Laundromat, creating ethical apparel since 1994. Winter is coming Our knitwear is built for the cold. We Canadians love the sound of our footsteps in the snow, we are proud of the icicles in our beards, and we know flurries can also fall in April, June or August. No matter how long this winter stretches, you can depend on us because our fleece lined knitwear is built to last and covered by our Limited Lifetime Warranty. Canadian Tapestry Just like our multicultural country, our designs are influenced by the diversity of Canada s inhabitants. Fair Tra de As members of the Fair Trade Federation, we have a holistic 360 Fair Trade approach and have gone through a rigorous screening process that takes into account all aspects of our business. For more than two decades, we have built meaningful relationships with our knitters. Our trade is based on trust, equality and sustainable growth. 0 The Great Outdoors Our breathtaking landscapes invite us to explore mountains, lakes and forests. We feel privileged to be able to enjoy such a spectacular backyard. To care for our planet and protect the environment we are helping our suppliers free themselves from fossil fuel by supplying them with solar panels. This year we are proud to introduce our Plant a Seed initiative to help us erase our carbon footprint while greening up Nepal by planting trees. Francis Dubé, Proud owner and CEO of a sustainable, environmentally conscious company, providing pure wool sweaters and accessories in all fairn ess, since 1994. The Himalayas
We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. - Native American saying Last spring a tree was planted in Nepal for each of our loyal customers. Through the Plant a Seed initiative, Laundromat will continue planting trees every year. Each tree planted helps to reduce our carbon footprint, brings communities closer together, and creates a healthier, greener future for generations to come. Bīja As an artist, I have always been inspired by nature; it is my muse, specifically trees and the ocean. Jessica Pisano s work is widely collected in both private and public collections all over the world. She paints surrounded by the natural beauty of her hometown of Martha s Vineyard. The piece is called Bīja, Sanskrit for: Truth, as the seed or cause of being. The seed of trees, plants. Bīja is also the common name of the Pterocarpus Marsupium, a deciduous tree, native to India and Nepal that can grow up to 30 metres tall. Clean up Nepal is a non-government organisation that aims to unite its partners to work towards a cleaner and greener Nepal. Clean up Nepal works to provide an enabling environment to improve solid waste management and promote greenery in Nepal by working closely with local communities. They connect, educate and empower people on sustainable waste management and sanitation through a people-centred, strength-based approach to improve community health, well-being and opportunity.
Plant A Seed Initiative This year we are particularly grateful. A series of fortunate events has given rise to a new program we are very proud of: our Plant a Seed initiative. Taking Root In a small café in Kathmandu, I met with our suppliers and the founding members of Clean up Nepal, an NGO dedicated to a cleaner and greener Nepal. Over breakfast, we were presented with the opportunity to fund a tree plantation on the riverbanks of the Bishnumati River in celebration of Earth Day 2016. The project was simple and inspiring: a section of the riverbank would be cleared of garbage and debris, holes would be dug and trees planted. Each tree, funded by an individual donor, would be planted in their name. The planting teams would be comprised of NGO staff and community participants from youth and women s groups. In this way the project s success would be ensured though local participation, education and direct involvement. Branching Out I presented my friends and family with the opportunity to get involved from abroad by simply funding a tree. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Within 48 hours, each available tree had found a benefactor. What made this project so appealing? For my father, it was planting a tree for each member of our family; a living representation of our family tree. For some of our friends it was a reminder of a past trip or the promise of a future one. For others, perhaps it was simply to feel a connection to a life growing at the foothills of the Himalayas. Inspired by our initial success, I wanted the project to branch out even further. What better way than to plant a tree for each of our loyal customers? In the summer of 2016, I returned to Nepal to help plant a new site in Sunakoti, Lalitpur. Blossoming I recently discovered that one of our customers, Jessica Pisano, is an award-winning artist, renowned for her depiction of trees. Her work is inspiring. When she agreed to provide us with an image to promote our tree project, we were overjoyed. Bearing Fruit The title of Jessica s painting represents everything we want this Plant a Seed initiative to encompass. A seed is a future generation, a generation we need to care for today.
360 0 Fair Tra de What is 360 0 Fair Tra de? It is a holistic path to Fair Trade. It means we, as an organisation, go beyond the Fair Trade basics of fair wages and safe working conditions. It is a 360 0 approach that is about true partnership with artisans and creating positive change through all our work. In Kathmandu, this translates into: - Replacing diesel powered generators by Solar Panels to improve air quality. - Providing schooling for community kids in need, from kindergarten to graduation. - Ensuring equal opportunity and equal wages for women. - Training and improving the skill sets of our artisans ensures better quality craftsmanship. This results in increased sales and production, thus ensuring a viable and sustainable business model. A win win situation for everyone involved! How do you know if a product is 360 0 Fair Tra de? Laundromat proudly guarantees the quality and performance of all its products. In 1999, I trekked around the Annapurna with my Laundromat sweater. I loved that sweater dearly but a few years ago we parted ways. While some may argue its ability to have remained stylish, it was still in excellent condition to keep me warm and comfortable. - Francis Dubé, CEO Laundromat Limited Lifetime Warranty Items with defects in materials or workmanship will be replaced or repaired, at the discretion of Laundromat for the practical lifetime of the product. This limited lifetime warranty does not cover failure due to mishandling, normal wear and tear, or the normal breakdown of material over time.
