Manifesta 12 Palermo reveals 5x5x5 programme projects list Palermo, 4 April 2018 Manifesta 12 Palermo reveals the list of projects in the 5x5x5 programme: 15 projects were selected among the 188 projects received. 5x5x5 is a part of the Manifesta 12 programme of parallel events conducted in close collaboration with local artists, museums, institutions, and professionals in the cultural sector. It is produced next to the main programme, which will involve the exhibitions and projections of national and international artists in venues throughout Palermo. 5x5x5, named after its structure featuring: 5 artists-in-residence, 5 gallery pop-up shows, and 5 masterclasses by international/national institutions, is a new model of Manifesta parallel events. It has been designed to foster a more inclusive exchange and networking between Palermo s cultural communities and Manifesta s diverse international network of artists, creative producers, academic and educational institutions, thinkers, and influential stakeholders. The selected projects listed below are geographically distributed in this way: 13% from Sicily, 27% from Italy, 40% from Europe, and 20% from other countries. The Manifesta 12 announcement for the 5x5x5 programme active from November 2017 to January 2018 consisted of an invitation for national and international individual artists, international and national galleries, and educational institutions to propose a project for the

biennial s parallel programme. The 5x5x5 programme is to be carried out during the same period as the biennial and will benefit from Manifesta's international reach. The 5x5x5 programme is not part of the main biennial programme, but is related to it and is promoted through the official digital and analogue channels of the biennial: website, guidebook, social networks, and official app of Manifesta 12. Project selection criteria: - Creating a long term collaboration with local partners - Taking place in Palermo and/ or Sicily - Taking place in the same period as the Manifesta 12 biennial (16 June 2018 04 November 2018) - In line with the quality standards of Manifesta - Fitting into one of the categories: 5x artists-in-residence in Palermo in public and private spaces in the city 5x pop-up shows by international/national galleries 5x summerschools/masterclasses by international/national educational institutions - Realized in collaboration with the local art scene and/or local professionals, organizations and students - Has a sound financing plan and in realization - It is not required that the proposed project be thematically connected with the biennial s overall concept For further information please send an email to: 555@manifesta.org

Since it started, Manifesta has developed into a platform for dialogue between art and society in Europe, by inviting the cultural and artistic community to produce new creative experiences with, and not for, the context in which it takes place. Manifesta is a site-specific cultural project that rethinks the relations between culture and society through a continuous dialogue with the social sphere. Manifesta was founded and is still run by Dutch art historian, Hedwig Fijen, in Amsterdam. Each new edition is started up and fundraised individually, and managed by a permanent team of international specialists. Manifesta is working from its offices in Amsterdam and Palermo, with an upcoming office in Marseille. Led by Hedwig Fijen and Peter Paul Kainrath, the permanent

team consists of Tatiana Tarragó, Paul Domela, Esther Regueira, Yana Klichuk, Marieke van Hal, and Mikaela Poltz, as well as Manifesta 12 general manager Roberto Albergoni and coordinator Francesca Verga. In its next decade, Manifesta will focus on evolving from an influential contemporary art biennial into an interdisciplinary European platform that investigates and catalyzes positive social change in Europe through contemporary culture.
