N., Waterloo; 519-883-8563 124 GRAND JANUARY I FEBRUARY 2018 Keep your eyes open for blue scarves I f you re into knitting, there s a good chance you ll be inspired to hunt down the same colour of blue used to make the scarf that appears on our Fashion pages. Karen Crouch, owner of Shall We Knit? in Waterloo, says knitters are driven to recreate finished products that catch their eye so she ll be ordering extra bundles skeins of this blue. Samples are what sell the yarn, she says. Ask for Cascade Magnum 9550, Mediterranean H. It is 100 per cent Peruvian Highland wool and costs $27.95 per skein. Crouch says other options and price points are available. Grand s scarf was crafted by Erin Anton, a Shall We Knit? staff member who also teaches classes at the store. Anton used 19-millimetre needles and three skeins of wool, using a garter stitch that Crouch says is perfect for beginners looking to give knitting a try. The blue scarf is done in a style that matches the current trend. The super-bulkies are huge right now, Crouch says. When Grand approached on the hunt for one 15 feet long, hand-knit by a local artisan, Crouch didn t bat an eye. She says she has fielded queries from people seeking supplies for all kinds of crafts and activities, including fly fishing. Above, guard dog Teddy was on duty as Erin Anton put the finishing touches on the extra-long blue scarf featured on our Style pages. Karen Crouch, owner of Shall We Knit? in Waterloo, then joined Anton in trying the scarf on for size. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRESTINA MARTINS Apparently, some fish are attracted to yarn. Shall We Knit? is celebrating its 10th anniversary year. Its first four years were in New Hamburg before moving to the current location on Willow Street in Waterloo. It s a destination shop for specialty yarns, Crouch says. She carries lots of natural wool and plant fibres, such as cotton, silks and alpaca. We really do a lot of hand-dyed yarns, she says, which people use to make socks and lightweight garments. But Anton s creation for Grand is built for winter. Now, it s just a matter of seeing how popular this blue becomes. If you start seeing that colour on scarves around town you ll know you ve had an influence, Crouch says.
