At first photography was seen as science and people used it to record the world. Photography was not considered to be art. Blossfeldt s work is seen as the transition of photography from science to art. Blossfeldt s work focused on nature. He photographed sections of plants eg. seed-heads, leaves, bud and plant stems. Blossfeldt invented a camera that allowed him to take close-up photographs of very small plant sections. These were enlarged up to 30 times as big. This allowed him to focus on the small details. The pictures are monochrome; this means that they have no colour. The plant forms are dark. They are contrasted against plain white backgrounds. Georgia O Keeffe: 20 Georgia O Keeffe was an American artist who was born in 1887 and died in 1986. She first became famous for her art in 1916 with her abstract (unrealistic) charcoal drawings. In the 1920s O Keeffe began to do representational work. This means that her pictures looked more realistic. Her large-scale paintings were based on natural forms such as flowers, shells, rocks and leaves. She is most well known for painting flowers.
