Problem skin Propionibacterium acnes is the bacteria responsible for inflamed acne breakouts. It is generally harmless but when pores become engorged with excess oil and dead skin cells, it creates an environment where P. acnes can excessively grow. This then triggers inflammation within the pore, creating a papule, pimple, or cyst. Reducing the P. acnes population is therefore an important step in controlling acne. Teenagers and adults are often very selfconscious when skin breaks out, either as a result of acne and skin inflammation. Fortunately the cosmetics industry offers a number of ingredients to prevent, treat and target problematic skin. Anti-bacterial For a comprehensive list please refer to our Preservative and Anti-bacterial range leaflet. Canadian Willowherb (INCI: Water (and) Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/ Stem Extract) is an edible (used in tea bags) multifunctional active ingredient that contains bioactive molecules such as Oenothein B which has 5-α-reductase inhibitory activity, anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties. Its primary function is as a non-steroidal anti-irritant ingredient. In vitro experiments have demonstrated free radical scavenging ability. In addition, Canadian Willowherb shows strong anti-bacterial activity on P. acnes. Its anti-irritant and redness reduction properties have been clinically demonstrated, showing a strong reduction of skin redness induced by chemicals or UV exposure within 30 minutes of use. Ideal for anti-acne, redness, anti-ageing, intimate care, oral care (anti-irritant/ bleeding gums), sun care (reduces UV-induced erythema) and baby care (nappy rash). Recommended use level: 1-3% CYTOFRUIT WATERS Lemon (INCI: Citrus Limon Fruit Extract) is an organic certified water from Lemon fruits harvested in Mediterranean organic fields. Rich in Vitamin C, Potassium and Citric Acid, Lemon fruits cleanse and exfoliate dull and oily skins, whilst refreshing and quenching the skin s thirst to provide a radiant glow. In addition, Lemon fruit also offers natural anti-bacterial and astringent properties. Thanks to the presence of oligo-elements, this CYTOFRUIT Water could sustain skin biological benefits through an improvement of cell vitality, a protection against external agents or a physiological improvement. Standard grade (Bio 99) is preserved with Potassium Sorbate. Bio grade is available and is preservative-free. Recommended usage level: 1 100% Dermosoft Decalact (INCI: Sodium Caproyl/Lauroyl Lactyl Lactate) is a natural and effective active (from sugar beet) against gram positive bacteria and yeasts with efficacy against Melassezia Furfur (dandruff), Trichophyton (athletes foot), Candida Albicans (thrush) and P.acnes (acne). For dandruff applications the optimum ph is 5.5, which is lower than the more traditionally used Octypirox (ph 7). The optimum ph for a healthy scalp is 5.5. Upon testing, Decalact was found to outperform Climbazole and Triclosan in treatments for Athletes Foot. Decalact is also effective in nail care. In thrush treatments, Decalact was found to immediately reduce Candida Albicans. For acne, Decalact was found to perform comparably to 0.5% Salicylic Acid. There are no usage restrictions for Decalact. Easy to handle version is Dermosoft Decalact Liquid. Recommended use level: 0.5 1% (leave-on) and 1 2% (rinse-off). Drieline (INCI: Sorbitol (and) Yeast Extract) is a highly purified Yeast Polysaccharide extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This Yeast, used in a multitude of common fermentation processes (beer, alcohol, bread) reinforces the natural skin defence system as well as cell renewal. The Polysaccharide is obtained by an eco-friendly manufacturing process. Ideal for anti-aging and antimicrobial applications as well as the protection of Langerhan cells which are not protected by Melanin. Recommended use level: 0.5-2% HydroSal BKC (INCI: Water, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Benzalkonium Chloride, Ethyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Acrylates Copolymer). BKC (Benzalkonium Chloride) extends protection from microbes, pathogens, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. It has consistently been the disinfectant of choice for hospitals. HydroSal BKC was designed to achieve a better utilisation of BKC, while replacing alcohol-based antiseptics, at low concentration. HydroSal BKC is an encapsulation technology comprised of sub-micron spheres approximately 0.1 to 0.3 microns in diameter. These spheres are infused with BKC and form a clear product. The HydroSal technology allows for time release and longerlasting effects, extending the time of protection from microbes. The product is effective upon application. In addition, it can be re-activated long after initial application, when exposed to water or perspiration. The shell is able to assemble and lock in the BKC while drying. Once in contact with water after drying out, the shell dissolves and exposes the BKC again. This feature allows the system to provide maximum protection in areas that are exposed to cycles of dampness and dryness. The protection is needed most in damp/wet conditions because these conditions are favourable for bacteria growth, such as the under arm and foot. Keratolytic Agents A.H.A.
