BURNABY, BC The Burnaby Art Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition featuring the works by renowned Canadian artist, Gathie Falk. Please join us on Thursday, July 3 from 7-9pm for the opening reception of Gathie Falk: paperworks. The gallery is also hosting an Afternoon Tea with the Artist on Saturday, July 5, from 2-4pm. Gathie Falk will be in attendance and will be signing copies of her catalogue: Gathie Falk: paperworks (available for purchase). The exhibit opens to the public on Friday, July 4 and runs until August 24. This survey of Falk s works on paper includes new papier maché sculptural pieces and shirting created for the exhibition. A diverse selection of Falk s work, including acrylic, watercolours, and screenprints will be shown in the lower gallery, along with her large-scale Shirting series, as well as other works focusing on garments and textiles. In the turret room visitors will have an opportunity to view four of Falk s performance art works that were recorded in 1969 and 1972. The upper gallery takes on a theme of nature and features two large-scale installation pieces. The second floor landing exhibition wall will feature The Mysterious Chronicles of a Broken Arm, an autobiographical series of surreal gouache paintings Falk painted with her left hand after breaking her right arm.
GATHIE FALK (1928) is one of British Columbia s leading senior artists. She is an internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor who is best known for the imaginative and conceptual treatment she gives to everyday objects. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Canada, the United States, France and Japan including a solo show at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2000. Her art can be found in more than 35 private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection which is managed by the Burnaby Art Gallery. Gathie Falk has received numerous awards including the Gershon Iskowitz Prize (1990) Order of Canada (1997), the Governor General s Award in Visual Art (2003) and the Viva Award for Lifetime Achievement (2012).
