Preface important notes and regulations

Important Notes on the Product Data Sheets In case of pigment preparations the Colour Index data relate to the base pigments. If the chemical structure of the colorant was not published, no Colour Index number will appear. The dyes are illustrated by photographs of two aqueous dye solutions with commonly used concentrations for liquid detergents and personal care products ( 0.001 0.01 %). For the illustration of the pigment preparations emulsion paints colored with the pigment preparations were used (light shade: 1 % reduction in a white emulsion paint; dark shade: 3 % in a full shade emulsion paint). Regulation in general Due to several local regulations we can give a guideline on technical suitability of the product only. We recommend to observe local legislation before finally using the colorants. 3. Viscosity The viscosity of pigment preparation pastes was determined at 23 C with a rotation viscometer read off the flow curve at a shear rate of D = 60 s-1 (+/- 10 %). 4. Density Purity All products meet specific strict purity requirements regarding heavy metal content, primary aromatic amines etc. The maximum content differs per product group depending on the intended field of application. Some products are additionally microbiologically specified. The purity criteria per product can be given on request. The density of the pigment preparations was determined on a DMA 38 (densitometer). 5. Dust test For Cosmenyl gran. the dust test is performed on each batch, which is an indicator for the quality of the granulation process. ph stability of water soluble dyes Pigments are illustrated also by matching the mass tone and the reduction shade, the pigment being dispersed in linseed oil. Illustrations of the colorants were accomplished by four-color printing and therefore do not contain the pigments or dyes concerned. Thus, shade deviations are possible. Additionally, the final formulation has an impact on the color appearance. Please conduct preliminary tests to match the shade to your requirements. Test conditions Physical data Parameters mentioned under»physical data«contain basic product characteristics. Not all parameters are tested on each batch. The behavior of water soluble dyes at different ph values was tested in 0.001 % aqueous dye solutions buffered at the respective ph value 1 13. The respective samples are shown in photographs. (Please note that the shades of the illustrations can differ as mentioned above.) 1. ph value For water soluble dyes in powder or granular form, the ph value was determined on a 1 % aqueous dye solution at 20 C with a ph meter. The ph values of pigment preparations and liquid dyes were determined on the undiluted product. Regulation for the coloration of cosmetics 2. Solubility The information refers to colorants only. For pigment preparations the information is valid for the base pigments. For detailed information, please see the paragraph»regulations governing cosmetics«. The solubility figures represent the maximum amount of dry powder or granular dye in the respective solvent at 20 C. Fastness data of water soluble dyes 1. Fastness of water soluble dyes to acids, alkalis, and bleaching agents Fastness properties were tested on a 0.005 % dye solution. An aqueous dilution of the respective acid, alkali or bleaching agent was used at the concentration mentioned on the spreadsheets. The samples were stored at 50 C for 3 months. The assessment was carried out visually compared with a reference sample stored in the dark at room temperature.

Explanation of the visual assesment: = Stable Data explanation: No change in shade and no flocculation of the colorant occurred within the storage time = Medium stability Shift of shade or little loss on tinting strength, but no flocculation occurred within the storage time = Not stable Shift of shade, flocculation and/or discoloration occurred within the storage time = Recommended = Suitable = Not recommended Technically recommended for the application according to internal test methods and market information Technically suitable for the application according to internal test methods and market information, but some restrictions may apply Technically not suitable according to internal test methods and market information Trademark of Clariant registered in many countries. The light fastness of water soluble dyes was determined using two lamps à 300 W. Test tubes containing 0.001 % dye solution were exposed to the UV-light source. The relative tinting strength was measured compared to a dark stored sample after 72 h light exposure. Explanation of the light fastness assessment of water soluble dyes: Very good = 80-100 % rel. tinting strength Good = 60-80 % rel. tinting strength Moderate = 50-60 % rel. tinting strength Poor = < 50 % rel. tinting strength Fastness data of pigment preparations and solvent soluble dyes 1. Acid and alkali fastness of pigment preparations The fastness against acids and alkalis was tested on synthetic resin emulsion paint by a method resembling the standardized test procedure for the printing industry, as described in DIN 16524. The data were assessed against a 5-step gray scale»change in shade according to DIN EN 20105-A02/ ISO 105-A02,«with fastness ratings ranging from 5 (excellent) to 1 (poor). 2. Acid and alkali fastness of Solvaperm dyes Strips of rigid PVC colored with 0.1 % dye and 0.5 % TiO2 were placed in 5 % hydrochloric acid and 5 % caustic soda solution respectively for 3 days. Assessment was carried out compared with untreated films with reference to the 5-step gray scale in accordance with DIN 54001, fastness ratings ranging from 5 (unchanged) to 1 (severely changed). Used test media > Soap Pigment preparations were tested with 0.02 % concentration in soap. > Emulsion paint Cosmenyl pastes were tested with 3 % concentration in emulsion paint. Flexonyl grades were tested with 1 % concentration in emulsion paint. > Polystyrol 3. Light fastness of pigment preparations and solvent soluble dyes The light fastness data of pigment preparations and solvent soluble dyes were determined in an artificial light exposure. The assessment was carried out with reference to the 8-step blue wool scale, in accordance with DIN EN ISO 105-B01, the light fastness ratings ranging from 8 (excellent) to 1 (poor). The letter»d«was used for the reporting of a darkening effect after light exposure. Solvent soluble dyes were tested in polystyrol with a SD 1 3 respectively SD 1 25 standard depth of shade in accordance with DIN 53235. The required dye concentration for reaching SD 1 3 is given in grams per kilogram polystyrol.»opaque«light fastness was determined at SD 1 3 with 1.0 % TiO2 on injection molded color plaques. The concentration SD 1 25 without TiO2 was used to determine the»transparent«light fastness. Application profiles The application profiles shall be a guideline for the selection of a suitable colorant. From the broad field of home & fabric care, industrial & institutional cleaning, personal care & cosmetics only the main fields of application were taken into account. In any case we recommend to carry out trials in the final formulation. DP 5024 E 12.2012 2. Light fastness of water soluble dyes

