Mannan stains, also known as gum stains, are hard to wash off and act like dirt attractors. It is difficult to avoid mannan stains as mannan is widely used as a thickener and stabilizer in sauces, salad dressings, ice creams, desserts, and beverages, as well as in various personal care products, including toothpastes, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions. After a wash, even if mannan-based stains might appear to have been washed out, the mannan is not and may even be distributed to otherwise clean clothes via the wash water. These invisible mannan residues on the clothes act as a kind of glue and attract soil particles, resulting in fabric graying and dirty clothes. What can Mannaway do for your brand? Mannans constitute an increasing problem Mannan, also known as gum, is a carbohydrate found extensively in food products, household agents, and personal care products. Since more and more of these products around the world contain guar gum or locust bean gum, a trend that is on the rise, it is nearly impossible to keep clothing free from occasional mannan stains (Figure 1). What is mannan? Mannans are polysaccharides consisting of a mannose backbone linked together by b-1,4-linkages with side-chains of galactose, attached to the backbone by a-1,6-linkages (Figure 2). Two of the most commonly used mannans in food and personal care products are guar gum (E412) and locust bean gum (E410). The magic of Mannaway Enzymes are very specific, and carbohydrases like amylases and cellulases do not recognize the structure of mannan and can therefore not remove it from fabric. However, since mannanases, like Novozymes Mannaway, are galactomannan-specific carbohydrases, they are able to degrade the b-1,4-linkages in mannan and remove mannan stains from clothes. Mannaway breaks down mannans and effectively removes stains containing guar gum or locust bean gum, thereby increasing in-depth cleaning by removing the adhesive mannan. Improve stain removal with Mannaway Mannaway efficiently removes mannan-containing stains from a variety of food products, including chocolate ice cream, pudding, fruit sorbet, milkshake, sauces, and salad dressing. You can be confident that consumers will easily recognize the stain removal benefits when you add Mannaway to your detergent (stain pictures in Figure 3). The stain removal performance of Mannaway is documented in both powder and liquid detergents using commercially available EU powder detergents and US liquid detergents with and without Mannaway. When the detergent is dosed with just 0.4% Mannaway 4.0 T or Mannaway 4.0 L, the excellent stain removal effect is clearly visible (Figures 4 and 5). Two enzymes are better than one Add Mannaway to your detergent that contains Stainzyme, the high-performance amylase from Novozymes, and boost the stain removal power of your detergent. No matter if the stains are troublesome food stains containing starch or mannan you can exploit the synergy between these two enzyme solutions, leading to an elevated performance plateau (Figure 6). However, when combining the two enzymes, Mannaway degrades the mannan, giving Stainzyme access to the starch, thereby providing superior synergistic stain removal. Better and deeper cleanness Mannan binds strongly to cellulose fibers in cotton fabrics due to the high affinity between mannan and cellulose polymers. In addition, mannans have a glue effect on particulate soils released during a wash cycle or subsequent wear, resulting in dirty and gray clothes. Mannaway removes mannan stains and prevents soil deposition on mannan-stained clothes, thus preventing fabric graying. Regardless of whether it is a liquid or powder, a color or bleach-containing detergent, Mannaway adds its stain removal power to the detergent ensuring clean clothes. Fights aggressive dirt The cleaning effect of Mannaway can be demonstrated in the presence of a number of common outdoor soils that are likely to be present in everyday laundry such as traffic dirt, illustrated by the use of particulate soil such as carpet soil, and clay. To demonstrate how well Mannaway prevents soil deposition on mannan-stained fabrics, cotton T-shirts stained with guar gum and locust bean gum were washed in a commercial EU powder detergent and a US liquid detergent in the presence of carpet soil or clay. It is clear that cotton T-shirts washed with detergent containing no Mannaway are heavily soiled. This happens because clay or carpet soil particles glue onto the stains (on-spot measurement) as well as onto previously clean parts of the T-shirt (off-spot measurement). When Mannaway is present, the guar gum and locust bean gum stains are degraded, preventing clay and carpet soil particles from gluing to the fabric and ensuring that the fabric remains bright and clean (Figures 7 and 8).

If mannan stains (guar gum and locust bean gum) are not degraded by a mannanase and removed from the T-shirts, mannan soilings will smear and redeposit during the wash onto otherwise clean fabric surfaces. Here where they act as glue for soil particles, making the clothes dirty and gray. Mannans are everywhere In addition to the challenge of mannan in food products, more and more personal care products worldwide contain mannans in the form of guar gum or locust bean gum. According to an analysis from Mintel, 25% of all mannan-containing products launched between 2001 and 2007 were within the hair care and bath categories, making it hard to avoid mannan stains from lotions, toothpastes and shampoos (Figure 9). DETERgent Independent test institute results Stain removal power of Mannaway proven by the internationally recognized textile research and service center Hohenstein Independent test institutes in Europe have developed many relevant stains that prove the benefits of Mannaway. The performance of Mannaway is therefore well recognized by both retailers and detergent producers. The detergents were tested at the well-known European Hohenstein test institute using its standard range of mannan-based stains. On a majority of Hohenstein stains it is clear that even in detergents already containing a number of enzymes, Mannaway still has a significant effect on stain removal (EU washing machine, 5 g/l, 40 C).
