soles of feet individually or layer them. Anxiety: drops of Balance, Elevation, Serenity or InTune to soles of feet. Arthritis support: drops of Lemon or Oregano individually to soles of feet or layer them. Athlete s foot support: drops of Melaleuca or Oregano individually to soles of feet or layer them or apply to affected areas as needed. Bacterial infection support: drops of Oregano to soles of feet. Bed wetting: Rub 12 drops of Cypress & Ylang Ylang on abdominal region at bedtime. Blood sugar balancing (low blood sugar): drops of OnGuard to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Eucalyptus oil to soles of feet. Blood sugar balancing (high blood sugar): drops of Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander or Rosemary to individually to soles of feet or layer them.

Bruises: drops of Lavender to soles of feet or directly over bruised area. Burns (such as from hot pan): drops of Lavender to affected area. Candida overgrowth support: apply drops of OnGuard to soles of feet. Or drops of Oregano, Melaleuca or Clove individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one then Cellular support: 20 30 Frankincense, Myrrh & Sandalwood ( drops each along with fractionated coconut oil in roller bottle) applied to soles of feet or along spine twice daily Cellulite: drops of Slim & Sassy to soles of feet. apply Or drops of Grapefruit or Rosemary individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Charley horse support: drops of Lemongrass to soles of feet or affected area.. Chronic fatigue support: 12 drops of OnGuard, Peppermint or Basil topically to muscles, joints and soles of feet or diffuse in room. Circulation support: drops of Peppermint to soles of feet or affected area.

Cold sores support: drops of OnGuard to soles of feet or affected area. Or apply drops of Melissa or Helichrysum individually to soles of feet or affected area or layer them by applying one, then Colds support: drops of Lavender, Lemon or Melaleuca to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Congestion support: Add 1 drop of Eucalyptus, Lavender or Melaleuca to a diffuser during the daytime. 1 drop of Breathe or Peppermint can be placed on chest and/or under the nose. Constipation: Combine 4 drops of Ginger oil, 4 drops of Orange oil and/or 4 drops of Rosemary with 23 ounces of carrier oil and rub on soles of feet and over abdomen. Cough support: drops of Lemon to soles of feet or throat area. Cradle cap support: Mix 1 drop of Lemon and 1 drop of Geranium with 2 Tbs. carrier oil or shea butter. a tiny amount to affected area. Croup support: Diffuse 2 drops of Marjoram oil & 2 drops of Thyme oil or mix both oils with carrier oil and apply topically over chest and neck. Dandruff: Mix 2 drops Lavender and 2 drops Wintergreen with 1 tablespoons carrier oil and apply topically to scalp.

Deodorant: drops of Purify, Elevation, Lavender, Geranium or Cypress to arm pits. Depression support: drops of Balance or Elevation to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Lemon, Frankincense or Bergamot to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Dermatitis support: drops of Clear Skin to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Helichrysum, Thyme or Geranium soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Detoxification support: drops of Purification to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Lemon or Lemongrass to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one then Diarrhea support: drops of DigestZen to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Ginger or Peppermint to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Lavender & Roman chamomile (add 1 drop each to baby s bathwater). Diaper rash: Dry skin: Combine 2 drops of Sandalwood oil in 1 tablespoons carrier oil or shea butter and apply to dry skin.

Earache support: Combine 1 drop of Lavender, 1 drop of Melaleuca l & 1 drop of Roman chamomile on a cotton ball and apply in and behind ear and on reflex points on soles of feet. Eczema support: drops of Lavender, Melaleuca, Helichrysum, Juniper Berry or Thyme oil to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then another a few seconds later. These oils may also be applied to affected area. Elevated cholesterol support: Geranium or Helichrysum to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Fatigue: drops of Serenity to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Thyme or Rosemary to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Fever support: Combine 12 drops of Lavender & 12 drops of Peppermint in 2 ounces of carrier oil and rub into neck, soles of feet, behind ears and on back. Fibroids support: drops of Balance to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Frankincense or Helichrysum to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one, then Flu support: Add 12 drops of Cypress or Lemon to a glass of water. Focus support: drops of InTune to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Lavender or Peppermint individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then

Fungus: drops of Melaleuca to soles of feet or on site. Gallbladder congestion: drops of Geranium or Rosemary to soles of feet individually or layer them by applying one then Gas: drops of Lavender, Ginger or Cardamom individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Gastritis support: drops of DigestZen to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Fennel or Peppermint individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Gum disease support: 12 drops of OnGuard, Melaleuca or Myrrh topically to gums. Dilute in fractionated coconut if gums are sensitive. Hair loss: Combine 2 drops each of Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender & Cedarwood in a 3ounce roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply to scalp. Headache support: drops of PastTense or Peppermint to soles of feet as well as directly over region of headache.

