DUS 1687-6: 2017 Foreword Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a parastatal under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives established under Cap 327, of the Laws of Uganda, as amended. UNBS is mandated to coordinate the elaboration of standards and is (a) a member of International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and (b) a contact point for the WHO/FAO Codex Alimentarius Commission on Food Standards, and (c) the National Enquiry Point on TBT Agreement of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The work of preparing Uganda Standards is carried out through Technical Committees. A Technical Committee is established to deliberate on standards in a given field or area and consists of key stakeholders including government, academia, consumer groups, private sector and other interested parties. Draft Uganda Standards adopted by the Technical Committee are widely circulated to stakeholders and the general public for comments. The committee reviews the comments before recommending the draft standards for approval and declaration as Uganda Standards by the National Standards Council. DUS 1687-6: 2017 School Clothing Part 6: Girls slacks and skirts 1 Scope This part of DUS 1687 specifies the materials, cut, make and trim of girls' slacks and skirts. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. DUS 1687-1, School clothing Part 1: General requirements for school clothing US ISO 4915, Textiles Stitch types Classification and terminology 3 Definitions For the purposes of this part of DUS 1687 the definition given in DUS 1687-1 and the following definition applies: Size designation The age (for sizes to fit intended wearers up to twelve years), or the Imperial size (for sizes to fit intended wearers older than twelve years) as well as the numerical value, in centimetres, of the waist and hip girth of the intended wearer ISO and IEC maintain terminological databases for use in standardization at the following addresses: ISO Online browsing platform: available at http://www.iso.org/obp 4 Materials 4.1 Outer Materials The outer material, as required, shall be of a fabric that complies with the relevant requirements given in table 1 of DUS 1687-1. Note: Clause 4.1 of DUS 1687-1 shall also apply.) The colour(s) of the dyed fabric shall be an acceptable match to the required colour(s), as agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier. 4.2 Supplementary materials and components The supplementary materials and components shall comply with the relevant requirements given in 4.2 of DUS 1687-1 v

5 Style, size and make 5.1 Style The style shall be as required. Skirts and slacks shall have a plain or an elasticized waist band. 5.2 Size The slacks and skirts should be supplied in one (or more) of the size designations given in columns 1 to 3 of table1, as required, and their measurements, determined in accordance with clause 6.2 of DUS 1687-1, should conform to the appropriate values given in columns 4 to 7. The skirt length shall be as agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer. The difference between the outside leg length and the body rise of the slacks (which does not include the width of the waistband) is an indication of the inside leg length of girls' slacks. 5.3 Make 5.3.1 General The relevant requirements for garments given in clause 4.3 of DUS 1687-1 shall apply. 5.3.2 Waistband The type of waistband, i.e. plain or elasticized, shall be as required. A plain waistband shall be lined with outer material and interlined with an appropriate interlining (see sub clause 4.2.1 of DUS 1687-1). 5.3.3 Openings and waistband closures The lower end of each opening, whether fitted with a slide fastener or not, shall be secured with a bar-tack The waistband shall be closed by means of a hook and bar (see sub clause 4.2.6 of DUS 1687-1) or by means of a button and buttonhole (see sub clause 4.2.5 of DUS 1687-1). 5.3.4 Pockets Each end of the mouth of each pocket shall be bar-tacked. 5.3.5 Bottoms of slacks The width of the finished hem of bottoms shall be at least 50mm.The edges shall be over locked, turned up and blind stitched. 5.3.6 Hems of skirts In the case of a skirt that has permanent (heat-set) pleats, the finished width of the hem shall be at least 20 mm. In all other cases, the finished width of hems shall be at least 25mm.The edges shall be over locked, or turned in and blind stitched. UNBS 2017 All rights reserved vii

5.3.7 Buttonholes All buttonholes shall be of one of the following types, as appropriate to the outer material: a) the shirt type(with a bar at each end); or b) the type having an eye and that is barred or fish-tailed and may be gimped. c) The length of a buttonhole shall be such as to acceptably accommodate the relevant button. 5.3.8 Seams Unless otherwise required, seams shall be at least 9mm wide and shall be as follows: a) Side seams of skirts, and outside leg seams and seat seams of slacks shall be at least 20 mm wide, over locked, and pressed open. Alternatively, a 9 mm safety stitch seam may be used; b) seat seams of slacks shall be sewn with stitch type 401 (see US ISO 4915); c) all exposed edges shall be over locked, or bound, or turned in and stitched 6 Packing, care-labelling and marking The requirements of clause 5 of DUS 1687-1 shall apply. 7 Inspection Inspection shall be done in accordance with clause 6 of DUS 1687-1. viii UNBS 2017 All rights reserved

Annex A (normative) Notes to purchasers A.1 The following requirements shall be specified in tender invitations and in each order or contract: a) the type and colour(s) of the outer material (see clause 4.1); b) the style (see clause 5.1); c) the size designation(s) required (see clause 5.2); d) the type of waistband (see sub clause 5.3.2); and e) the type of seams required (see sub clause 5.3.8). A.2 The following requirement shall be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser: the length of skirts (see clause 5.2). UNBS 2017 All rights reserved ix

Certification marking Products that conform to Uganda standards may be marked with Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Certification Mark shown in the figure below. The use of the UNBS Certification Mark is governed by the Standards Act, and the Regulations made thereunder. This mark can be used only by those licensed under the certification mark scheme operated by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards and in conjunction with the relevant Uganda Standard. The presence of this mark on a product or in relation to a product is an assurance that the goods comply with the requirements of that standard under a system of supervision, control and testing in accordance with the certification mark scheme of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards. UNBS marked products are continually checked by UNBS for conformity to that standard.
