Hairdressing Exam The Cosmetology Provincial Exam consists of Practical phase on a live model Written phase 2 papers: 1)Theory & 2)Infection Control/Bacteriology Students will be evaluated on professional image, posture and ethics in addition to their written and practical phases Equipment and Supplies All equipment and supplies required to demonstrate the various applications set out in the exam are the responsibility of the exam participant to provide (unless otherwise stated in this document) * the exam facility may not provide roller trollies Practical Approximately 4-5 Hours Set Station One model only Model will be required to participate in all practical phases Models cannot be Hairdressers or students in Hairdressing Model s hair must be no longer than 8 Model s must be 16yrs or older Time Limit for each phase 20 mins color application 8 mins shampoo 45 mins permanent wave 45 mins hairsetting pattern 45 mins haircut 20 mins blowdry & thermal styling 10 mins combout & style suitability All examined phases are based on the procedures and content taught from the appropriate Milady s or Pivot Point texts. At the beginning and end of each phase the student will be responsible for recording start & stop time(s) on a time sheet provided Time taken for each phase includes time for sectioning When the time of the phase(s) has expired, the student will be stopped and the completed work will be evaluated.
1. COLOR APPLICATION - Time Limit: 20 minutes Demonstrate a color re-touch only using a gel in place of a color. Drug store gel is acceptable for this phase only. Preparation Color apron/smock Gloves Appropriate draping of client Sectioning Width of subsections (.312 cm or ¼ inch) Amount of product used Complete coverage of regrowth Method of application bottle or brush Control of the hair during application Gel applied to regrowth only (1.25cm or 1/2inch) 2. SHAMPOO - Time Limit: 08 minutes Students are required to perform two shampoos demonstrating appropriate scalp manipulations. A towel is not to be applied to the hair until two examiners check the shampoo Do not apply conditioner at the sink (spray in conditioner may be used once model has been checked and returns to the station) Model appropriately seated Model appropriately draped. Adjustment of water temperature and pressure Correct holding of the nozzle Apply shampoo Show correct placement of fingers on the scalp, Demonstrate correct scalp manipulations Complete coverage of entire head Lifting the head for nape area Complete rinsing 3. PERMANENT WAVING - Time Limit: 45 minutes Single, double halo or straight back pattern acceptable Stabilizers are not permitted The portion required to wrap is: forehead to nape and one full side
Clean correct size sections & subsections Appropriate rod size for length & texture of hair Appropriate amount of hair on each rod for rod size Correct use of end papers Rods balanced and even Position of elastics 4. HAIRSETTING PATTERN - Time Limit: 45 minutes Combine a combination of pincurls and rollers to create a set The entire head must be completed The result should be a wearable style if it were to be dried and combed out Rollers a minimum of 6 rollers must be incorporated in the set Pincurls- a minimum of 12 pincurls must be incorporated in the set (3 clockwise, 3 counter clockwise, 3 standup, 3 triangular base) Amount of setting lotion used Amount of hair on roller Roller placement and bases Rollers & pincurls correctly secured Pincurls correctly formed Completed set Overall appearance of set 5. HAIRCUT -Time Limit: 45 minutes Demonstrate a uniform layered haircut that checks in all directions Minimum of 1 inch must be cut from all areas of the head Correct handling of comb & scissors Haircut checks in all directions Well shaped & balanced Control of the hair Even perimeter 1 inch cut all over 6. BLOW-DRY AND THERMAL STYLING - Time Limit: 20 minutes Hair dryers, brushes, curling irons and combs used to create the foundation for a finished style Professional hair dryers & marcel irons required Professional styling products required A minimum of 9 firm curls incorporated in the thermal set
Styling aids used Handling of dryer with appropriate nozzle attachment Appropriate size brushes and technique Thoroughly dried hair and shape Correct use of thermal iron and comb Appropriate size iron for length and texture of the hair Correct size sections and base for Iron Smooth, firm, even curls (minimum of 9) 7. COMB-OUT AND STYLE SUITABILITY - Time Limit: 10 minutes Comb out and style the previous blowdry and curling iron set into a modern look Technical comb out skills Shape & balance Wear ability Written Exam Milady s Standard Text or Pivot Point Text (Cosmetology-Hair) Exam The Cosmetology Provincial Written Exam consists of Written phase 2 papers: 1)Theory & 2)Infection Control/Bacteriology Written Exam may include but not limited to all or some of the following True and false Multiple choice Fill in the blank with word bank Requirements Exam applicants must have a comprehensive understanding of Hairdressing covered in their course outline and training from the respective registered School of Cosmetology in which they acquired their course of study There is a two-hour time limit to complete all written papers Students requiring an oral exam must request this on their student application form. Any amendments to this request must be received by the Cosmetology Association, in writing, no less than 60 days prior to the scheduled exam. Oral exam requests must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation (learning disabilities, English as a second language etc.) Exam Results