Heartburn disease: drops of DigestZen to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Lemon or Peppermint individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Hemorrhoid support: Combine 1 drop each of Cypress, Geranium & Helichrysum in a 3ounce roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply topically. High blood pressure support: drops of Lemon, Ylang Ylang or Marjoram to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then. Hives support: Combine 1 drop each of Melalueca, Peppermint & Lavender in a 3ounce roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply topically. Hot flashes (menopausal): drops of Balance, Clary Calm or Clary Sage to each foot. Choose only one. Hypothyroid support: drops of Clove, Frankincense, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Myrrh or Peppermint individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Hyperactivity support: drops of Balance or Frankincense to soles of feet. Choose only one. Immune support: drops of OnGuard to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Lemon or Frankincense individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then

Impetigo support: drops of Clear Skin, Geranium or Lavender topically to site. Reduce to 12 drops and combine with 1 tablespoon carrier oil for infants and in 1 teaspoon carrier oil for children. Infertility support: drops of Clary Sage, Geranium or Ylang Ylang oil to soles of feet or layer them by applying one then Inflammation support: drops of Eucalyptus or Frankincense individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Insect bites: Add 4 drops each of Lavender & Roman chamomile or Purify to a small bowl of cold water; soak cloth and place over bite for 60 seconds. Jet lag, morning: drops of Peppermint to soles of feet. Jet lag, evening: drops of Balance to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Lavender or Geranium individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Lactation support: drops of Clary Sage oil to soles of feet. Laryngitis support: drops of Bergamot oil topically to throat.

Libido support, female: drops of Elevation to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Ylang Ylang, Clary Sage or Geranium individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Libido support, male: drops of Elevation to each foot. Or apply drops of Ylang Ylang, Cinnamon, Ginger or Myrrh individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Liver support: drops of Coriander, Helichrysum, Juniper Berry, Rosemary, or Lemon individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then another a few seconds later. Lymphatic support: drops of Cypress or Sandalwood individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Male impotence: drops of Ylang Ylang or Clary Sage oil individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Mastitis support: drops of Citrus Blend or Lavender oil to soles of feet. Metabolism support: drops of Balance, Slim & Sassy or Clove oil to soles of feet. Moodiness (hormonal): drops of Balance, Serenity or Clary Sage oil to soles of feet. Mosquito repellent: Diffuse TerraShield on your patio or apply drops topically to exposed skin. May also add 1520 drops to 8 ounces of water in a spray glass bottle and spray exposed skin.

Morning sickness support: drops of Peppermint, Ginger or Lemon individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Motion sickness support: drops of Coriander, Helichrysum, Juniper Berry, Rosemary, or Lemon individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then another a few seconds later. Muscle cramps: drops of Cypress or Sandalwood individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Nausea: drops of Peppermint, Ginger or Cardamom oil individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Pain support: 12 drops of Clove oil to affected area. If muscular, apply 12 drops of Deep Blue to affected area or add to 1 tablespoon shea butter and massage into affected area. Pancreatitis support: 12 drops each of Cinnamon, Fennel & Geranium over pancreas region layering one, then Parasite support: drops of DigestZen to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Thyme, Fennel or Roman chamomile individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Phlebitis support: drops of Helichrysum, Lavender, Cypress or Geranium individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then

Premenstrual syndrome support: drops of Clary Calm to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Clary Sage or Geranium individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Prostatitis support: Combine 5 drops each of Thyme, Lavender & Cypress in a 3ounce roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply to prostate region, scrotum and soles of feet. Scarring: drops of Frankincense or Helichrysum individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Both or either can also be applied directly on scar. Sinus support: 1 drop of Breathe to skin under nose or on chest. Sleeplessness: drops of Serenity to soles. Or apply drops of Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Cedarwood oil to individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Sleeplessness for Children: 12 drops of Lavender to soles of feet. Snoring: 12 drops of Thyme oil on both big toes prior to sleep. Sore Throat support: drops of OnGuard or Oregano oil to soles of feet. Staph infection support: drops of OnGuard to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Oregano or Helichrysum individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then

Stomach Ache support: apply drops of DigestZen to soles of feet. Or drops of Basil or Ginger individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then another a few seconds later. Stress (emotional): 4 drops of Serenity to each foot. Or apply 1 drops of Bergamot, Lavender, Roman chamomile or Ylang Ylang individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Stretch mark support: Combine 5 drops each of Lavender & Myrrh in a 3 ounce roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply topically. Combine 5 Sun protection: drops each of Arborvitae & Helichrysum 4 with Combine 5 ounces of shea butter. Sunburn: drops of Lavender oil with 2 ounces of aloe vera gel and apply to burn. Teething: Combine 1 drop each of Lavender & Roman chamomile with 2 ounces shea butter, almond oil or fractionated coconut oil and rub along outside of face along jaw line. Varicose veins support: Combine 35 drops each of Cypress, Lemon, Lemongrass & Peppermint in a 3 ounce roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply to legs from ankles upward. Vertigo support: 12 drops each of Ginger, Helichrysum, Geranium or Basil to the tops of each ear and behind the ears.

Vitiligo support: drops of Sandalwood, Vetiver or Myrrh individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Or, apply topically to affected area. Warts: 12 drops of Oregano, Frankincense, OnGuard or Melaleuca directly to affected area once daily. Water Retention support: drops of Grapefruit, Lemongrass or Cypress oil to each foot individually or layer them by applying one, then Whooping Cough support: 12 drops of Oregano, Basil & Thyme topically to chest, neck and soles of feet or diffuse in room.. Wounds (minor): 12 drops of Clove, Melaleuca, Helichrysum, Lavender, Lemongrass, Basil or Purify directly to affected area. Do not apply to open wound. Wrinkles: drops of Immortelle to soles of feet. Or apply drops of Helichrysum, Myrrh or Geranium individually to soles of feet or layer them by applying one, then Or, apply topically to affected area.
