MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In thinking about this time of year, with an unending number of reasons to give thanks and show appreciation, I found myself focusing on those in the art world that have inspired so many of us. If you ve visited the Tucson Museum of Art s current exhibition, from the Kasser Mochary Art Foundation, you most likely understand. Including approximately 120 works of art, this (partial) collection examines the human figure as found in paintings, sculpture and works on paper created by 19th and 20th Century European and American artists. You can t help but be in awe of the talents that have set the diverse number of gold standards in the art world, many not being recognized until decades after their time on earth. You may want to pay a visit to Cassatt, Dali, Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Picasso and the many others found in this exhibit if you find yourself with free time between now and February 22nd. Lest I be guilty of not acknowledging the more recent influences in our artistic lives, we have been blessed with wonderful workshops given by renowned artists of national significance such as Bev Jozwiak. It was thrilling to hear the excitement in the voices of a few of the attendees with whom I have spoken when they described the inspiration she provided. Our calendar this year presents three more workshops to consider, and our website can assist you with details. Acknowledging even more immediate sources of inspiration, I must give accolades to our SAWG members who provide countless opportunities to learn from their instruction. My personal experience has been that when working with challenging assignments and benefiting from the guidance of their critiques, I have been stretched beyond my old comfort zone into new and exciting opportunities to learn. We can t thank these artists enough for providing their inspiration. Last, but by no means least, the inspiration YOU provide by hanging your work in our gallery cannot be understated. Having worked at intake for many of our shows, I sometimes wonder how my paintings were ever accepted to hang alongside the others. Your approaches, your skills, your ideas all help to shape the next painting I do. So, in this season of appreciation, please know that you inspire most likely without even realizing it! How good is that! And speaking of spreading inspiration, don t forget that we now have gift certificates available to allow that special someone you know to personally select artwork in the gallery that inspires them. If sending holiday cards is part of your December traditions, the gallery is a terrific place to find them and support the arts at the same time! Consider spreading our wonderful calendars across the land by making them gifts to family and friends. The holiday show, 200 Under $100, is fast approaching providing a wealth of very affordable art, with a wonderful gala on December 11th to give you a special opportunity to view the show. The possibilities of supporting fellow artists and the Guild at this time of year are endless! Thanks to you, this holiday season, for being part of our inspirational organization. Your interest and support are appreciated more than you can imagine! Jenny Clark Remember - To submit any articles for the Sketchbook to Debra Irons at d_irons@cox.net. Deadline is always the 15th of each month. SHOW NEWS 10th Annual Calendar Show November 11 - December 7 UPDATE! Gallery patrons are enjoying the show and thoughtfully considering the wonderful paintings that were hung on November 10 as they vote for their 12 favorites. More than 100 ballots were cast the first week! If you haven t yet seen the show and voted, we hope you will soon! If you will be in town for Thanksgiving and having out of town guests, why not take them to the Gallery to see the show, vote, and purchase a calendar! First ever Saguaro Fellow exhibit featured during the Calendar Show. An invitation was issued to SAWG s four Saguaro Fellows to show one of their prize-winning paintings concurrently with the Calendar Show. The corner behind the desk was reserved for the exhibit and three of the four Fellows were able to participate. Reflections by Susan Morris, Twigs II by Sherry Matlack, and Sabino by Deanna Thibault are for sale and will be on display through December 7th. HOLIDAY SHOW December 9 - January 4 The Holiday Show: 200 Under $100 is just about ready to debut this year and ring in 2015! Mary Bubla and Karen Brungardt have worked hard to make this a festive and appealing show, so come to the Gala on Thursday, December 11 (6-8 pm), and check out this wonderful show!
