Their wings have tiny feather-like filaments and these are covered in dust to help balance. The bee is important for pollinating plants so that they produce fruit and vegetable for us to eat. A caterpillar turns into a moth or butterfly in a cocoon. It hatches when it is fully developed. A spider spins a silk web. Spider silk is one of the strongest natural materials.. A scorpion is poisonous. It s sting is in it s tail. A spider is an arachnid. It has eight legs, not six. It has a very hairy body. Insect jaws are called mandibles. Antennae. A bee can only sting once and then it dies.

Karl Blossfeldt: Karl Blossfeldt was born in Germany in 1865 and died in 1932. He was most well-known as a photographer but he was also a sculptor and teacher. At first photography was seen as science and people used it to record the world. Photography was not considered to be art. Blossfeldt s work is seen as the transition of photography from science to art. Blossfeldt s work focused on nature. He photographed sections of plants eg. seed-heads, leaves, bud and plant stems. Blossfeldt invented a camera that allowed him to take close-up photographs of very small plant sections. These were enlarged up to 30 times as big. This allowed him to focus on the small details. The pictures are monochrome; this means that they have no colour. The plant forms are dark. They are contrasted against plain white backgrounds. This focuses on the shapes and detail. 19 Task: answer the questions with full sentences. 1. Who was Karl Blossfelt? 2. What was photography first used for? 3. Georgia O Keeffe: 20 Georgia O Keeffe was an American artist who was born in 1887 and died in 1986. She first became famous for her art in 1916 with her abstract (unrealistic) charcoal drawings. In the 1920s O Keeffe began to do representational work. This means that her pictures looked more realistic. Her large-scale paintings were based on natural forms such as flowers, shells, rocks and leaves. She is most well known for painting flowers. In 1924 she painted her first large-scale flower painting Petunia, No 2. Her paintings were close-up views, like looking through a magnifying glass and this allowed O Keeffe to focus on small details. Some people said that O Keeffe s paintings symbolized human reproductive organs because flowers are plant reproductive organs, but O Keeffe denied this. Her paintings have a simple composition (layout) and she used a smooth painting technique (the brushstrokes are blended together). O Keeffe used tone (light and dark shading) to create depth and form. This makes her paintings look more realistic. Georgia O Keeffe began to experiment with colour. Some of her paintings are pale with subtle shading, some are bright with strong contrasting shading. By 1929 O Keeffe moved to New Mexico and began to paint the desert landscape, rocks and cow skulls. Task: answer the questions with full sentences. Useful website: www.wikipedia.com 1. Alexander McQueen: moths 22 Alexander McQueen was a British fashion designer who was born in 1969 and died in 2010. McQueen has been inspired by many different things. I think there is beauty in everything. What normal people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it. Alexander McQueen In 2010 he designed a collection called Plato s Atlantis. The ancient Greek Philosopher Plato wrote the story of Atlantis in 355 BC. The legend told of how the ancient gods punished the corrupt and greedy people of Atlantic. A violent earthquake destroyed the land and giant waves flooded the island, causing it to sink into the sea. Alexander McQueen was inspired by this story to design a fashion collection showing how humans would have to live underwater if there was an environmental disaster caused by global warming. Alexander McQueen s designs feature detailed patterns and colours that resemble moth wings. The dress shapes are draped and folded to resemble moth wings and moth cocoons. Moths are very destructive they destroy one million acres of trees every year and have swarmed across cities. They are tough creatures and are more resistant to pesticides than mosquitoes and flies.