Regulations Governing Cosmetics In legislative terms a cosmetic product includes»any substance or preparation intended to be placed in contact with the various external parts of the human body (epidermis, hair system, nails, lips, and external genital organs), or with the teeth and the mucous membranes of the oral cavity with a view exclusively or mainly to cleaning them, perfuming them, changing their appearance and/or correcting body odors and/or protecting them or keeping them in good condition«(european Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC). The regulations for cosmetic colorants for the USA, Japan, and the EU are used as guidelines by most countries in the respective regions. The different cosmetic regulations define several permitted use categories for colorants. Comparability can be assured by using the following categories. Those categories are used within this folder. Lip/Oral products subject to incidential ingestion (e.g. lip decoration or oral hygiene products) Eye area products to be applied in the orbit of the eyes (e.g. eye make-up or eye creams) External products applied to the external part of the body (not to the lips or any mucous membrane) e.g. creams or fragrances Rinse-off products intended to come into contact only briefly with the skin (e.g. shampoo, soap or conditioners) Japan In Japan, colorants for cosmetics and drugs are regulated by the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law. Purity requirements and label names are defined for»officially designated coal-tar colors«. Permitted use categories are deter- In most countries labeling is mandatory. All ingredients of the cosmetic product must be listed on the package with their official name defined by the local legislation. This name is mostly designated according the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) system based on the American CTFA (Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association) nomenclature. USA In the US, colorants for food, drugs and cosmetics are regarded as»color additives«. They are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Synthetic organic colorants for food, drugs and cosmetics intended for sale in the United States must have prior certification of the FDA. To avoid confusing color additives used in food with those manufactured for other uses, three categories of certifiable color additives were created: FD&C (color additives with application in foods, drugs or cosmetics); D&C (color additives with applications in drugs or cosmetics); External D&C (color additives with applications in externally applied drugs and in externally applied cosmetics). Purity requirements and permitted use categories are defined specifically for each color additive. mined by classification into three groups: List 1 for application in all drugs and cosmetics (including Lip/Oral, Eye Area, External, and Rinse-off ) List 2 for application in cosmetics (including Eye Area, External, and Rinseoff ) List 3 for application in cosmetics intended not to come into contact with the mucous membranes (including Eye Area but not eyeliners, External, and Rinse-off ) European Union The European Union issued the Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC in 1976. Amendments are generated regularly to keep the regulation up to date. Permitted use categories for cosmetic colorants are defined by the Cosmetic Application Fields: 1 allowed in all cosmetic products 2 allowed in all cosmetic products except those intended to be applied in the vicinity of the eyes, in particular eye make-up and eye make-up remover 3 allowed exclusively in cosmetic products intended not to come into contact with the mucous membranes 4 allowed exclusively in cosmetic products intended to come into contact only briefly with the skin DP 5024 E 12.2012 In general, the manufacturer of the formulation is responsible for using ingredients that meet the local legislative requirements. We at Clariant provide our customers with comprehensive technical support and maintain up-to-date information about the legal requirements applying to our products.
