I know I have. Our studios have been in solid demand, thanks to the many diverse opportunities for learning and self-expression we offer through our many exciting programs, as well as our studio rental for few hours a week during the winter months to The Center for Lifelong Learning. Looking at our February calendar, as of today, there is only one day where there is nothing on schedule in our studios!!! February 2014 SMILE You Have Every Reason To! If you visited the Members Show and Open House Event in January, you witnessed firsthand the talents of our members. Open House visitors enjoyed demos in Photography, Watercolor Batik, Fused Glass, Watercolor Painting, Papermaking, Acrylic Painting, Pottery, Mosaic, Encaustics, and Colored Pencil, as well as a fabulous display of member art in various media. Entrancing! And a true pleasure! A big thanks to the Open House Chair Carolyn Williams, and the crew: Helen Harris, Tuny Jennings, Marcy Eady, Sandra Harrison, Pam Folse, Julia Allen, and Pat Roberts! Applause! Applause! Just last week, we managed to squeeze in the 22nd Southeast Regional Juried Fine Arts Exhibition Reception and the three-day 55th Annual Beaux Arts Exhibition, in just four days! Thanks to our host at the former, Mattie Kelly Arts Center Galleries, Northwest Florida State College, and K.C. Williams, Gallery Director; the Juror, Don Andrews; and Exhibit Chairman Marcy Eady and her crew. Also a big thank you to our Beaux Arts Exhibition host, Westwood Retirement Resort, and Michelle Sears, Director of Resident Programs, the Judge, Deborah Orr, and all the ADSO crew who helped me, as Chairman of the event. Last but not least, thank you to all participating artists and congratulations to all for two outstanding exhibits. I think you know by now why I think we should all be smiling; you may call it lucky and we just might be that. Window Gallery Art Display Please contact Helen Harris if you wish to display your works in our picture windows in 2014. Many of our members have displayed their work in the last two years, and there are many more of you who might like to showcase your work. If you have already done so, you are welcome to do so again. Volunteers Needed! Volunteering in any group, ADSO included, has benefits both for YOU as well as for the group. In our case, volunteers can log up hours (40, total) which count toward free membership...and also get to know other members, not to mention, have fun. Please consider working a few hours each month or on individual projects. It will benefit ADSO--and you! Here are some of our current needs: We need volunteers for special events, such as Art Week. We need volunteers for Gallery sitting on Saturdays 1-4 pm. We need volunteers to help with Hurricane Preparedness. Volunteer Hours If you have not turned in your volunteer hours accrued during 2013, totaling 40 or more, please do so as soon as possible for your free membership cer=ficate. These hours include work as a chairman, Saturday or possibly other days siing in the gallery, helping with Kids' Art Weeks (not teaching), helping take in art work for shows, helping with recep=ons, seing up luncheons, all totaling 40+ hours. Thanks to all of you who have volunteered throughout the year. New Policy Regarding Retrieval of Work After Shows We have encountered a series of problems with unclaimed art work being lep at ADSO. Because of the limited space for storage, as of January 2014, any works not collected from the special shows (Beaux Arts, Fair Show, SE Regional) and all ADSO shows, on the designated dates, will incur a storage fee of $10. This fee will be collected for works held one day to two weeks aper the show closing. ADSO will not be responsible or liable for any damage to those works during that =me. APer two weeks, unclaimed works will become the property of ADSO. Excep=ons can be made for special requests made in advance. The Photography Club The Photography Club will meet on Wednesday, February 19, at 7:00 p.m.

Special Classes Simple Wire Wrapping, February 21, Friday, 9:30 am 3 pm, one hour lunch break Cost: $55 member / $65 non-member Materials fee: $20 Instructor: Teddie Ciudad-Real Minimum students, 4; maximum students, 6 Teddie Ciudad-Real will teach two basic skeleton wire wrap styles and one free form doughnut style. She will discuss and demonstrate the different tools used in the process and discuss some of the properties of wire and the proper ways to handle it. The students will have a choice of wire, bronze or copper, as well as a variety of stones to choose from. Smooth flat nose pliers will be used in most of the process and students should bring a pair if they have one. Kumihimo - Japanese form of Artistic Braiding, February 27, Thursday, 12 pm - 3 pm Cost: $30 member / $35 non-member Materials fee: $15 Instructor: Teddie Ciudad-Real Minimum students, 4; maximum students, 8 Students will learn the basic elements of Kumihimo Japanese Braiding, with and without beads. A kit will be provided for each student which will include the material needed for one project. Life Sculpture Saturday, March 8, 9:30 am-2:30 pm No instructor. Participants will create maquette-size clay sculptures of a live model. Cost: $25/Members; $30/Non-members, plus a tip for the model. Cost may change, depending on number of artists. Clay, firing, and model fee are included in cost. Advance registration and payment is required, by calling 244-1271 or going by the ADSO office, Tuesday-Friday, noon- 4 pm. Realism to Abstraction Workshop Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7 Farideh Peacock will offer a two-day acrylics workshop, Realism to Abstraction, studying complementary colors, contrast, balance and the creativity of a piece. She will provide guidance and technical support along with in-depth critiques. on March 6 and 7, from 9 am-1 pm each day. Cost of the two-day class is Members/$110; Non-Members/$130. Peacock's art education began in England and continued in the United States, where she obtained a BFA from the Herron School of Art, Indiana University, and then became a faculty member of the Indianapolis Art Center. Besides earning awards recognizing her work, she has paintings in private collections in both Britain and the United States, and has been featured in numerous exhibitions. Call to Photographers: Mattie M. Kelly 2014 Amateur Photo Contest The Mattie M. Kelly Cultural & Environmental Institute announces the 2014 Amateur Photo Contest! First, second, and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes. Winning photos plus nine honorable mention photos will be selected for inclusion in a 2015 photo calendar.
