TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS BY THE ISLAMIC ARTS MUSEUM MALAYSIA (IAMM)

INTRODUCTION Since opening its doors in December 1998, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) has committed itself to collecting, preserving and propagating knowledge on Islamic art and cultural heritage. As such, the IAMM has always welcomed the opportunity to cooperate with other institutions that are equally passionate about heightening appreciation for Islamic art and culture in all its diversity. Among the IAMM s efforts to bring its collection to a wider audience, is through traveling exhibitions. Institutions that are interested to collaborate with the IAMM are welcomed to get in touch with the IAMM s Curatorial team, which is always on hand to advise on the selection and general availability of artefacts and exhibitions for loan. Many artefacts from the IAMM collection can be viewed at the IAMM website: www.iamm.org.my and through IAMM publications (also available for purchase through the website). The IAMM also welcomes visits from representatives of other institutions, who would like to view the IAMM collection and discuss the possible loan of artefacts and exhibitions.

PROPOSED TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS The IAMM is currently offering the following exhibitions for travel. They will require an exhibition space of approximately 400m2 and are available to tour internationally from 2014 onwards:

Rhythm and Verses This exhibition explores the brilliance of Persian single folios. These works from the 16th to the 19th century are among the finest achievements of Islamic civilisation, and yet have received little attention from scholars or publishers. It examines more than just the beauty of these calligraphic masterpieces in the collection of the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia. The rhythmic quality of the folios is also brought to life and new light is shed on a field that is both fascinating and mysterious. This exhibition has travelled to the Museum of the National University of Singapore and the Bibliotheca Library of Alexandria, Egypt.

Formation of Malaysia: Tradition & Continuity This exhibition is a unique combination of two past IAMM exhibitions related to Malaysian history and culture. Serving as a backdrop to the exhibition will be a selection of rarely-seen photos from the collection of the National Archives of Malaysia, taken during the formative years of the nation (1950s-1970s). In contrast to the black and white photos will be a collection of hand-woven and decorated Malay textiles. Colourful and bearing intricate motifs, these traditional textiles take centre stage and bear testament to the skill and virtuosity of Malaysian artisans.

The Shahnameh This exhibition provides a special focus on The Shahnameh, the renowned masterpiece of Persian literature. On display will be 25 illustrations taken from a 19th century copy of The Shahnameh from the collection of the IAMM. Each illustration, graphically enlarged to display it in detail, will be accompanied by a description of the story behind the image. To add dimension to the exhibition, 25 selected Iranian artefacts from the IAMM collection will be displayed alongside the illustrations. These artefacts are of a variety of materials, including textiles, manuscripts, ceramics, metalwork, arms and armour and woodwork.

Coins of the Islamic world This exhibition serves as an introduction to the history and diversity of Islamic coinage, across time and geography. A selection of around 200 coins will be put on display, including 7th century Umayyad gold dinars; 17th century gold kijang coins minted by Cik Siti Wan Kembang, Malaysia s historical warrior queen; and 18th century Mughal gold mohurs. Accompanying the coins are details on the coins themselves and the dynasties that minted them. A map will show the different regions of the Islamic world and important trade routes that have helped shape Islamic commerce and coinage.

Abrbandi: Ikats of Central Asia Central Asian ikats of the 19th century, with their vivid colours and bold patterns, provide a vibrant testimony to the rich and diverse heritage of the region. This exhibition opens with an overview of Central Asian history, encompassing: the major ikat centres, the Silk Road, sericulture and the diversity of textile arts in the region. It also discusses ikat weaving, with an emphasis on the weavers, the weaving workshops, the dyeing and weaving processes, the development of mechanised weaving, as well as the decline and revival of the art form. This exhibition travelled to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2009.
